MQ Artists-in-Residence Open Studio

As part of the MQ AiR Open Studio, the current MQ Artists-in-Residence open the doors to their studios on the MuseumsQuartier site. The eight international artists will give an insight into their work through short presentations. There will be a guided tour at 17h, after which you can meet the artists in person and chat with them over an aperitif.

The MuseumsQuartier's international Artist-in-Residence programme, which is realized in cooperation with partners such as BMEIA, BMKÖS and tranzit(dot)org/ERSTE Stiftung, has been offering around 60 international artists the opportunity to live and work in the MuseumsQuartier every year since 2002, to further develop their artistic projects and to get to know the local art and culture scene. The aim of the Artist-in-Residence program is also to continuously stimulate the art and cultural scene in the Austrian capital with new impulses from outside and to promote exchange by involving international artists.

In October, I am a TONSPUR sound art resident at the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna, where I will be working on a sound installation to be premiered in February 2025.

First iteration of the PolyViola builded for me by the great sound artist, instrument builder and engineer, one of the most amazing spirit of the legendary STEIM (Studio voor Elektro-Instrumentale Muziek, 1969–2021) Sukandar Kartadinata: a project to replace a suitcase full of pedals with a laptop and a small controller, while adding new sonic possibilities and gestural control via sensors.

The current setup:
- ZETA pickup with custom preamp per string
- BOSS GK-5 for multichannel digital transmission via A2B
- sensor hub based on Teensy with I2S signal insertion
- sensors are 1) IMU 2) touch slider as “6th string” 3) pressure sensor below neck 4) “MouseBow” optical tracker - more to come :)
- Audio&MIDI-Controller with A2B receiver, 8-channel audio interface, and a bunch of knobs&buttons
- MacBook Air running MaxMSP

The DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program is committed to including and presenting a wide array of voices and perspectives, and to advancing gender equality. Each year, around twenty outstanding practitioners from diverse cultural backgrounds are invited to Berlin. Zsolt Sőrés is one of the Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD fellows 2021.

Sőrés does not think of himself as a conventional musician or sound composer but uses the moniker “ghost sonic ontologist” to describe himself and his professional activities. His art has always had higher ambitions than simply representing reality, even if stating so might be reading into things too much. The artist’s engaging sounds reveal social differences, anomalies, wounds, dystopias, and utopias.

In articulating and reflecting on the fluid nature of our modernity, Zsolt Sőrés has become Ahad (one), because it was the only way for him to effectively transcend an overly structured consciousness. In the same way, his iconic instrument, the 5-string viola, abandoned the realm of elitist tonal representations to commit blasphemous attacks on performing arts conventions, becoming an extension of the artist’s body. Mitragyna Metro (2021), Sőrés’s latest recording project, demonstrates this schizo-phonic turn quite impressively.
