Downham Church

Downham Church St Margaret's Church The church is dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch - slayer of dragons and patron saint of child bearing.

We know that there has been a church in Downham since the mid thirteenth century and it is likely that Christians have worshipped on this site for over a thousand years. Devotion to this lady became popular between 1200 and 1300 and there are some 80 churches sharing our dedication from this period. The oldest part of the present building is the redbrick tower that dates from around 1470. The main

part of the church, the nave, was rebuilt in the nineteenth century using much of the material from the thirteenth century building. In March 1977 the building was gutted by fire following an arson attack therefore you may be surprised when you enter the building for the first time to find a bright, modern interior with comfortable chairs.

Easter 2026

It was good to see so many people in church on Easter Sunday. We started the day at 6.15am with our sunrise service in the churchyard. The sky was clear this year and we were able to see the sun rising over the hill. It was good to see people from other local churches joining us. After the service we adjourned to the church for Hot Cross Buns and refreshments.

Easter this year fell on the first Sunday of the month when we normally have our simple Family Service at 11.00am. We couldn't let Easter go by without celebrating the Eucharist, so we combined the two services into an All Age Communion. We weren't sure how it would work, but we were delighted to see over 60 people there and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Potted plants and Easter eggs were given out at the end of the service, then we enjoyed more Hot Cross Buns.
