Today marks five years since the start of lockdown (23 March 2020), when Vic and I first decided to spend our time tidying the overgrown cemetery. From the very beginning, our aim has always been to protect the wildlife and heritage of this special place.
Vic chose not to be associated with the group when the trees were cut down which didn’t need removing and the foxhole filled in whilst we were away. Sadly, the friendly fox pictured has not been seen since. The wildlife area and bushes were removed at the same time without discussion, that is the reason why I made the decision that I did not wish to be a trustee (August/early September 2022).
More recently, the wildlife fences we built during COVID to protect birds and hedgehogs have been taken down, and the hedgehog house I built has had the log roof/vegetation removed and entrance blocked. I can only hope any creatures inside are safe.
As we reflect on these past years, my final thought is simple: Be kind.
