Looking up or looking down? 👀

The tower steps are exceptionally steep. If you’re not keen on tight spaces or heights perhaps give a miss to negotiating these!

This view is looking up the steps. Said to have been constructed like this as added protection if the church/village was under attack during cross border raids as the tower was a built as a place of refuge. Imagine ascending these in a hurry?

The tower steps and upper levels are sadly not accessible to all and you can perhaps see why!

Did you know?

The old parish of Brigham covered quite a large area. From Honister and Buttermere to the middle of Bassenthwaite Lake and Isel Bridge, Nepgill, Greysouthen, Lorton, Cockermouth and out to Eaglesfield, Mosser and Bramley.

The parish included a number a churches that exist today as parishes in their own right. Some of these churches and parishes today are part of the Grasmoor Mission Community.

How about this for a postcard?

This “Giant” postcard depicting an 1899 view of St Bridget’s Church is almost A4 size and apparently still only cost a half-penny to send.

Notice how young the trees are

Thankfully this one wasn’t folded to fit through a tight letterbox!! 📮✉️
