We would like to provide an update on the search to identify suitable sites for a new recycling centre in the north of the county.

Earlier this year Wiltshire Council invited local residents to suggest suitable sites for the development of a new HRC in the north of the county, especially close to the Royal Wootton Bassett area as this location is accessible from both Purton and Calne. This public engagement complemented work already carried out by Officers to identify suitable sites.

All potential locations have been considered as part of a broader high-level options appraisal. This appraisal has included an assessment of both Wiltshire Council-owned land and sites put forward during the public engagement. A total of 21 sites have been assessed comprising 12 Wiltshire Council-owned sites and 9 external sites. At this stage the assessment has focused on identifying whether sites may be suitable in principle, taking into account factors such as location, accessibility, operational requirements, ecological constraints and other strategic planning conditions.

Following this assessment of all sites, the only suitable site that can be taken forward to the detailed feasibly stage is located immediately south of the existing salt dept on Marlborough Road, Royal Wootton Bassett.

This site is suitable for next stage assessment as it is in council ownership, is big enough to accommodate the new facility, has good access and is well located to serve residents in place of the Lower Compton and Purton HRCs.

Further work is now required to determine whether this site can be brought forward for development. This includes a full feasibility study, ecological and environmental surveys, traffic assessments, securing the necessary environmental and waste permits and ultimately the submission of a planning application.

A new webpage which includes frequently asked questions can be viewed at https://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/hrc-north-wilts

As further milestones are reached and the project develops, we will look to provide more updates to keep you and local communities informed of progress. We are however, working hard to make sure the new HRC can be delivered as quickly and cost effectively as possible.

Kind regards

Adene

Household Recycling Centre Booking System Pilot

Wiltshire Council is introducing a pilot booking system at six Household Recycling Centres (HRCs), with bookings opening on 8 September and visits by appointment beginning on 14 September.

As a reminder the pilot will operate at Devizes, Lower Compton, Melksham, Purton, Salisbury and Stanton St Quintin. The pilot will initially allow residents to book a 30-minute slot up to one week in advance, with some same-day appointments available. The length of slots will be regularly reviewed to ensure we have maximum capacity available at sites.

The pilot aims to reduce queuing, improve the customer experience and minimise disruption for nearby communities and businesses. Existing opening hours, permit requirements, accepted waste types will remain unchanged.

You’ll see the system being promoted fully later in the summer.

Residents are encouraged to use the online booking system wherever possible. Those who are unable to access or use the online service can call Wiltshire Council's Rubbish and Recycling line for assistance with making a booking.
