The Wolane live near the Qabena, Oromo and Muher people, on the northeastern edge of the Gurage region. The Wolane have an oral culture (the Wolane language is not written according to the Ethnologue.) They are made up of 12 tribes, with some 67 lines of descent. Most of the younger people in the tribe are multi-lingual. The Wolane, Silt 'I and Azarmat-Barbare languages are closely related, and Amharic is often spoken, as well.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Wolane who live in Addis Ababa earn their living as merchants at Merkato. Those living in the Gurage region farm and raise livestock.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Wolane have been Muslim for as long their tribal history records. Christians are only found amongst a few descendants of former administration officials who have come to work in the area. In Mahal Amba there is not a single Christian church. The town is dominated by a giant mosque, which was built by a rich merchant from Saudi Arabia.

What Are Their Needs?

Though some of the Wolane people are Christians, they need more opportunities to obtain gospel materials and learn what it means to follow Christ.

Prayer Topics

1. Pray for Ethiopian churches in the diaspora and in Ethiopia to mobilize their people and resources to reach the Wolane for Christ.
2. Ask God to stir up believers who live near the Wolane to develop good relationships with them and find persons of peace who will welcome the gospel.
3. Ask God to prepare the hearts of the Wolane to hear and receive the gospel.
4. Ask God for a Disciple Making Movement among the Wolane.

In the 19th century the K'abeena were part of the Hadya Kingdom, one of the two principalities of Hadya, an autonomous state ruled by Umar Baska. It became known as Kebena or Hadya Womba. It also became an important commercial and Islamic center under Baska rule.

What Are Their Lives Like?
The Kebena subsist on agriculture. Unlike their southern kinsmen, the Hadya, the Kebena are followers of Islam. The K'abeena people live in Ethiopia's Gurage Zone. This is the name of the people group and their language.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Kebena people are Sunni Muslims who believe that the supreme God, Allah, spoke through his prophet, Mohammed, and taught mankind how to live a righteous life through the Koran and the Hadith. To live a righteous life, you must utter the Shahada (a statement of faith), pray five times a day facing Mecca, fast from sunup to sundown during the month of Ramadan, give alms to the poor, and make a pilgrimage to Mecca if you have the means. They believe that Allah has pre-determined our fates; they minimize free will. In most of the Muslim world, people depend on the spirit world for their daily needs since they regard Allah as too distant. Allah may determine their eternal salvation, but the spirits determine how well we live in our daily lives. For that reason, they must appease the spirits. They often use charms and amulets to help them with spiritual forces.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kebena people need the opportunity to embrace and follow Jesus Christ, the King of kings.

Prayer Items

1, Pray for the Lord to give them an abundant harvest this year as a testimony of his power and goodness.
2, Pray to the Lord to raise up people to faithfully intercede for the Kebena.
3, Ask the Lord to send laborers, especially from among the Hadya to reach the Kebena people.
4, Pray for the Lord to bring about an unstoppable movement to Christ among the Kebena people of Ethiopia.

The Daasanach are a semi-nomadic people living in the arid regions of southwestern Ethiopia, near the Omo River and around Lake Turkana. Their identity is shaped more by shared residence and survival in a harsh environment than by strict ancestry. Historically, they are a combination of different groups who came together and formed a unique culture and tradition.

They are sometimes called the Merille. When modern borders were established, their land was divided between Ethiopia, Kenya, and Sudan, limiting their traditional movement across regions. Known for their strength and resilience, the Daasanach have a strong warrior culture and deeply value their traditions, often resisting outside influence.

What Are Their Lives Like?
Traditionally, the Daasanach were pastoralists, relying heavily on cattle. However, due to environmental challenges and loss of livestock, many have shifted to farming along the Omo River. They grow crops like sorghum, maize, beans, and pumpkins. Some still keep goats and cattle, while others rely on fishing and hunting for survival.

Social structure is strongly tied to livestock ownership.

What Are Their Beliefs?
Most of the Daasanach follow traditional beliefs. They worship a sky god called Waag, believed to be the creator. Spiritual life is centered around rituals, ancestral traditions, and reliance on the spirit world. Only a small number have been reached with the gospel, and Christian presence remains very limited.

What Are Their Needs?
The Daasanach live in challenging conditions, often facing health risks like diseases spread by mosquitoes and tsetse flies. Access to resources, healthcare, and spiritual outreach remains limited. There is a need for continued Bible translation, discipleship, and culturally sensitive mission work.

Prayer Topics

1. Pray for Bible translation work to bear fruit among the Daasanach people.
2. Pray for hearts to turn from traditional beliefs to faith in Jesus Christ.
3. Pray for protection, wisdom, and strength for those serving among them.
4. Pray for a growing movement of people coming to Christ within the Daasanach community.
