Altitude Mission is being launched by Will and Lara Sussman. We have been running a catered ski chalet business in Meribel for 18 years. About 8 years ago Lara became a Christian, and Will followed a year later – it usually takes him a while to catch up with Lara.
Since becoming Christians, we were wondering why God had placed us in Meribel, and sustained us there, and what he wanted us to do there. There is a small, rarely used, chapel in Meribel, and the door was always closed. One day, as Will was walking down the road talking to God about what he should be doing in Meribel, he looked up and saw the chapel door open. He went in, met the keyholder, and decided that opening up the chapel would be a good plan. We got in touch with CORA (Christian Outreach in the Alps), and in January 2017 we had our first English-Speaking church service in Meribel. There were 6 of us!
We have now had two successful seasons running the church. The services are led by visiting chaplains from the UK arranged by CORA. Our chaplains come in many shapes and sizes, and all share a passion to see God at work in the mountains. We are a non-denominational Bible-centred ministry. Our average congregation size is anything from 12 – 20. On Christmas and Easter the chapel is packed, with about 60 people. We have had some great “God moments”, answers to prayer, wonderful fellowship, and a very real sense that his Spirit is moving in the chapel.
Our vision is to build up the church in Meribel, for there to be a vibrant church community, with lively worship, and a fellowship of believers who will go out and serve Meribel, and witness to the resort. By being loving and welcoming, by being active in resort, and servant-hearted, we want to reach out to seasonnaires, residents and holiday-makers in Meribel who haven’t yet felt God’s love for themselves.
