Marta Keen wrote 'Homeward Bound' for "a loved one who was embarking upon a new phase of life's journey, to express the soul's yearning to grow and change'.

September presents changes for many people - starting school, moving school, moving on to University and work in the 18+ world, starting new jobs. Sung by our Girls' & Men's Choir, we offer this beautiful arrangement by Jay Althouse for everyone experiencing changes to their lives at the moment - whether chosen or put upon them. Specifically related to the Choir, we dedicate it to Alex and Josh. They have been members of the choir since joining as 7 year old boys and this month marks their departure for studies and work beyond school. It is a special thing to maintain dedicated membership of a church choir right through to the necessity of leaving for university.

As September moves in and Autumn is well and truly beckoning, we hope you might enjoy a short time of calm. Thank you to Marta Keen for writing it, Jay Althouse for arranging it, and the choristers for recording it - some of whom have, very luckily for us, been able to stay with the choir as they have entered the world of work and further study.

On Sunday 12th July we dedicated our Choral Evensong service to the memory of Ricky Lonmon (1952 - 2022) - whose anniversary falls today.
A much loved and missed Cookham resident and Holy Trinity Church chorister, we hope he is enjoying all the Tallis and Telstar he could wish for up on high.

MUSIC LIST - Choral Evensong, 12th July:
Hymns: Thine be the glory & Abide with me
Responses: Cleobury
Psalm: 121 (Walford Davies)
Canticles: Noble (in B minor)
Anthems: Deep within me (Higgins) & Homeward Bound (Keen)
Voluntary: Forgotten Dreams (Anderson) - one of Ricky's favourites

THE SILVER SWAN
The ancient tradition of Swan Upping takes place this coming week (13th-17th July). Here we present ‘The Silver Swan’, composed by Orlando Gibbons (1583 – 1625) and originally printed in 1610 in his 'First Set of Madrigals and Motets in Five Parts'.
It's not something the choir would sing as part of a Sunday service, but as a beautifully crafted madrigal it was a true pleasure to record it specially for this coming week.

It calls to mind a quote which has been embedded in the minds of choirmen over the ages:

“Swans sing before they die— 't were no bad thing
Should certain persons die before they sing.”

Samuel Taylor Colerige (1772-1834)

LEGS IN THE LADY CHAPEL
Holy Trinity Church Choir online - 'As water to the thirsty'

Many years ago the then vicar of Cookham, Reverend Michael Westropp, met a lady walking through the churchyard one Sunday evening before Evensong. Upon asking her if she was coming to the service, she replied ‘Heavens no, I’m not dressed appropriately’. His reply? ‘It doesn’t matter. Come as you are’. And ‘Come as you are’ became his saying – even putting it up as a sign in the churchyard. With this in mind, we hope you will accept a lineup of choristers who came as they were. Whilst the church provides some cool during a heatwave, singing and recording is hot work. Hence, this presentation of ‘As water to the thirsty’ (rather apt as we probably head towards a hosepipe ban) comes with a free side order of bare legs in the Lady Chapel. Please enjoy the singing . . .and the legs.

What better way to finish a choir practice than to record the choirmen's current favourite anthem?

Here it is:
Si iniquitates observaveris
Music: Samuel Sebastian Wesley
Words: Psalm 130 v.3
(If you, Lord, were to mark iniquities, who, O Lord, should stand?)

The sun may be shining, lawn mowers humming and birds busy about their summer business, but there will nonetheless be so many people experiencing difficult and sad times in their lives set against everyone saying ‘What lovely weather we’re having’.

We dedicate this short meditation to anyone who needs a little musical and spiritual support. In particular, we offer this on behalf of all the choristers for our friend Angela, in her time of mourning for her beloved husband, Robert (Bob). Angela is a committed and lovely chorister in Alter Chorum. And when she is not singing with us, she is a stalwart member of the congregation.

Music and prayer for those in need of some spiritual comfort.Recor...
