Birch InSpire - Fantastic News!!

Following the submission of our extensive Business Plan last week to the Chelmsford Diocesan Board of Finance, the Diocese have voted to support the next stage of our plan to save key parts of Birch Church! Critically, Chelmsford Diocese have also agreed to contribute £300,000 (about 10%) of the project’s estimated cost, at just over £3,000,000. This is vital because the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) will require us to match fund a minimum of 10% of the total grant amount. The diocesan contribution is on condition that we are successful in securing NLHF funding.

The Diocese’s decision also took into account the positive positions of both Colchester City Planning and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, after a number of meetings with them in late 2025. The focus will now be on raising NLHF funding and on working to their timeframes. We shall be reporting quarterly to the Diocese on our progress.

Additionally, Chelmsford Diocese will be working with Church Commissioners to look at ecclesiastical law changes to the pastoral scheme associated with the church demolition. We would like to express our enormous gratitude to Chelmsford Diocese for their support over the last 2+ years and most particularly for their substantial offer. Without this offer on the table, we would have struggled to proceed with fund-raising work.

This is all a huge step forward in our mission to save the key parts of Birch Church from demolition! Being 45 minutes’ walk from the edge of Colchester, we look forward to creating a spectacular heritage destination for the residents of Birch, local villages and also of Colchester. The beautiful location will include a ‘café with a soul’ in the chancel area, together with a shop and some rentable space, stretching into the North Aisle. The iconic spire will continue to dominate the local landscape and the destination will ‘preserve the past, enrich the present and inspire the future’.

BIRCH INSPIRE - TWO PIECES OF EXCITING NEWS!

We Are A Charity!
We are excited to announce that Birch InSpire’s application to become a registered charity has been quickly accepted by The Charity Commission. This now means that, as a registered formal body, we shall be in a position to fundraise, which of course is critical.

Diocesan Vote
Chelmsford Diocese Board of Finance has recently voted to allow us another six months to work on trying to save part of Birch Church. This will take us up to mid-January 2026. The Diocese would specifically like us to focus on our business plan (for both the capital and operations stages of the project), together with initial in-principle discussions with both Colchester Planning and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This is exactly what we recognised needed to be done next, and so are delighted to be able to progress to this vital stage.

Update
We've just finished the last six months tranche of work on the objectives agreed by Birch InSpire and Chelmsford Diocese. We made a big presentation to them this week on our work including the local consultation, our architect's visit to the church, discussion on parking and access with the parochial church council, a parish council meeting, initial consultations with funding bodies, risk assessments, our vision and finally our application to the Charities Commission to become a charity.

The Chelmsford Diocesan Board of Finance (CDBF) will vote in July as to whether to grant our request of 6 more months to put together a fully costed business plan. If CDBF grant our request and the Charities Commission accepts our application to become a charity, we shall be working with other related professionals in the second half of this year to take this project forward.

We hope to update further after the CDBF vote in July.

Thank you for staying with us and we wish you a warm and sunny summer!

BIRCH CHURCH - The Vision - Preserving the Past, Enriching the Present, Inspiring the Future

We are delighted to announce that, following the results of the recent local community consultation survey (thank you to all for completing this), together with a visit to Birch Church, by our architect, we now have an exciting vision for the project at Birch Church going forward!

Our architect, Paul Bowman, from Designsplus Architects, together with structural engineer, Ed Morton, have recently visited the interior of the church in order to advise us on what could be saved. Sadly, most of the interior of the church currently comprises floor to ceiling scaffolding, owing to its very poor level of repair. They have advised us that this part of the church could not be retained cost effectively. However, we were very excited to learn that two of the most significant parts could saved – the Tower/Spire and the Chancel (narrower part of the church at the East end, at the opposite end to the Spire, see attached photo).

The Vision
Birch, the surrounding villages and Colchester residents have said that they would like any surviving part of the church to be used for a café, a shop and smaller meeting / health wellbeing space. We are therefore proposing for a café to be located in the Chancel. This would include glass frontage at the West End, offering a spectacular view of the spire in the haven of a cafe. This miniature church - ‘café with a soul’ - would incorporate the glorious East Window, depicting the nativity scene, keeping its sacred ambiance. These two unique buildings will then create anchors for an outdoor terrace link. The terrace would become an outdoor haven with summer seating and a garden area, adding natural beauty and seasonal charm. Finally, a smaller building, in keeping with local architecture, would be constructed to house any café overflow, the shop and some rentable smaller space. It is possible that we may be able to keep some of the current church facade frontage, as a stand-alone feature. But it could be prohibitively expensive. So, the saving of the front facades should be seen as a ‘nice to have if we can’.

We believe that all of the above will offer a beautiful landmark heritage destination. It will create some additional (important financial) footfall from outside of Birch, creating a sanctuary for walkers (Gosbecks car park in Colchester is only an hour’s walk from the church), cyclists, nature lovers and those just seeking peace. It also creates a beautiful well-being hub for both Birch and neighbouring villages, while engaging local businesses in a profitable local community project.

Going Forward
We have lots of work to do, including discussions with the local parochial church council on access and parking within the church site, the setting up of a charity for the initial restoration and development phase, together with a business plan to demonstrate the project’s financial viability. And of course, fund raising. We also soon hope to have a dedicated website with more current up to date information, following the progress of the project. This will be a long and demanding project. But will come with the enormous reward of preserving our past, enriching our present, and creating something really inspirational for the future!
