Բնության պահպանությունը ունի պատմություն: Տեսակների կորուստները, ջրի եւ օդի աղտոտումը, քաղաքների ընդլայնումը, կենդանի էակների անհետացումը եւ ջրային տարածքների անապատացումը մեր ժամանակի բացառիկ երեւույթները չեն: Դեռևս ավելի քան մեկ դար առաջ Գերմանիայում այս անթիվ բնապահպանական խնդիրները շատ ժամանակակից էին:
1899 թվականին այս օրը Շտուտգարտում հիմնադրվել է բնության պահպանության Գերմանական միությունը, այժմ՝ NABU–ն (Naturschutzbund Deutschland):
NABU-ի հիմնական նպատակներն են՝ կենդանիների ապրելավայրերի և կենսաբազմազանության պահպանումը, կայուն գյուղատնտեսության զարգացման խթանումը, անտառների կառավարման և ջրամատակարման համակարգերի զարգացումը, ինչպես նաև հասարակության մեջ բնության պահպանության գաղափարի կարևորության բարձրացումը:
Մոտ 25 տարի առաջ NABU-ն սկսել է գործունեություն ծավալել միջազգային մակարդակով՝ իրականացնելով մոդելային ծրագրեր: Այդ թվում է նաև Հայաստանը, որտեղ ՆԱԲՈՒ-ն ծավալել է իր գործունեությունը 2001թ.-ից: Իսկ արդեն 2010թ.-ից հիմնվել է Գերմանիայի բնության պահպանության Հայաստանյան մասնաճյուղը:
