HONOUR HIS ANOINTED

TEXT: GALATIANS 4:14-18

KEY VERSE: "Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me" (GALATIANS 4:15).

Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court from 1902 to 1932, was once asked why he was not troubled, attending a small church where the preacher was a most ordinary man with no originality as a thinker. Dr. Holmes gave this fine reply: "I go because I have a little plant called Reverence, and I must need water it once a week or it would die."

Apostle Paul corrected the Galatian church for the dissipation of the once flourishing virtue amongst them. They once loved and cherished him, but they no longer manifested the same affection towards him for whatever reason(s). The infiltration of false teachers affected them. They no longer loved and appreciated their mentor and spiritual father. Evil communication had corrupted their good manners. Yet they failed to realise that when we honour God's servants, we honour God. Conversely, dishonouring God's anointed implies dishonour for God.

Ministers of God are His representatives among men, chosen and anointed as shepherds accountable to Him. God anoints them for His unique service, and we are not allowed to dishonour them. David was smitten in the heart when he cut off the fringe of King Saul's skirt. He regretted what he did because Saul was God's anointed. Persecutions and difficulties are no excuses for disobedience. You can always commit your ways to God, the righteous Judge, for mediation and intervention. When believers criticise, speak carelessly, murmur against, or falsely accuse their leaders, they dishonour God's anointed, and He would not be pleased with them. It is even more delicate when we neglect to obey the word of God they teach us.

On the other hand, believers must be weary of false teachers and prophets who creep into fellowship to corrupt gatherings of saints with pernicious words. Their influence can be very damaging. They beguile unstable souls and make merchandise of the innocent and the gullible. We are not to obey, or follow preachers, who show wrong examples, and aim to turn us away from God.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: It is always profitable to give honour to whom honour is due.

MIRIAM'S MARVELLOUS MUSIC

TEXT: EXODUS 15:20-21

MEMORY VERSE: "And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea" (EXODUS 15:21).

Israel had just been delivered at the Red Sea from the scourge of the Egyptians. The Bible says, "And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses." The immediate response of Moses after the Red Sea crossing experience was to compose a song of triumph to celebrate God's power, salvation and faithfulness. In part of this same song, Miriam led her women to sing with timbrels and dancing.

Church history is replete with Christian women who composed music or sang to God's glory. They include: F***y Crosby who sang - "Blessed Assurance," Adelaide Pollard, who penned down, "Have Thine Own Way Lord," and a host of other gospel singers, like Wanda Jackson, and Shirley Caesar. Music also works miracles. Jehoshaphat and the children of Israel were delivered from the Moabites and the Ammonites when they began to sing and praise God, and the Lord ambushed the enemies, and they were smitten. Your miracle is in your mouth through music!

QUOTE: Music also works miracles.

CHALLENGE: Experience miracles as you praise God today.

PRAYER: Lord, I lift up my heart in worship to you.

WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL? 2

TEXT: 3 JOHN 1:9-11

KEY VERSE: "Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God" (3 John 1:11).

A role model is a person who someone admires and whose behaviour is copied. Role models can either be good or bad. Unknown to Doris, she started to talk and exhibit the bad character of her role model - a popular worldly musician she admires and often listens to. Although Diotrephes in our Bible passage was a leader who had influence, he was a bad example. His heart was not right, and he did not walk in truth. Apostle John had to warn friends of Jesus not to copy him.

Who do you admire and have taken as your role model? Good models should be those that are good examples of believers in word, conversation, charity, spirit, faith, and purity (1 Timothy 4:12). Jesus is the true and perfect Role Model. Surrender your heart to Him, love Him, read, meditate on His words, and obey them.

PRAYER: Dear Father, I give my heart to You. Help me to daily love and obey Jesus, and grow to be more like Him.

SATAN'S PLOT; CHRIST'S PRAYER

TEXT: LUKE 22:31-34

KEY VERSE: "And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren" (LUKE 22:31, 32).

In warfare, a common strategy is to capture or kill key leaders on the enemy's side to gain tactical advantage. The killing of Osama bin Laden was a pivotal moment in modern history, marking the end of the decade-long chase for the mastermind behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States. It also crippled and weakened the influence of the Al-Qaeda terrorist group. This kind of strategy also applies in spiritual warfare. The devil targets those he considers key leaders and influential disciples of Christ. Recognising Peter's significant position and relevance in God's plan for the Church, he wanted to destroy Peter's faith and abort God's plan for him. However, Jesus knew Satan's plot; thus, He forewarned Peter, reassuring him of His prayers. Rather than heed Christ's warning, Peter began to boast of his love and loyalty to Christ.

Satan's plot against Peter applies to all believers. He constantly desires to take us down. The devil considers every believer a potential threat to him and his kingdom. Therefore, he tries to get the believer out of favour with God and render him weak and useless such that he can no longer pose a threat to him. Satan uses fierce and bitter opposition or subtle temptations to allure the unsuspecting Christian. But we have the comforting assurance that Jesus is praying for us.

However, Christ's intercession for us does not absolve us of the responsibility of staying on guard always. While we are not to become scared of the devil, we cannot afford to be carefree, careless, presumptuous, or self-confident. We must constantly watch and pray. There is no spiritual level we can attain, or how close to God we can be, that will keep us out of the devil's temptations and plot. Satan does not give up on anyone at all. He does not mind waiting as long as it takes to hunt down a believer. We must, therefore, constantly watch and pray. Take to the counsel of Charlotte Elliott, the hymn writer:

"Gird thy heavenly armour on,
Wear it ever night and day;
Ambushed lies the evil one;
Watch and pray." As long as we keep trusting in the Lord and abide in His words, we can be sure of victory over the devil no matter how long and hard he tries!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Those who keep their watch in prayer will overcome the devil's schemes.

MANAGING ANGER

TEXT: JAMES 1:19-20

MEMORY VERSE: "Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God" (JAMES 1:19-20).

It was Horace who rightly said that, "Anger is a momentary madness, so control your passion or it will control you." Anger is a natural emotional response but it can easily lead to sin if not managed properly. Jesus emphasised the importance of controlling anger when He said, "But I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment" (Matthew 5:22). According to our text, anger emanates from what we hear and say; that is why it calls for a cautious approach in communication; watch your responses.

My friend, anger does not produce the righteousness of God. Remember, unchecked anger can lead to actions that are out of sync with our faith and often results in negative outcomes. Remember Cain who killed Abel. Often, immediate reactions to issues can escalate conflicts or damage relationships, whereas a pause for reflection can lead to more constructive dialogue. Managing anger requires biblical insights and self-control. So, be "swift to hear" and "slow to anger". Aim for God's will in all things.

QUOTE: Be swift to hear and slow anger.

CHALLENGE: Control your emotions to let go of anger.

PRAYER: Lord, please, help me to avoid angry reactions, in Jesus' name.

WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL? - 1

TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 3:17-20

KEY VERSE: "Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an example" (Philippians 3:17).

"No, never; she is not my role model!" Mary responded to a comment made by Kenny, her classmate, who had said that a popular music artist who dressed almost naked was the role model of all the girls in the class. Role models are the people we admire and look up to. They can be our peers, friends, teachers, pastors, celebrities, etc. Samuel did not make the ungodly children of Eli his example, though they lived together. Moses chose to obey and follow God rather than to make Pharaoh who was popular and whom he lived with, his role model.

Sadly, the association of Amnon, the son of king David, with Jonadab, a crafty man, led to his destruction. Jonadab's influence and advice led Amnon to defile Tamar, his half-sister. Remember, evil communication and association corrupt good manners and the future. Choice of role models have an effect on our mind, values, and future. So, just like Mary in the story, you must be wise and carefully choose as role models, only those whose values, characters, and lives are godly.

PRAYER: Dear Father, help me to be wise and only make godly people my role models.

REWARDABLE TURNING POINT

TEXT: JONAH 3:6-10

KEY VERSE: "And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not" (JONAH 3:10).

In his book, Timothy Jennings, a psychiatrist and Christian author, writes of the danger of unrecognised heart conditions: "Hypertension - high blood pressure - has been called the silent killer, but medical professionals didn't always realise this. In fact, some doctors argued that hypertension was a made-up disorder that didn't need to be treated at all". For instance, in 1931 Dr. John J. Hay, a British senior physician proclaimed: "The greatest danger to a man with high blood pressure lies in its discovery, because then some fool is certain to try and reduce it." Tragic results followed from this reckless statement which some experts now argue was taken out of context. Further medical studies later provided better answers that have facilitated the treatment of those conditions.

This applies to the way Jonah's fiery preaching of impending judgment upon sinful Nineveh triggered a change of heart after years of impudence and stonewalling. Nineveh was on God's agenda for severe judgment. That was the case, until the reluctant Prophet Jonah, came with his fiery message of doom. Although Jonah did not provide any panacea that could encourage hope in the Ninevites, nonetheless, they heeded the call of their king, who proclaimed a fast to plead for forgiveness. The response of the king was immediate and decisive: he ordered a national dry fast (no food or water) and charged everyone to "cry mightily to God." He understood that conviction must be followed by confession, prayer for pardon and the forsaking of past sins. His rhetorical question of whether God would pardon should be seen as a sinner's acknowledgement of the depth of his depravity and God's absolute prerogative to forgive sins. It was not the fasting that brought God's forgiveness and mercy, but the genuine repentance.

Living around the precipice of danger, while holding on to a wrong assumption, can be damnable. So also is the careless attitude of dismissing a serious situation without probing further. God expects the sinner to respond to the gospel message, rather than believing all is well because they do not feel any danger in the present. Very important too is the need for us to preach the word of salvation very clearly, so the world can be acquainted with the danger they face. The impact of the Word is the conviction of hearts as seen in the text. No conversion can take place without the proclaimed gospel, which brings conviction and godly sorrow for sins, confession and turning away from sin to the Saviour. In our current dispensation of grace, sinners should not doubt God's willingness to pardon, if they come in the name of Jesus Christ, who shed His blood for mankind. Neither should they doubt God's readiness to judge sinners who refuse to heed His warnings.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: A positive change of mind produces rewardable transformation.

MAKING WRONG RIGHT

TEXT: LUKE 19:5-10

MEMORY VERSE: "And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold" (LUKE 19:8).

"A religion that compels a man to pay his debts, take back the things he has stolen, confess his lies, and uncover his crimes has credibility," says Longie Cunningham. Making wrong right is referred to as "Restitution" which is an act of making amends for wrongs done, restoring stolen things to their rightful owners, paying debts, owning up to frauds committed, and apologising to those we hurt or slandered in order to have a conscience free from offence towards God and man.

Zacchaeus in our text, demonstrates this act of genuine conversion as he is seen promising to restore to others things wrongfully taken. This act makes others to know about the grace of God which can help one to be desirous of making wrong right. Friend, ensure that you have this free conscience, otherwise, seek to mend your ways today by doing your restitution. However, seek counsel from mature believers to handle intricate cases that may implicate others. Is your conscience free? If not, pray to God to help you make your ways right before Him and man.

QUOTE: Seek to mend your ways today.

CHALLENGE: Restitution is a necessity.

PRAYER: Oh God, help me to make my ways right, in Jesus' name. Amen!

PUNISHED FOR REJECTING GOD

TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 10:5-10

KEY VERSE: "But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness" (1 Corinthians 10:5).

Our Bible passage recalls how disappointed God was by the ungodly conduct of many of the children of Israel. God punished them for rejecting Him, the true and living God. They forsook God's righteous way to serve dumb and lifeless idols. God had warned the children of Israel several times about the danger of rejecting His word. They disregarded the warnings and faced the grave consequences of their evil ways. It is a fearful thing to come under God's punishment.

Examine yourself today; is God pleased with you, pleased with what you think in your heart, with the word you speak, pleased with the things you watch with your eyes and wear on your body? Is He pleased with the songs you sing and with the places you go? These are the questions you should always ask yourself in everything you do. There is need for you to repent if your answer to these questions is no! Ask God to forgive and wash your heart clean with the blood of Jesus. Turn away from sin and accept Jesus as your personal Saviour and Lord. Then you will escape the punishment that will come on disobedient children.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I pray that You save and deliver me from the coming judgment.

HIGH PRICE OF REDEMPTION

TEXT: MARK 15:27-32

KEY VERSE: "Save thyself, and come down from the cross" (MARK 15:30).

It was around 1941 when N**i brutality was getting to its height that a Polish Franciscan Priest named Maximilian Kolbe became the symbol of sacrificial death for others during World War II. The inspiring incident happened in the Auschwitz concentration camp, when he voluntarily took the place of a fellow prisoner, Franciszek Gajowniczek, who was condemned to die. Kolbe offered his life so that Gajowniczek, a husband and father, could live. This monumental and inspiring act is now tagged: "The Sacrifice of Maximilian Kolbe (1941)".

Apart from the iconic sacrifice of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Himself, this relatable story has inspired generations of believers and missionaries to consider nothing too precious to give up in order to rescue people from impending damnation. There have been countless number of missionaries that have paid the supreme price in South America, Africa, Asia and elsewhere. Others faced the harshness of the Iron Curtain nations in the Communist era, and confronted other hostile communities in an attempt to share Christ's gospel of redemption.

Kolbe's act of selfless love and sacrifice no doubt mirrors the infinitely greater redemptive love of Christ that believers must model. Of course, the narratives in the New Testament and the actual historical event of His passion, agonising prayer at Gethsemane, betrayal by one of His close disciples, His kangaroo court trials, cruel treatment, mocking and eventual crucifixion, only affirm His sacrificial love for mankind.

It is said that when Jesus was nailed to the cross, our sin was also nailed there. He was punished so that we will be set free from condemnation. He died so that we can live. As prophetically revealed in the Scripture, Christ paid a high price for our salvation. There are a few lessons we need to take away from this meditation. These include our obligation to reciprocate that sacrifice through our unconditional love for Christ and His sheep; our total submission to His perfect will; our commitment to take the gospel message to others, lest His suffering and death at Calvary be a waste in the lives of those who may perish without hearing and receiving the good news.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Christ paid the high price that makes salvation free to all sinners.

LOVING GOD

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 6:4-9

MEMORY VERSE: "And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might" (DEUTERONOMY 6:5).

Love is an abstract theme; it is meaningless unless it is applied in a certain situation to make it real or concrete. Hence William Shakespeare says, "They do not love that do not show their love." We can show our love by some good, helpful and sacrificial actions. "Service and obedience are proofs of love," declared Robert Tilton.

The nation of Israel was special because God chose them and loved them deeply. They were to reciprocate that great love. They were not chosen because they were the most populous race on earth, but because of God's love and promise made to their ancestors (see Deuteronomy 7:7).

God showed His love by rescuing Israel from Egypt with great miracles. In return, He wanted them to love Him only and avoid idolatry. Today, Christians are the spiritual Israel. In love, God redeemed us through Jesus Christ; and He wants us to love Him with all our heart, soul, and strength without sinning. Our love for God should not be merely in words, but in action through service, worship, and total obedience.

QUOTE: Love Him with all our heart.

CHALLENGE: Do your actions show that you truly love God?

PRAYER: Lord, grant me the grace to love and obey you all my life.
