As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, "Follow me." And he rose and followed him. And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. Matthew 9:9-10

Greetings in the name of Jesus!

As a tax-collector, Matthew would have tracked Jesus’ movements and assessed his tax potential. He would also have listened intently to figure out what his comings and goings were all about and that’s when the unexpected happened: The Word of God breezed unawares into Matthew’s stagnant life bringing a breath of fresh air, the very breath of life’s fullness. Matthew heard Jesus reiterate God’s Law. Thou shalt not steal weighed heave on him. But He also heard Him say how God’s nature is always to have mercy on repentant sinners.

But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know- this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. Acts 2:14a, 22-23

Greetings in the name of Jesus!

The cross of Jesus is a colossal arrow pointing all people of the world to the way of salvation and “there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12) This is what the apostles stood up for, filled with the Holy Spirit, amid the same people who condemned Jesus to death. They feared for their own lives as we would. But they were not testifying to a product of men’s machinations. They had learned about all the promises the Father had made in the Old Testament and who they pointed to from Christ himself.

Come hear more during our celebration of The Holy Trinity this Sunday at Ascension from 8am.

A Blessed Pentecost to one and all. May we all be reminded of how the Holy Spirit brings us together rather than divides, He comes to us where we are.

May your week be a blessed one.

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’”. John 7:37-38

Greetings in the name of Jesus!

Our celebrations of Easter and Pentecost show us just how grounded we are in the Old Testament and just how the things we read in it point to Jesus Christ as the fulfilment of the Law and the prophets in whom we have a new, final and eternal covenant. The Feast of Pentecost also reminds us that almost half of the church year has already passed, that the harvest is underway, that the feast of ingathering will soon be upon us, that the end of this time is fast approaching, that we will soon reach the end of the pilgrimage to our heavenly home. This mean time in between is a time of want and thirst. But it is also the time when, according to Isaiah 5:8-11, God satisfies the desires of our parched souls and makes our bones strong to stand and walk by watering us like a garden so that we ourselves can become like springs of water and not fail.

Come celebrate Pentecost at Ascension this Sunday from 8am. As this is the 4th Sunday of the month Pastor Joel will be with you, while I will be at the Ipswich Mission for the Divine Service from 3pm.
