The Hedge Priest

The Hedge Priest Walk the edges, where faith and spirituality grow wild, unconstrained by the walls of the church. Priests have a role to stand between us and the Other.

Historically priests have often acted as gatekeepers but a true priest is a two way channel between the divine and the created. They can speak human words on our behalf to the divine when we find ourselves without words. They can speak divine words to us when we find we cannot hear God. And they should be words of truth, life, light, hope. During the medieval period a Hedge Priest was a priest on

the edge. Unpaid by the church institution, unofficial, unapproved. The English hedge priest John Ball argued for the essential equality of all people, a heretical position in 14th century England. He was a leader in the Peasant’s Revolt and was executed in 1831 for treason. I am a fan (of him, not of capital punishment). The modern Hedge Priest is a reimagining of this ancient role, part priest, part holy fool, offering faith and spirituality to people who perhaps also feel they do not fit into the mainstream of the church and faith. The Hedge Priest is able to say things and do things that the official church can not or will not. I offer Rites&Rituals for life, as well as being a Journeyman, spiritual companionship through life's journey. My website is currently under construction, so get in touch to find out more about Rites&Rituals or the role of Journeyman.
