It's always good to pray, and today's prayer meeting, led by Debbie, was particularly powerful. Steve led our time of praise, and after the meeting we went on to Mancini's restaurant for our fellowship lunch.

The Old Testament was all about Laws, so it's not surprising that someone should ask Jesus to say which was the greatest commandment. He didn't single out any one of the ten commandments, but paraphrased a number of them.

He said that the greatest of the commandments was to love God with all your heart, soul and mind. Really, that's all God requires of us. He wants us to love him. So, it's not about keeping commandments, or going to church services, or any of the other things that Christians do. It's about a relationship.

Of course, we can show our love in a thousand and one different ways, but the important thing is that we love him. When we do, we'll do whatever pleases him. We'll surrender our will to his. Then, he really is our Lord.

Have you ever noticed that, when you go to church and meet people for the first time, the real Christians stand out as being different? They smile more... they're more helpful... their language is devoid of obscenities... In fact, they're altogether different.

Why is this? It's because they have recognised their own sinfulness and repented. Repentance is a prerequisite of the new birth, by which we become a true Christian believer.

Sadly, many people who attend our churches have never owned up to their own sinfulness. Consequently, they have never experienced a genuine heart-felt repentance. They are religious without being saved. They are recognised by their behaviour, which isn't Christian, and even by their language, which can become unsavoury when they don't get their own way.

Can these people be saved? Yes, of course they can. Christ came to save sinners, but sinners must want to be saved, and they must acknowledge their own sinfulness. We are first called to repentance, after which we can be born again.

Why does the New Testament (Hebrews 10: 25) tell us that we're not to neglect the assembling of ourselves together? What makes church attendance so important?

Church attendance is important because it's one of the places where we can experience true Christian fellowship. Yes, we can meet with our Christian friends in other contexts, but the church is the coming together of the body of Christ, and it's where we can receive encouragement.

It's essential that we encourage one another in the faith. We can share our experiences, whether negative or positive, and testify to the goodness of God. Being with other believers is the best way to develop our ministry gifts, and discover God's will for our lives.

I realise that no church fellowship is perfect, but even at its worst, it will enable us to grow and develop as believers. It will also present opportunities for us to encourage others in their Christian walk. This is why we're told not to neglect the assembling of ourselves together.

It's only when we've been a Christian for some time that we realise that God really is good. Having been a Christian for over 60 years, I can testify to the fact that God is good, and God is faithful. In fact, the song 'Goodness of God' has become one of my favourites.

The Psalmist invites us to taste and see that the Lord is good. There's no better way of proving God's goodness than to experience it for yourself. We can do that when we invite the Lord into our lives, and we begin to live our lives for God. Then, day after day, we'll see the goodness of God in every aspect of life. Why not put it to the test?

Timothy was a young pastor when the Apostle Paul wrote to him. He told him not to allow people to look down on him just because he was young. It was good advice, because there's nothing wrong in being young. In fact, being a young pastor has many advantages.

However, it must also be remembered that there's nothing wrong in being old. Old folks have the wisdom of experience, and they have much to offer the body of Christ. This is also true when it comes to women in ministry. We all have something to offer.

Paul's message is clear... If God has called you to preach, then preach. Don't let anyone belittle your ministry, just because you don't fit their pre-conceived ideas as to what a minister should look like.

Today, the church was open for 'A Cup of Joy and a Chatter'. It was a superb opportunity for people to drop in and enjoy a little company. This session, the first of many to be held on Thursdays, had 20 in attendance.
