Our partner spotlight this week is of our first Scottish partner, the Eric Liddell Peace Garden at Morningside United Church in Edinburgh. On 10 August, 2024, Alice Farnhill presented a Cross of Nails to the congregants encouraging them to continue their reconciliation work.

Morningside United Church is a blended church composed of members of the Church of Scotland and the United Reform Church. They share their building with an Orthodox Congregation. The most famous member was sportsman and missionary Eric Liddell.

Outside the building, the congregation has created a peace garden dedicated to telling the story of Liddell. The bird bath in the centre of the garden was given by the descendants of Liddell himself. In one corner, there is a bed devoted to Liddell’s favourite hymn “Be Still My Soul”. On the opposite side is a bed planted in the idea of peace and reconciliation. The lily of the Nile was planted by Delene Mack, who is chair of the South African CCN and is CEO for Hope for Africa. Birdhouses hanging on the fences are from Holy Island, the home of another CCN partner Marygate House..

Previously, the welcome bed had been planted the Polish intern for the CCN. This May, Rev Mary Taylor and North American CCN intern, Katrina Anderson planted begonias in that bed.

On 30 May, the diocesan Mothers’ Union celebrated their organisation’s 150th anniversary at Brecon Cathedral with a Songs of Praise service.

The Province of Wales MU marked the anniversary with a focus on peace and reconciliation through its partnership with the Community of the Cross of Nails. The diocesan president Gill Knight was presented with a Cross of Nails by Kate Massey, Canon for Arts and Reconciliation and acting dean at Coventry Cathedral.

Iglesia Episcopal Santa Maria or St Mary’s Church in Santiago de Cuba has been a CCN partner since the 1990s. They are supporters of their community. In the early 2000s, they ran day cares and provided food and water for families. For women, they had developed handcraft workshops to improve income. Every Friday, they pray the litany. Since 2024, the church has run a community lunch initiative in the parish.

In 2002, the UN declared today as the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. They recognized the need to “enhance the potential of culture as a means of achieving prosperity, sustainable development and global peaceful coexistence.” Celebrate different cultures by learning about one other than your own.
