Then his master summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. And should you not have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you? Matthew 18:32-33

Greetings in the name of Jesus!

Jesus’ parable of the unforgiving servant is not a subjective exercise on how much we think we owe or deserve. It is a statement showing how far in the red we are by the king who came to settle accounts with us. It is a comparison between the forgiving economy of God’s Kingdom and our tendency to withhold forgiveness. It also shows the high cost and our utter necessity of our bondservant Jesus to free us from our debt. Redemption from sin is inextricably linked to God’s one and only Son who, in His mercy, God did not spare but gave up so that whoever believes in Him may not perish but have eternal life.

Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:1-3

Greetings in the name of Jesus!

Greatness in the kingdom of heaven is not a question of who can put on airs of false modesty while the haughty image of the old Adam is still branded on their face. Jesus explained that unless one forgets all he knows and becomes like a child – literally, unless we are born again – we will never enter the kingdom of God. With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible; and this is evident in the fact that Jesus, the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, humbled himself by becoming a man, then by humbly receiving our sin as His own, and then by humbly suffering and dying for our salvation.

Then Jesus told his disciples, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Matthew 16:24

Greetings in the name of Jesus!

Taking up our cross does not mean the denial of life or of all that is good right and salutary in the world – it is still God’s world – but the denial of the self that is bend on its own destruction. Follow me – says Jesus – because He blazed the way from suffering and death to the fullness of life. He is the way the truth and the life and, once we get back in line, once Jesus resets our minds on the things of God, we can see how the self, being a “fat relentless ego” must be denied and pinned to the cross to die so that we may live in God’s wholeness or integrity.
