🚒 Through the night, while firefighters battled a major blaze in Bermondsey, our Emergency Response Vehicle was there to support those on the front line.

Last night, our team was on scene at the recycling centre fire in Bermondsey, providing refreshments and a place of rest for firefighters and other emergency responders during the protracted incident that many of you may have seen reported in the news.

Thankfully, only one person required treatment at the scene by the London Ambulance Service, and no other injuries were reported. While there was significant damage to the site, we are grateful that everyone remained safe.

Our team was on hand between 7:40pm until 3:35am, serving those working tirelessly in challenging circumstances. During that time, we provided:

☕ Nearly 175 cups of tea and coffee
🥤 Over 500 cans of drink
🍫 Just under 600 chocolate bars
🍞 17 loaves of bread, which were made into cheese and corned beef sandwiches

We are proud to stand alongside the London Fire Brigade, offering practical support and a warm welcome when it's needed most.

And once again, we're thankful to the Hovis factory in Erith for the donation of fresh bread. It's great to know you're there when we 'knead' you.

📣BIG ANNOUNCEMENT:
The Salvation Army's Starfish Mentoring Programme is coming to schools in Bexley Borough soon!

The Salvation Army recognises that the UK is experiencing a mental health crisis among young people, as data tells us that children in the UK are currently referred to NHS mental health services at a rate of one every three minutes. That works out at over 500 referrals a day. (The Guardian https://share.google/xJminmLuf0SkMUqoC).

Did you know that The Salvation Army runs a mentoring programme across the United Kingdom, aimed at supporting young people who have been identified as needing help with their health, educational or social development? Well, we do! And we're excited to announce that Starfish Mentoring is coming to schools in Bexley Borough soon, following the initial training of three Starfish Mentors!

Starfish is a mentoring programme for young people aged between 9-16 years. Working within a school's student wellbeing support, Starfish Mentoring offers early help focused on emotional health and wellbeing, personal development and life skills. You can find out more information about this effective mentoring programme by watching this 3 minute video:

Did you know that The Salvation Army serves around 250,000 cups of tea to people we serve across the United Kingdom every week?

☕ Throughout our history, we've been giving out cups of tea to those in need; recognising that a good brew at the right time can bring a much needed moment of peace. Since starting in Victorian Britain, we've been producing and selling tea to raise money for our work; serving tea to service men and women close to the frontline and to people in underground air raid shelters during the Second World War.

☕ We still use cups of tea as a simple and practical way of showing care and offering comfort to all kinds of people: in our Lifehouses for homeless people; at the scene of fires, incidents and emergencies from our Emergency Response Vehicle; and in 700 churches and community centres around the UK and Ireland.

☕ Today we celebrated the humble cuppa at our CAMEO (Come and Meet Each Other) group. We learnt about where in the world our tea comes from, tasted different kinds of tea and crucially, heard from members of our group as they shared a cup of Rosie Lee together - inspired by Bangladeshi artist Yasmin Jahan Nupur's 'Let Me Get You a Nice Cup of Tea' 2022 exhibition at the Tate Modern (https://share.google/LhiroJ8h16iAyvBga)

☕ The kettle is always on at The Salvation Army in Bexleyheath and at our Community Hub in Welling. Whether you're wanting to join us for our engaging midweek community-based programmes, worship with us, or are looking for practical assistance, you're always welcome to join us for a cuppa - and a biscuit!

We take great joy in seeing members of our community meeting together and connecting with one another, regardless of age.

This afternoon, our doors were open for our weekly CAMEO (Come and Meet Each Other) Club, which provides a fun, safe, interactive and fully inclusive space for older members of our community. The kettle was on, refreshments were served, games were played, conversations were shared, laughter was had and company was enjoyed.

If you'd like to join the group or know somebody who might, please do get in touch! We're always happy to welcome and include new people.

When you're the London Fire Brigade tackling 400 tonnes of scrap metal on fire and you're in need of food, drink, energy and an opportunity to take a well deserved rest; who you gonna call? The Salvation Army's Emergency Response Team!

The team from Bexleyheath Salvation Army were once again called on and happy to work alongside our partner the London Fire Brigade in providing some comfort, whilst they tackled a large fire in a nearby metal recycling yard.

We're grateful to the heroes in the LFB for getting the incident under control and doing their best to keep our city safe from fires. Thank you LFB!
