Church photos used for "The North" revisited:

In 1965 The Sunday Times Magazine published a Special Issue devoted to "The North" of England, with colour photographs by photographer, John Bulmer. This was the first time a professional photographer working in colour, had documented these working class communities.

60 years later, the Arts Council of England funded photographer Simon Hill to revisit this idea and capture the north of England as it is today, and this included a visit to our church in Burnley.

The photos will be showcased at "The North Revisited" exhibition, from October 05 at Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, and will also be published as book of the same name.

Bishop Mick Fleming said:

"We are delighted that our church with feature in this important visual archive documenting the history and community of England’s north for years to come."

Back to school with brand new shoes:

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to set up a voucher scheme for parents to get new Clarks shoes for their children as they returned to school after the summer holidays.

Pastoral assistant Trudi, who manages the scheme, said:

"With the cost of living continuing to rise, school shoes are quickly becoming unaffordable. Being able to offer families not only new school shoes, but the opportunity to go to Clarks and have them fitted, is a real joy."

The scheme has now closed, and we are delighted to say we were able to provide vouchers for over 70 pairs of new shoes.

In addition, our annual CAS (Coat and Shoe) Appeal for children’s winter clothes, which we will be launched again in the coming months.

An update on our church in the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴

Pastor Juan, who Bishop Mick recently ordained as a Deacon, is doing a great job for us leading the work out there, and we’re seeing great results.

Our church in the Dominican Republic looks after vulnerable children and stops them from being s*x trafficked or abused in other ways.

We would just like to thank everyone who supports us, and let you know that Church on the Street is spreading far and wide.

From kitchen volunteer to apprentice chef:

Libby had been volunteering at our church in Burnley, preparing and serving food, for about a year. When she joined us she was unemployed and looking to gain much needed experience. Now she is moving on to start a chef's apprenticeship, and while we are very sorry to see her leave, we're delighted for the reason why.

Libby said:

"Church on the Street is genuinely a lovely place to volunteer, and it really brought me out of the shell that I was in. We have a lot of laughs together and it's like a family."

"When I started I was shy. I didn't talk to people, I didn't interact, I was always in the corner, but since working here I feel I can talk to anyone. It's changed me a lot."

While volunteering with us, Libby gained her Health & Hygiene Level 2, and says her experience volunteering really helped her getting an apprenticeship.

We would like to thank Libby for her amazing contribution to the church, and ask God's blessing as she flourishes in her new role.
