THE MEANING AND FUNCTION OF THE CROSS.
___________________________________
1. The cross brings forgiveness of sins.
Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for human sin.
1 Peter 2:24: He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross.

2. The cross demonstrates God's love.
The cross is the clearest demonstration of how much God loves humanity.
Romans 5:8: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

3. The cross reconciles us to God.
Sin separated humanity from God, but Christ's sacrifice makes reconciliation with God possible.
Colossians 1:20: God made peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

4. The cross brings salvation.
The message of the cross is central to Christian salvation.
1 Corinthians 1:18: The message of the cross… is the power of God.

5. The cross defeats the power of sin and death
Jesus' death was not a defeat. Through His death and resurrection, He conquered the powers of sin and death.
Colossians 2:14–15 describes Christ canceling the record against us and triumphing over spiritual powers.

6. The cross calls believers to deny themselves
Jesus also used the cross as a picture of discipleship. Following Him means giving up our old way of living and putting God first.
Luke 9:23: Take up their cross daily and follow me.
