WHY DID JESUS CHOOSE BREAD AND W**E AS HIS BODY AND BLOOD?

The night before He died, Jesus held two ordinary things in His hands.

Bread.

And w**e.

Not gold.

Not precious jewels.

Not something rare or extraordinary.

Bread and w**e.

And then He said words that would change history forever:

“This is My Body.”

“This is My Blood.”

But why?

Why did the Son of God choose bread and w**e?

Why not something else?

The answer reaches from Eden to Calvary… and from Calvary to every altar in the world.

✝️ BECAUSE GOD OFTEN HIDES GREAT THINGS IN SIMPLE THINGS

God has always loved to work through the ordinary.

Moses held an ordinary staff.

David carried an ordinary sling.

The Jordan was an ordinary river.

Yet God filled them with extraordinary power.

And now, in the New Covenant, God takes the most common elements of human life and fills them with His very Presence.

Because God does not despise the ordinary.

He transforms it.

✝️ BREAD IS THE FOOD OF LIFE

For thousands of years, bread was the basic food of humanity.

The poor had it.

The rich had it.

The traveler carried it.

The family shared it.

Bread sustains life.

Without it, people hunger.

Without Christ, souls hunger.

Jesus had already said:

“I am the Bread of Life.” (John 6:35)

So when He chose bread, He was revealing something profound:

Just as the body cannot live without food,

the soul cannot live without Him.

✝️ W**E IS THE SIGN OF JOY AND COVENANT

In Scripture, w**e is more than a drink.

It is a sign of celebration.

A sign of blessing.

A sign of covenant.

At Cana, Jesus transformed water into w**e.

Not because w**e was insignificant.

But because it pointed to the joy of the Kingdom.

Now at the Last Supper, He takes w**e and says:

“This is My Blood of the Covenant.” (Matthew 26:28)

The w**e of celebration becomes the Blood of salvation.

✝️ THEY WERE ALREADY PART OF SACRIFICE

Long before the Last Supper, bread and w**e had appeared in a mysterious moment.

A priest-king named Melchizedek offered:

“Bread and w**e.” (Genesis 14:18)

Centuries before Christ was born, God had already planted a sign.

A shadow.

A prophecy.

The offering of Melchizedek pointed forward to the eternal priesthood of Christ.

✝️ BECAUSE JESUS WANTED TO REMAIN WITH US

Think about it.

If Jesus had chosen something rare, only a few could receive Him.

If He had chosen something reserved for kings, many would be excluded.

But bread and w**e can be found everywhere.

Every nation.

Every culture.

Every century.

The Eucharist was meant for the whole world.

The King of Heaven chose signs that every human being could understand.

✝️ BECAUSE HE WANTED TO FEED US, NOT JUST TEACH US

Jesus did not come only to give information.

He came to give Himself.

Teachers give lessons.

Jesus gives His life.

And food becomes part of the person who eats it.

That is why He did not simply say:

“Listen to Me.”

He said:

“Take and eat.”

The Eucharist is not merely instruction.

It is communion.

✝️ THE MYSTERY IS EVEN DEEPER

Bread is made by crushing grain.

W**e is made by crushing grapes.

Before they become nourishment, they undergo sacrifice.

The grain must be broken.

The grape must be poured out.

And so they become perfect signs of Christ:

His Body broken for us.

His Blood poured out for us.

The Cross is already hidden within the bread and w**e.

✝️ HEAVEN HIDES IN HUMILITY

The greatest irony of the Gospel is this:

The God whom the universe cannot contain

chooses to hide Himself under the appearance of bread and w**e.

No lightning.

No thunder.

No earthly glory.

Just humility.

Because love does not force itself upon people.

It waits to be received.

✝️ THE FINAL TRUTH

Why did Jesus choose bread and w**e as His Body and Blood?

Because bread feeds.

Because w**e celebrates.

Because sacrifice transforms.

Because humility reveals.

And because through these simple gifts, Christ found a way to remain with His people until the end of time.

So the next time you see the bread and w**e placed upon the altar…

Do not see ordinary food.

See a mystery prepared from the beginning of creation.

For in those humble gifts,

the Bread of Heaven and the Cup of Salvation are waiting for you. 🙏✝️

DO YOU KNOW WHY WE KNEEL DURING CONSECRATION AT MASS?

Now listen 👂

We Kneel at Consecration?

Because God comes down.

Because Heaven touches Earth, and time stops.

Because the same Jesus who walked the dusty roads of Galilee now rests on the altar, not symbolically, but truly present: Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

We kneel, not because we are forced to, but because our souls cannot stand before such holiness.

We kneel, because we recognize what the world refuses to see:

That the hands of the priest no longer belong to him.
That his voice is no longer his own.
That it is Christ Himself who speaks:
“This is My Body... This is My Blood.”

We kneel because Calvary is not past, it is present.

Because this is the moment the Lamb of God is offered anew, not killed again, but made present, just as He was on that hill, arms stretched wide, heart pierced.

We kneel because Mary is here, silently weeping at the foot of the Cross, as her Son gives Himself again for a world too distracted to notice.

We kneel because this is holy ground, more holy than Moses' burning bush, more sacred than Solomon’s Temple.

And because at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow—in heaven, on earth, and under the earth (Philippians 2:10).

We kneel because the saints and angels kneel too. Thrones, Dominions, Cherubim, Seraphim, millions of them, surround the altar in awe.

We kneel because this is not bread.
This is not w**e.
This is God.

And if your heart truly believes that, how could you not fall to your knees?

O mystery beyond words.
O love beyond measure.
O God who humbles Himself that we may be lifted up!

This is why we kneel.

And if the world sees it as foolishness, let it be so, for we know the truth:
Every time the Host is lifted high, Heaven opens, and God descends.

And we kneel…
because Love Himself is before us.

Choir

The choir will shortly be beginning practice for Advent and Christmas. It badly needs new members. It is an aging choir and if the parish wants to have a choir, new members are essential. If you would like to join please speak to Brenda, our choir leader and organist, after Mass on Sunday. No need to read music. No audition. Just enthusiasm and enjoyment of singing. Rehearsals last one hour after Mass on Sundays.
