Two festivals in one! Pentecost and Aldersgate Day!
Acts 2:1-4
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Aldersgate in many ways reflects Pentecost. Anglican Priest John Wesley, would feel his heart strangely warmed on Aldersgate street. Wesley and his movement, the Methodists had been impacted heavily by this. A movement focused on the Gospel, the Eucharist, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit such as speaking in tongues, healing and other signs of the Spirit through believers.
The disciples of Jesus had experienced all of this as well at Pentecost, people could understand each other as the Spirit gave gift of the tongue in languages people understood, making all hearing the Good News regardless of what language was spoken by each person. The gifts of Tongue enabled the speaker to speak languages they couldn't speak before, and it spread the Good News of Christ. Speaking in tongues means communicating in languages you don't speak, because of the Holy Spirit. It's languages others speak that really exist.
Praise God for the miracles of Pentecost!
