💥 Imam al-Nawawī (رحمه الله) narrated from Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī (رضي الله عنه):
Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
“We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a military expedition. We were six men sharing one camel, taking turns to ride it. Our feet became injured and our toenails fell off, so we wrapped cloth around our feet. This expedition was therefore called Ghazwat Dhāt al-Riqāʿ (the Expedition of Patches), because of the pieces of cloth we tied to our feet.
Abū Mūsā said: Abū Burdah narrated this ḥadīth, then disliked mentioning it, saying: ‘What benefit is there in mentioning this?’ It seemed he disliked that it be perceived as something he was publicizing.”
[Agreed upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim]
⸻
📌 Concise Explanation:
• This ḥadīth shows the condition of the noble Companions (رضي الله عنهم) in the expedition, how six men would share one camel, highlighting their patience, asceticism, and contentment.
• The hardships they endured were severe, to the extent their feet were torn and their nails fell off, forcing them to bind them with cloth. Hence the battle was named Dhāt al-Riqāʿ.
• Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī (رضي الله عنه) disliked narrating this out of fear that people might think he was recounting hardship to gain admiration. This reflects the sincerity of the Companions in concealing their righteous deeds.

[Āl ʿImrān: 146]
“How many a prophet fought, and with him fought many devoted men; they never lost heart for what befell them in the cause of Allah, nor did they weaken nor humble themselves. And Allah loves the patient.”

💥 The Prophet ﷺ said:
From ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (رضي الله عنه):
“The simplicity (al-badhādhah) is from īmān.”
[Reported by Abū Dāwūd and Aḥmad with a sound chain]
• Al-badhādhah means avoiding excess in luxury, adornment, and display; preferring humility and simplicity. It does not mean neglecting cleanliness, but rather avoiding artificiality and extravagance.
