DOUSING DESPONDENCY

KEY VERSE: "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance." - (PSALM 42:5).

TEXT: PSALM 42:1-5

As German bombs fell on England during World War II, the situation became desperate. Hearts were filled with discouragement and thoughts of defeat. Then Winston Churchill's voice echoed over the radio. It inspired the nation and boosted morale among a people on the verge of giving up. On a spiritual level, believers find hope in God too, as they hear the voice that resonates through the pages of His Word. In moments of discouragement, Christians serve as a testimony to those who have never met God or heard His voice.

David exemplifies this in our devotional text as he expresses acute hunger and "thirst for God, the living God". In his hopelessness, he recalled the exhilarating moments he had in God's house and presence. Reminiscences of the voice of joy and praise, filled and blessed by the testimonies of God's faithfulness and the certainty that flows from trust in God, he gladly addresses his soul and jerks back from the abyss of despondency.

Are you troubled about any ugly situation or setback? Cheer up and look up! Here are gems and clues for you as a Christian pilgrim, who could, at times, be discouraged and cast down. David didn't. He queried and counselled his soul. First is to know that neither discouragement nor despondency is a sign of weakness. Elijah is one biblical character who fits this description. After defeating the prophets of Baal, he received a death threat from Jezebel. His hope was shattered, and his despondency set in. He wanted to die! The Lord did not rebuke him for his feelings but sent an angel to provide for his physical needs. In our times of discouragement, su***de is no option; it only leads to a more serious, endless and interminable suffering in hell. The present challenge or problem has not diminished God's love for us. He desires to lead us to a place of a renewed vision of His power!

The time to exit the discouragement mode is now! Take the verifiable steps that effectively log you out, which include a deep, interminable longing for God. This is what Isaiah calls "waiting upon the Lord". Second, you will do well to consciously recall and delight in God's past acts of mercy, divine interventions, and faithfulness. Finally, you must deliberately seek the remedy of praise to uplift your downcast, crestfallen, and discouraged heart. Beloved, don't give in to despair! God will certainly lead you in paths of love, light and joy, where you will find new hope.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God always opens the window of hope for His own in the darkest of times

STAND IN CHRIST'S LIBERTY

KEY VERSE: “For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another (GALATIANS 5:13).

BIBLE TEXT: GALATIANS 5:1-13

The Christian liberty is the freedom Christ has purchased for the children of God through His death on the Cross of Calvary. The devil fights this liberty in diverse ways. When young Christians fail to understand their liberty in Christ, the devil keeps reminding them about their past sins to create major stumbling blocks to their prayers. It is a common strategy of the devil to manipulate them and push them back into their shells. Once you are born again through genuine repentance, you have the liberty to serve God in truth and in Spirit because God does not give us the spirit of fear but He gives us the Spirit of power and of a sound mind.

When God has forgiven you, you are justified by faith and no longer bound to the yoke of sins. However, this liberty is not a guarantee to continue in sins believing the erroneous doctrine of eternal security. Apostle Paul warns: “for, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another” (Galatians 5:13).

PRAYER: Lord, help me to understand and enjoy my liberty in Christ.

CHALLENGE: Don’t use the Christian liberty to sin.

QUOTE: You have the liberty.

THE TEMPTATION OF JESUS - PART 3

KEY VERSE: “Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” (MATTHEW 4:10)

BIBLE TEXT: MATTHEW 4:8-11

Jesus has power and authority over Satan and He always uses them at the appropriate time. In this situation, Jesus did not hesitate to command Satan to get behind Him. Satan knew that Jesus is over and above Him yet he tempted Christ to bow down in worship to him. Can the master bow to worship his servant? No, Jesus cannot, will not and did not bow to Satan. As a friend of Jesus, you must know who you are in Christ. You are a joint-heir with Christ. What Jesus has is what you have because of the privilege of sonship. Do not throw your costly apparels (Christian experiences) to the dogs. The things of this world as stated in 1 John 2:15-17 will pass away.

Let the love of God and the things of eternal value be uppermost in your heart. Do not yield to the enticement and allurement that your friends are using to deceive you. The fashions of the world may look attractive, but they will soon pass away. Do not follow them. Do not seek to please the world. Strive to please only God. Jesus has set the example of refusing to bow to Satan in order to show us that we can be victorious. You can do likewise. Become His friend if you are not, follow Him faithfully and consistently and He will give you the grace to overcome Satan.

PRAYER: Lord, please help me to obey You only and not yield to pressure to obey, worship or serve Satan.

HIS NAME JESUS

KEY VERSE: "And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." - (MATTHEW 1:21).

TEXT: MATTHEW 1:18-25

In Scripture, names aren't just labels — they are declarations of identity, destiny, and divine calling. In several cases, God revealed His plans by changing someone's name: Abram became Abraham, Sarai became Sarah, Jacob became Israel, and Simon became Peter. What we are called often reflects what we are becoming in God's hands.

The angel that announced the birth of Christ declared, "…and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins", denoting His mission on earth. Matthew's account of the event begins and ends with the miraculous — the conception of the Virgin Mary, the angelic visitation, and the disposition of Joseph. All these point to the uniqueness and supremacy of Christ. It is this colossal event that explains Paul's assertive thought in his epistle to the Colossians, "For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily".

It should be noted here that even though we don't have to pry into the mysteries of Christ's incarnation, that event was a necessary condition for the redemption of humanity. Notice also that God chose to use a devout virgin who was espoused to Joseph, a religious man. It was therefore easy for God's angel to convince them and extract compliance with the divine plan. The whole of these events accorded with prophecies given much earlier than the time. The birth of Jesus is the vehicle of joy into troubled, sin-sick and suffering hearts. His Name portends His mission, ministry and mandate. He is Emmanuel (God with us), and Jesus (Saviour). A few decades later, Peter would affirmatively declare before the Sanhedrin that "…There is none other Name under heaven given amongst men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). The Jewish world had long awaited the Messiah with bated breath but, and sadly so, the greater part of the population could not come to terms with the God-incarnate Saviour cradled in the manger surrounded with bleating sheep. That could not stop God's redemptive plan.

Whatever you make of this narrative, it must not be lost on you that Jesus came to save humankind from the grip of sin and its consequences. This also goes with freedom from demonic manipulations and satanic oppression, sickness and destruction. The question is, has the purpose of Christ's incarnation been fulfilled in your life? If not, why not?

VISION FOR MISSION

KEY VERSE: “But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee” (ACTS 26:16).

BIBLE TEXT: ACTS 26:16-19

According to Google’s English Dictionary, vision can be defined as “the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom”, and mission on the other hand, is “the vocation or calling of a religious organization, especially a Christian one, to go out into the world and spread its faith.” In our text, God charged Paul to carry out his missionary mandate at all cost- “But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee” (Acts 26: 16). God was definite about His command to His servant Paul concerning the missionary assignment. Evangelism is the great commission for the church.

Youths should have vision for mission because they are part of the body of Christ whom the Lord is depending on for the end-time harvest. You have to be born again to partner with God before you can accomplish this mission because without Him you can do nothing.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to accomplish my mission.

CHALLENGE: Have vision for mission.

THE TEMPTATION OF JESUS - PART 2

KEY VERSE: “Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.” (MATTHEW 4:7)

BIBLE TEXT: MATTHEW 4:5-7

Satan does not give up easily in the temptations he brings in the way of God's children. Jesus defeated him with the written word in the first temptation, but he did not stop there. Satan knows that Jesus is the Son of the most high God Who has power to defeat him yet he continued with the temptations. As God, Who came in the form of man, Jesus Christ did not seek to be praised for being powerful or possessing the ability to keep Himself safe from harm. He knew that Satan wanted Him to do what he said but Jesus is wiser and more knowledgeable than Satan. He refused to fall for the craftiness of the devil.

As a friend of Jesus, the word of God must dwell richly in your heart. You need it all the time to help you overcome Satan. If Satan was not afraid to tempt Jesus and challenge His faith in God, he can tempt any believer. Satan knows the scriptures but often misapplies them. He uses them to counter God and deceive friends of Jesus who are not strong in the Lord or who do not understand God's word very well. Always ask the Holy Spirit to interpret the word of God to you as you read and meditate on it. Without understanding, you cannot apply it correctly.

Jesus knew the word, in fact, He is the Word so He was not deceived by Satan. Fill your heart with the word of God. Fill your spirit with the boldness of God and let the power of God's word in your life give you victory over every temptation of Satan. Only true friends of Jesus can have true victory. Become one today if you have not yet surrendered your life to Him.

PRAYER: Father, please help me to overcome Satan's temptations through Your word

BLIGHT OF INGRATITUDE

KEY VERSE: "And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger." - (LUKE 17:17,18).

TEXT: LUKE 17:11-19

Ancient Israel had no answer to the scourge of certain diseases, especially the disease of leprosy. Medical science offered little help in combating this dreaded condition, which kept its victims away from decent society. There was no relief except by divine intervention.

Jesus told the ten l***rs: "Go shew yourselves unto the priests". This was because after a l***r was cleansed of the disease, he was to present himself to a priest to be confirmed clean. Now on their way to the priest, they were cleansed.

Overwhelmed by joy at this discovery, one of them turned back and came to Christ to give glory to God. The rest went away with their healing and forgot the Healer. It is good to note that the one who went back was a Samaritan whose nation the Jews regarded as sinful.

The passage teaches us some profound lessons: One, Jesus remains the source of genuine cleansing and perfect healing. Two, believers are under obligation to return thanks to God for all His benefits and blessings. While one l***r was grateful for his healing, the others showed no such appreciation. Their ingratitude pictures how many people often forget all that God bestows upon them both spiritually and physically only to continue to ask for more.

How often do you say: 'Thank you, Jesus'? As it is in the physical, so it is in the spiritual; we must show appreciation for the good people do unto us. An ungrateful 'believer' is a blight to the Christian faith. We need to constantly show appreciation to God for His manifold blessings in our lives! Those who fail to appreciate God's goodness to them or lightly esteem the displayed love of others are not a true representative of the unique identity of Christ who is praise and gratitude personified.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Gratitude is a noble attitude that blesses both ways

HANNAH

KEY VERSE: “And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the Lord, mine horn is exalted in the Lord: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation” (1 SAMUEL 2:1).

BIBLE TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 2:1-10

Hannah is one of the matriarchs of faith in the Bible. Thus, the story of Hannah and how she conceived Samuel is a story of faith, patience and dependence on God. It shows the faithfulness of God in granting the request of His children who are committed to His will and plans. Hannah went through difficult times but remained steadfast and resolute about her dedication to God. She did not allow the situation to control her but was firm.

Beloved, you may be going through some pains now waiting on God, believing him for admission into the higher institution, healing, salvation of family members and so on. The situation may be challenging but if only you can believe just like Hannah did, it is not a time to be distracted. Believe the promises of God and He will grant your heart desires at the right time. Make your waiting time a time of sober reflections on the goodness of God. Read the Bible to learn how others like Hannah overcame their challenges. Remember God has good thoughts towards you.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to wait on You.

CHALLENGE: Be patient like Hannah.

THE TEMPTATION OF JESUS - (PART 1)

KEY VERSE: “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” (MATTHEW 4:4)

BIBLE TEXT: MATTHEW 4:1-4

The temptation of Jesus is not a parable, neither is it just a story in the Bible. It was a real-life experience recorded for us to read and understand that Jesus lived in human form. Jesus Christ was born to save sinners from their sins and reconcile them back to God after the fall of man in the garden of Eden. Satan, who caused the fall of man was not happy about it. He wanted to stop Jesus by bringing temptations His way.

Being tempted is not a sin but falling into the temptation makes someone to become an enemy of God. Satan knew that Jesus had fasted for forty days and forty nights and He was hungry (this shows the human side of Jesus). He tempted Jesus with what He needed most at that particular time (food). That is what Satan does. He looks for a time when you have a particular need and brings an ungodly suggestion to you to meet that need. Jesus did not fall into the temptation because He had the Spirit of God in Him. He also knew the word of God and He used it against Satan.

The word of God is the believer's armour against the wiles of Satan. If Jesus yielded to that temptation, the whole of mankind would have been doomed forever. As a friend of Jesus, walk in the spirit and you will not fulfill the desires of the flesh. Also keep the word of God in your heart so that you can use it when there is need for it. Choose to obey God rather than Satan and God will help you to be victorious over the enemy.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to put my need for spiritual food far above my need for physical food

QUEST FOR REVIVAL

KEY VERSE: "O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy." - (HABAKKUK 3:2).

TEXT: HABAKKUK 3:1-2

Reviewing the history of revivals in Christendom, English author and theologian, Os Guinness, states that these spontaneous supernatural acts occur during turbulent times. Examining the periods of the Christian Reformation, Revival, and Renaissance, he concludes that the darkest hour is often just before the dawn. Consequently, we should always be people of hope and prayer rather than gloom and defeatism. God can turn the situation around in a moment.

The cleric took lessons from the experience of Habakkuk, the prophet who was struck with terror on learning that the land of Judah would be attacked by the fierce Chaldean troops from Babylon. Already disturbed by the iniquities of injustice and impunity around him, on which he expected the Lord to act, Habakkuk was now informed that more disquietude was on the way. The prophet was made to understand that even the Chaldeans, who were to be used as an instrument of punishment, were relieved when he realised that the God of mercy he served was at the point of reviving His people in the process. He went on to intercede for precisely that.

With humanity now also traumatised by sporadic assaults through technological inventions like Artificial Intelligence (AI), wars, insecurity, dysfunctional governance, threats of nuclear conflagration, there are fears that man is on the brink, looking into the bottomless abyss. Really? Not so. The Christian is challenged, rather, like Habakkuk, to plead for revival amid the turmoil. It is the hour to ask for an unprecedented move of God's Spirit in the world, an event that should usher multitudes to repentance and turning to Christ for succour in trying times.

The Lord's second coming is imminent, going by the signs we are witnessing. It is a timely call for vigilant heaven-seeking Christians to strengthen their commitment to holiness, evangelism, word, fellowship, and acts of kindness. We shouldn't be despondent as we observe the events that signal the end-time; instead, we should discern revival on the horizon.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Current global upheavals are not for our anxiety, but for our action
