- You are all aware through my discourses and interviews in the last 14+ years, that my tutelage in the shastras comes from the school of Visishtadvaita (as developed by Bhagavad Ramanuja & nourished by a variety of acharyas that include Swami Vedanta Desika) and that I adhere to the theology of Sri Vaishnavism thus. So my knowledge is limited to these scriptures. Nevertheless, my admiration for acharyas who have worked to strengthen other schools of philosophy and theology continue till date. Hundreds of discourses (in English & Tamizh) have focussed on Adi Shankara's works (like Bhaja Govindam, Kanakadhara Stotram, Matru Panchakam, Shatpadi Stotram etc.), Sadashiva Brahmendra's kritis, Muthusvami Diksh*tar's life and works, Appayya Diksh*tar's works & commentaries, Narayana Theertha's Tarangams, Narayana Bhattatiri's Narayaneeyam, Nalvar's select padalgal, Arunagirinathar's Thiruppugazh, Nilakanta Diksh*tar's works, Tyagaraja's life and works, Ample references to Mahaperiyava (whom I hold very dear to my heart) & Sringeri Acharyas, Sri Madhvacharya's works (like Mbh Tatparya Nirnaya & Nakha Stuti), Raghavendra Tirtha's works, Purandaradasa & Kanakadasa's works. Some of them differ in philosophy (like Advaita or Dvaita) and some by theology (Saivam or Saktam). But what unites all of them is their purpose to enlighten the society and enrich their knowledge. Their intent was truly noble and their efforts were super high. So irrespective of our individual adherence to a philosophy and theology, our choice can VERY well co-exist with deriving the finer points that they have presented. Well, even if we continue to differ strongly with them, there are academic ways of doing it (through research papers, articles and participation in vidwat sadas etc.).
Surely SOCIAL MEDIA isn't the right platform.
Even in Srivaishnavism, I personally hold acharyas like Periavacchan Pillai, Manavala Mamunigal, Doddacharya etc. in the highest pedestal. I have quoted them a zillion times because they were bhaktas of the highest order. But in the last few years, (and months especially), when I see posts in SM where people would have have never been able to compose a verse or even explain its purport, use disrespectful words on a towering acharya like Swami Vedanta Desika, it pains me to the core. By speaking against a guru in such ways, only pulls us down. SM is not the place to continuously spread falsehood, negativity and slander. While each school of philosophy and theology have their own nice features, works etc, let us learn to respect each other, and give due respect to the acharyas of their schools. While I will continue to trod the path my acharyas have respected, I vow that I will respect all the giants of Bharata bhumi, irrespective of their philosophy/theology.
One personal request - Urge my followers to never forward posts that keep spreading slander on great acharyas. We can't stop those select 'attention seekers' who keep negativity as their weapon, but we can at least stop reading such posts and forwarding that to others.
