Raisins 2nd Edition Out Today! 

This month we're exploring the stories of Éric Taillet and Françoise Roumieux. These two are unalike as individuals, but both are neoterics in their regions. Françoise (images 5-8), President of Femmes Vignes Rhone, “works to promote women's role within the traditionally masculine environment of wine by promoting cooperation as opposed to competition.” Éric (images 1-4), Founder of the Meunier Institute, dedicates himself to the promotion of Pinot Meunier by “discovering terroirs, exchanging production methods, and sharing vintages with as many people as possible.” Their leadership changes tastes, shepherds healthier farming, and makes winemaking better.

Raisins is a box of preserved histories, living legends, and communal story telling. While we are kick-starting this journal with our stories, you too are invited to contribute your creative pieces inspired by wine passions.

This edition contains:

Saved by a Donkey - A WWII era tale of two brothers who planted a vineyard in spite of a hopeless time. Images 8-10.

The Land of YES! - A story about the birth, the discovery, and the perseverance of a great Georgian winery. Images 5-7.

We are headed to season in the Northern Hemisphere, while in New Zealand at Spring has sprung! ​​​​​​​​​This family run winery keeps sustainability at the core of everything they do. They are a part of the Sustainable Winegrowers New Zealand program, and in 2020 alone they planting over 500 native plants on the banks of the Ōpaoa River. They constantly seek to boost biodiversity, increase habitat for native bird life and improve soil health. They now use environmentally friendly light weight bottles to reduce carbon emissions. The work of Dave Clouston and their winemaker, Sanna Stander, is creating a legacy for the Clouston family and the Marlborough community.​​​​​​​​​

We are so excited to be working with the wines of Domaine Sérafin for the release of their 2021 vintage. Established in 1947 by Stanislaus Sérafin, a mason. It was his son, Christian, who started working the land and making the wine in 1968. For 20 years, Christian worked for his father until he took over the winery officially in 1988. Since 2001, Christian has slowly retired and left the domaine to the 3rd generation of Serafins, daughter Karine and niece Frédérique. The new winemakers remain loyal to the house style, with an emphasis here on very old vines and low yields. Two women, farming organically on magnificent terroir with perfectly selected small plots of old vines, making true Vin de Garde wines built to last, bucking the modern trend for light, pretty wines which can be consumed upon release. Meunier is Eric’s self-proclaimed; “Life, passion, and reason for being a winegrower.” With old-vine Meunier, Eric is in the process of organic certification -- he actively modifies cultivation methods, the system of pruning, row spacing, and vine height in pursuit of the finest fruit. Eric established the Meunier Institute, and it is his old-vine cuttings that were selected to be cloned for local Champagne nurseries.

New growth at Domaine Thomas & Fils in Verdigny. Julien Thomas never stops growing as a winemaker. In the vineyards he continues the challenging conversion to biodynamics, and in the cellar he has begun to vinify a portion of the harvest in clay amphorae.
