St Michael's Old Church, Betws-y-Coed

St Michael's Old Church, Betws-y-Coed Built in the 14th century, St Michael's Old Church is the oldest building in the village. See our website for details - http://www.stmichaelsbyc.org.uk.

It is now run by the St Michael's Betws-y-coed Trust (Reg No 1081038) but the churchyard remains the responsibility of the Bro Gwydyr Ministry Area (Reg No 1181120). Built in the 14th century, St Michael's Church is the oldest building in Betws-y-Coed, and is located on the banks of the River Conwy. Replaced by the parish church of St Mary's in 1873, St Michael's lay slumbering peacefully througho

ut the twentieth century. But by the early 1990's it was in a sorry state, with a leaking roof and associated plaster damage and it was urgently in need of repair work. In 1994, the Friends of St Michael’s was formed, to raise both awareness of the building, and money to preserve it. Declared redundant in 2000, the building is now leased from the Church in Wales by the St Michael’s Betws-y-Coed Trust, a registered charity (No 1081038), run by the Friends. Nowadays hundreds of people visit St Michael’s in Betws-y-Coed in beautiful Snowdonia every year, and there are many different reasons for appreciating this simple and humble building. Visitors from all over the world come and enjoy the oldest building in the village, whilst for those with an interest in history, the stone effigy of Gruffydd ap Dafydd Goch has a special fascination. Students of architecture and church history learn much from the inside arrangements of the church. Most people appreciate a quiet place in which to sit and think and pray. St Michael’s is important for local Christians too, and despite being declared redundant it is still consecrated. As a balance to the splendour of St Mary’s Parish Church, reminding us of the glory of God, St Michael’s has a special intimacy and simplicity which can speak of the closeness of God. Nor is St Michael’s important only for Anglican Christians: because the building dates from before the religious divisions of recent times, it belongs in some sense to all of us, of whatever denomination, a symbol of the unity which is God’s will for his church here. Although the church is now officially closed for regular public worship, a service is normally held on St Michael’s Day (29th September) and a candle-lit Carol Service at Christmas tide. In addition, the Friends organise a Flower Festival in September each year, which attracts hundreds of visitors to admire the floral displays which are provided by many of the local village organisations. Join the Friends of St Michael's and help keep a little bit of history alive for future generations.

Some drone footage of the new footbridge being built next to St Michael's. We can't wait for it to open, and for the 'new lychgate' to be brought back into use and our churchyard to fully open. Oh, and Old Church Road to be available for parking and the contractors to leave!

Slightly bemoaning the loss of local banking facilities. I wish for the days when we could pop down to the Midland Bank / HSBC in Betws-y-coed rather than dealing with people online. It's ten years ago this month since the branch here closed. 😕

A look into the 'hole' in front of the New Lychgate which, somewhat to our surprise, is still standing, albeit propped up with scaffolding. The position of the anchors for the cable stays for the new bridge are now apparent.

Thank you to Rev'd Canon Stuart Elliott and St Mary's Church for hosting our Carol Service tonight, and to the St Mary's Singers for their beautiful music - it was a lovely event!

A lovely, alternative Carol Service at St Mary’s, for St Michael’s Church, tonight. A big thank you to all who organised it, took part and attended. Next year we’re all looking forward to attending it back in St Michael’s. ⛪️😃

Happy Christmas from the Friends of St Michael's! This year our surroundings look a little different with the 'new' lychgate approximately two feet away from an extremely large hole where the foundations for the new Sapper's Bridge are currently being built.
Because of the disruption and lack of parking in Old Church Road, this year's Carol Service organised by the Friends of St Michael's will be held in St Mary's Church, Betws-y-Coed next Sunday 28th December at 6pm. Please join us to sing carols, hear some appropriately festive readings and enjoy some seasonal refreshments in the hall afterwards.

Nadolig Llawen gan Gyfeillion Eglwys Sant Mihangel! Eleni mae ein hamgylchoedd yn edrych ychydig yn wahanol gyda'r porth bach 'newydd' tua dwy droedfedd i ffwrdd o dwll mawr iawn lle mae sylfeini Pont y Cloddiwr newydd yn cael eu hadeiladu ar hyn o bryd.
Oherwydd yr aflonyddwch a'r diffyg parcio yn Heol yr Hen Eglwys, cynhelir Gwasanaeth Carolau eleni a drefnir gan Gyfeillion Eglwys Sant Mihangel yn Eglwys y Santes Fair, Betws-y-Coed ddydd Sul nesaf 28 Rhagfyr am 6pm. Ymunwch â ni i ganu carolau, clywed rhai darlleniadau Nadoligaidd priodol a mwynhau lluniaeth tymhorol yn y neuadd wedyn.

Sunday 28th December at 6pm.

This year's Alternative Carol Service being organised by the Friends of St Michael's, is even more alternative than usual - because it's being held in St Mary's Church, Betws-y-Coed! This is due to the current building works in Old Church Road outside St Michael's meaning a lack of available parking, so as a one off, we are moving this year's Carol Service over to St Mary's. The service will still be in the same format and will be followed by seasonal refreshments in the church hall. Do please come and support the Friends of St Michael's at this lovely annual event.

Our thanks to Rev'd Stuart Elliott and the Bro Gwydyr Ministry Area for letting us use St Mary's Church this year.

Nos Sul Rhagfyr 28ain - 6yh.

Mae Gwasanaeth Carolau Amgen eleni, sy'n cael ei drefnu gan Gyfeillion Eglwys Sant Mihangel, hyd yn oed yn fwy amgen nag arfer - oherwydd ei fod yn cael ei gynnal yn Eglwys Santes Fair, Betws-y-Coed! Mae hyn oherwydd y gwaith adeiladu presennol yn Ffordd Hen Eglwys y tu allan i Eglwys Sant Mihangel sy'n golygu diffyg parcio ar gael, felly fel digwyddiad unwaith ac am byth, rydym yn symud Gwasanaeth Carolau eleni i Eglwys Santes Fair. Bydd y gwasanaeth yn dal i fod yn yr un fformat a bydd lluniaeth tymhorol yn cael ei ddilyn yn neuadd yr eglwys. Dewch i gefnogi Cyfeillion Eglwys Sant Mihangel yn y digwyddiad blynyddol hyfryd hwn.

Ein diolch i'r Parchedig Stuart Elliott ac Ardal Weinidogaeth Bro Gwydyr am ganiatáu inni ddefnyddio Eglwys Santes Fair eleni.

We thought some may be interested to read this post from Llandudno's Home Front Museum, regarding the late Barbara Shorrocks-Carter, one of the founding members of the Friends of St Michael's.

Today 1940, seventeen-year-old Barbara Shorrocks was quietly minding her own business, walking along a public footpath at Betws-y-Coed when she was shot. The perpetrator was a member of the local Home Guard and employee of Betws-y-Coed Urban Council. He was sat at his desk cleaning a machine gun (as you do) and, not realising that there was still a round in it, pulled the trigger. The bullet shattered the glass of his office window and struck Miss Shorrocks in the forearm. The distressed teenager was tended to by the local doctor before being taken to Llandudno Hospital at Maesdu. Owing to the seriousness of her injury, her arm had to be amputated and it was a fortnight before she could return to her abode at Coedcynheler Road, Betws.

We are pleased to advise that St Michael's Churchyard and St Michael's Old Church will reopen on Saturday 29th November following some minor roof repairs to slates which had slipped due to the piling works for the new Sapper's Bridge.

Whilst we won't be opening the church daily, a key is available from the Conwy Valley Railway Museum over the road during their opening hours.

Work continues on the construction of the new Sapper's Bridge, next to our historic 14th century church. Unfortunately Conwy Council closed the churchyard and church in mid September, and we have had no visitors, and no income since then. Our income for September was down 75.5% and our income for October was down 100%. The reason for the closure was due to the risk of the vibration from piling works causing slates to fall off the roof. Whilst 8 slates have slipped, none have actually fallen, and the contractors will be repairing the damage at their expense as well as giving us a small donation. Whilst we're not in immediate financial difficulty, we have set up a GoFundMe appeal in case people would like to make a donation to mitigate the losses caused by the enforced closure - the link to donate is https://gofund.me/e5a9308f6

A temporary walkway has been created through Erw Hedd Cemetery to enable pedestrians to get past. However any hope that the 'No Pedestrian Access' signs at the end of Old Church Road will be removed have been dashed because the temporary walkway is less than 1.2m wide! A real 'jobsworth' situation, particularly as one end of the path emerges onto the road where there is absolutely no pavement at all! Our advice to visitors is to ignore the No Pedestrian Access signs as there IS Pedestrian Access! What an absolutely ridiculous situation!

We are hopeful that St Michael's will be able to reopen to visitors over the next few weeks but we're not holding our breath.

Because of the lack of nearby parking we've already taken the decision to hold this year's Carol Service in St Mary's Church, Betws-y-Coed by kind permission of the Bro Gwydyr Ministry Area. This will be on the evening of Sunday 28th December 2025.

Here's a few photos taken earlier today.

Since the beginning of September, our income is down by over £1,200 due to the building work on the new Sapper's Bridge and Conwy Council preventing access into the churchyard due to the risk of slates falling off the church roof. Whilst the contractors have thankfully agreed to make good any damage, we have lost income from this year's Flower Festival and expect our income to be seriously down until the bridge opens at the end of September 2026.
We have therefore set up a GoFundMe account to help mitigate the losses. If you can leave us a donation it would be hugely appreciated!
