It is with deep regret and heavy hearts we have to inform you that the 95th Glasgow Girls’ Brigade will cease to function as a Company herewith.
This decision from us has not been easy but with only 4 Officers, falling numbers over the past 5 years and COVID, this is the decision we have come to. Three of our Officers are in Education, with one currently going on maternity leave, and the other is over 70 and past the GB projected retirement age.
This has factored into our decision.
Although it is a sad day for everyone involved in the Company, we give thanks for all the good times that we have had.
At this time we think about our girls and the many years of joy and laughter you have given us. We remember teaching you the Dashing White Sergeant with Ann in the middle of the hall with a broom, stamping out “ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8, pas de bas, pas de bas, swing your partners round” and the laughter when you got it right and even the laughter when you got it wrong! Liz with her Arts and Crafts expertise and designing with the girls the 2014 Commonwealth Banner which hangs proudly in the New Hall and also the Remembrance Tree which hangs in the Church. Fiona, who added her own twist to the Spiritual Section and Lauren who took the girls for singing and ensured that their diction was correct! Fiona and Lauren putting together our Christmas Nativity in December 2019, with Explorers dressed up as Mary, Joseph, shepherds, angels and innkeepers and the Juniors and Brigaders enthralling our parents and congregation of St Andrew’s with their singing. Yes, we have a lot to be thankful for!
We remember our trips to the pantomime (oh yes we do!), Brigaders trip to Pebbles Spa at Girvan for a day of relaxation and also the many weekends away to Ayr, dolphin watching at Cromarty and tree climbing and giant swing at Dalguise.
We have had lots of laughter and fun but we have had a few tears as well. In February 2019, we were devastated at the loss of our dear friend, Elizabeth.
To us Elizabeth was Miss GB and a fountain of knowledge. She was also our treasurer, and oh boy, she told us, sorry, advised us, when to spend and when not to spend! We miss her so much.
We would like to take this opportunity of thanking our National Director of GB Scotland, Caroline Goodfellow for her help and advice. Also to GB Greater Glasgow Region and North East District for the friendships we have formed over the years.
We give thanks to our former Captains, Leaders and Helpers who gave so much in the past. Also to David Hamilton who audited our accounts to be sent to OSCR. We thank Mrs Tuton for her unfailing service to our company over the years.
Thanks to our parents, past and present, who have supported our company over the years, and finally, our girls, we hope that you have made happy memories of our time together and that you will grow up to be good citizens with all the life skills you have learned at Girls’ Brigade.
If you want your GB journey to continue, you can do so at our linked Church, Mure Memorial Garrowhill.
There are also GB Companies in Barlanark, Easterhouse, Coatbridge and Uddingston. A list of all companies can be found on the GB Scotland website.
If you continue please let us know and we will ensure your service record is transferred.
Finally, we wish to thank Rev Sandra Black, Kirk Session and Congregation of St Andrew’s for all the messages of support which we have received.
This means so much to us.
Ann, Liz, Fiona and Lauren
