Friends of St Martin's

Friends of St Martin's St Martin's Church has stood in the heart of Cheselbourne for over 700 years, supporting the community through life's milestones. We’d love your help.

Friends Of St Martin's want to help ensure it's here in another 700 years with your help. St Martin’s Church has been at the heart of Cheselbourne for over seven hundred years and is now in desperate need of your help. In March 2020, thieves stole £5,000 of lead from the church roof, causing £65,000 damage. The Cheselbourne PCC has some funds, and is applying for grants which will provide a signif

icant proportion of the funds needed, but we will need your help to save this historic building. It's not just through donations, but by demonstrating your support, it helps with the grant applications needed. To support this effort, we have resurrected the Friends Of St Martin’s to take this beyond the church congregation. There are many who don’t attend the church services, but have milestones through life that link to the church. Whether it’s a wedding, a baptism or a funeral, or just feeling a sense of history as you glimpse the building, St Martin’s has been a source of solace and joy to many. Friends Of St Martin’s want to help the PCC to preserve that for generations to come. Whether it’s joining the Friends Of St Martin’s team, running or supporting an event, volunteering to help on work on the church or making a donation. There is a lot of work to do, but with your help we can create a more sustainable landmark, both geographically and emotionally, that can pull everyone together. We'd like to pass on our thanks to The Very Revd Stephen Waine who has been appointed as Interim Dean of Exeter, starting at Exeter Cathedral on Wednesday 1 July 2026. We wish him all the best in his new role, and we're sure he'll be a great addition to the team at Exeter Cathedral.

The Very Revd Stephen Waine Appointed as Interim Dean of Exeter

Following the announcement of the retirement of The Very Revd Jonathan Greener as Dean of Exeter, The Very Revd Stephen Waine has been appointed Interim Dean of Exeter by the Bishop of Exeter.

Stephen brings a wealth of experience in cathedral and parish ministry. Stephen served as Dean of Chichester from 2015-2023, where he provided leadership to the Cathedral for eight years. He currently serves as Vicar of six rural parishes in Dorset.

Stephen will join Exeter Cathedral on Wednesday 1 July 2026, and will become Interim Dean from Saturday 1 August 2026.

Don’t forget that there is a carol service tonight at 6pm at Milton Abbey. This is a great opportunity to take part and hear your favourite carols, supported by a choir and followed up with mince pies and mulled wine. Admission is free, but there is normally a collection at the end that goes to a good cause. All welcome.
