We are on Twitter/X as . Also at https://www.achurchnearyou.com/church/16195/ Welcome to St Cuthbert’s Haydon Bridge, a parish of the Diocese of Newcastle, situated in the Deanery of Hexham. We are one of the “Parishes by the Wall” in the South Tyne valley of Northumberland. Here, on the northern frontier of what is now England, Hadrian’s Wall marches through our parishes. It was c
onstructed by the Romans 1900 years ago and brings visitors from across the world to enjoy and learn about the ancient sites to be found along its length. Haydon Bridge has three active churches: Roman Catholic, Methodist and Church of England. St Cuthbert’s parish has two buildings, an ancient remote church up the hill where St Cuthbert’s body probably rested on its long journey round the North in Saxon times; and a newer 18th century church in the centre of the present-day village that straddles the river around our historic bridge. People attending all three churches are actively involved in village life. In addition to services, St Cuthbert’s offers programmes of Christian learning during Lent and Easter, opportunities for prayer and pilgrimage, and an annual quiet day at a nearby retreat house. Services take place each Sunday, normally at 1030. All are welcome. On most Sundays the eucharist is celebrated with hymns. On occasion, there is a lay-led non-eucharistic Service of the Word. During the pandemic, our safety arrangements are constantly under review. For now, we ask you to wear a face-covering in accordance with government guidelines. Pews available for seating are labelled with St Cuthbert’s Cross to ensure social distancing. The parish is in vacancy at present following the departure of the former Vicar Benjamin Carter who left in 2021 to take up a new post. In the absence of an incumbent, services are being led by The Rev Gill Alexander, a self-supporting priest who is licensed to the Benefice, together with the parish churchwardens and visiting clergy. The parish church is open on Sundays at service times, and during the working week from Tuesdays to Saturdays 1000-1600. Closed on Mondays. The Old Church is open during daylight hours.
