This petition has not been created by the Church and is not formally endorsed by any of our PCCs, but there is merit in the proposal for a safer crossing, and we encourage parishioners to read the petition and make their own judgment.
The volume of traffic on Hitchin Road in the centre of Upper Caldecote makes crossing the road extremely hazardous. At a rate of a vehicle every few seconds, crossing the road poses a serious risk. Some drivers are going noticeably above the speed limit , as the speed camera doesn’t cover the stretch from the Post Office to the Biggleswade Road junction, which exacerbates the problem.
This presents a real danger for children and parents crossing the road to get to and from our school, Caldecote CE Academy, for older children crossing after being dropped by school buses, and for anyone else needing to cross the road for any reason including visiting the Post Office.
The petitioners feel that a crossing is needed in this area to enable all of these necessary foot journeys to happen safely. It has become increasingly important with the building of additional family homes on the west side of the village.
If you are concerned about this, you are invited to sign the e-petition that can be found at
