St. Gregory the Great (born c. 540, Rome [Italy]—died March 12, 604,
Rome; Western feast day, September 3 [formerly March 12, still
Observed in the East]) was the pope, the leader of the Roman Catholic
Church, from 590 to 604. A reformer and excellent administrator,
he is considered to be the founder of the medieval papacy, which
exercised both secular and spiritual power.
