Can a boat build itself… but the universe created itself?

A powerful argument attributed to Imam Abu Hanifah رحمه الله:

If it is unreasonable to believe that a tree could fall, cut itself into pieces, assemble itself into a boat and carry someone across a river — all without anyone designing or directing it — then how can we look at the precision, order and complexity of the entire universe and claim it has no Creator?

The heavens, the earth, the sun, the moon, the changing of night and day — all operating with incredible order.

Creation points towards a Creator.

﴿أَمْ خُلِقُوا۟ مِنْ غَيْرِ شَىْءٍ أَمْ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ﴾

“Or were they created by nothing, or were they themselves the creators?”
[Qur’an 52:35]

The universe didn’t create itself.

Allah created it.

Nothing + nothing + nothing will never = everything.

The universe cannot create itself before it exists. Creation cannot be its own creator.

So where did everything come from?

There must be a Creator who is not created — One without beginning, without end, and upon whom all creation depends.

That Creator is Allah.

“Were they created by nothing, or were they themselves the creators?”
Qur’an 52:35

“My brothers, when are you going to wake up?”

Nitrous oxide might be treated as a joke. A quick high. A few minutes of laughter and euphoria.

But what happens when that blurred vision, confusion and feeling of invincibility follows someone behind the wheel?

A car is not a toy. It is over a tonne of metal moving at speed — and in the hands of someone whose judgement and reactions are impaired, the consequences can be devastating.

It might feel like “a bit of fun” until an innocent person pays the price.

A mother walking home.
A child crossing the road.
A family going about their normal day.

One reckless decision can take a life and leave multiple families dealing with consequences that can never be undone.

Our young brothers need to understand: being reckless with your own life is one thing, but your actions can destroy the lives of people who had absolutely nothing to do with your choices.

Don’t wait for tragedy before you wake up.

If you know someone involved with nitrous oxide, reckless driving or getting behind the wheel while impaired, remind them before it is too late.

Your few minutes of “fun” are not worth somebody else’s life.

“Don’t call it ḍarūrah when it’s a lifestyle choice.”

Necessity in Islam is not simply something we strongly want, something that makes life easier, or something that has become normal in the society around us.

The principle of ḍarūrah (necessity) has limits.

The example given in this reminder is powerful: if a person is genuinely starving and the only food available is something normally prohibited, they take only what is necessary to survive. They don’t turn the exception into an opportunity to indulge.

So when we use “necessity” to justify something prohibited, we have to sincerely ask ourselves:

Is this genuinely the minimum required to escape hardship — or am I using necessity to justify the lifestyle I want?

If the argument is that owning a home has become an absolute necessity, then why does that necessity require the bigger house, the detached property, the extra bedrooms or spending hundreds of thousands more?

Ḍarūrah should never become a convenient label that allows us to stretch the boundaries of the deen to fit our desires.

We don’t reshape the commands of Allah to fit the lifestyle we want. We reshape our lives to remain within the boundaries Allah has set.

May Allah grant us halal provision, protect us from doubtful and prohibited wealth, and give us the strength to put obedience to Him before our desires. آمين.

Riba is not a small matter.

A person may build a property portfolio, make profit and be praised for what they own — but if it is built through what Allah has prohibited, what is there to be proud of?

We should fear the sin more than we admire the asset.

“Swallow that pride and cry over your sins.”

May Allah protect us from riba, forgive us for what has passed and grant us halal provision filled with barakah. Ameen.

Riba is not something to treat lightly.

Allah warns us in the Qur’an of a war from Allah and His Messenger for those who persist in riba. When the warning is this severe, we have to ask ourselves: is any house, car, investment or lifestyle really worth it?

We can spend years chasing bigger homes, better cars and more wealth, while forgetting that true success is not measured by what we own — it is measured by our obedience to Allah and the barakah He places in what we have.

The car is not worth the riba.
The house is not worth the riba.
No worldly asset is worth sacrificing your akhirah for.

And when we wonder why there is no barakah in our wealth, our homes or our lives, we should also look at how that wealth was earned and what we may have become comfortable with.

May Allah protect us from riba in all its forms, forgive us for what has passed, grant us sincere tawbah, and bless us with halal provision filled with barakah. Ameen.

A lie does not become permissible just because life feels expensive.

Whether it is benefits, income, tax or any other financial matter, a Muslim must remember that wealth gained through deception comes with accountability before Allah.

If maintaining a certain lifestyle requires lying and cheating, then the answer is not to justify the lie — it is to reconsider the lifestyle.

Ask yourself: will this excuse stand before Allah on the Day of Judgement?

As parents, we want the best education, opportunities and future for our children — but what greater goodness can we give them than teaching them the correct Aqeedah?

Teach your children who Allah is.
Teach them the rights Allah has over His servants.
Teach them why they were created.
Teach them about death, the grave and resurrection.
Teach them that this dunya is temporary and that every one of us is travelling towards the Hereafter.

Billions have walked this path before us, and every one of us will follow.

There will ultimately be only two destinations: Paradise or the Hellfire. There is no third place.

Give your children something that will benefit them not only in this life, but when this life comes to an end.

May Allah protect our children, nurture them upon Tawheed and the correct Aqeedah, keep them firm upon His obedience and make them from the people of Jannah. Ameen

“You’re the haram police.”

A phrase often thrown at someone simply because they advised another Muslim to do what is right or stay away from what is wrong.

But think about what is actually happening: someone gives you a reminder from the Qur’an or the Sunnah, wanting goodness for your dunya and your akhirah, and instead of reflecting on the advice, the response is to mock or insult the person giving it.

Imagine receiving sincere advice from the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه or Umar رضي الله عنه — would we dismiss them because the reminder made us uncomfortable?

We may not always like being corrected, and advice must itself be given with wisdom and good character, but we should never allow our dislike of a reminder to turn into arrogance towards the truth.

A sincere reminder from your brother or sister may be one of the means Allah uses to bring you back to what is better.

Don’t attack the reminder simply because it challenges you. Ask yourself: is what they are saying true?

May Allah make us people who give sincere advice with wisdom and accept sincere advice with humility.

THE ARROGANCE OF YOUTH — WHEN WE THINK WE KNOW IT ALL

One of the dangers of youth is becoming too arrogant to accept advice.

At 15, 20 or 25, we can feel as though we understand the world. Our parents advise us and instead of listening, we become frustrated. Someone older and more experienced corrects us, and rather than reflecting on their words, our first instinct is to reject them.

Youth comes with energy, confidence, zeal and ambition — but these blessings should never become a reason for arrogance.

As the years pass, we often look back and realise just how little we actually understood.

The advice from our parents that once annoyed us begins to make sense. The warnings we dismissed become lessons we eventually learn ourselves — sometimes through painful experience.

Being young isn’t the problem. Being unteachable is.

A wise person doesn’t believe that accepting advice makes them weak. They understand that sincere advice can save them from mistakes they haven’t yet lived long enough to recognise.

So when your parents advise you, don’t immediately become defensive.

When someone older corrects you, don’t automatically assume they’re against you.

And when sincere advice reaches you, ask yourself:

“What if there is something here that I need to hear?”

Humility can save you years of regret.

May Allah ﷻ grant our youth humility, wisdom and the ability to recognise and accept sincere advice. May He allow us to honour our parents, benefit from those with experience and protect us from arrogance. Āmeen
