Ash Wednesday: Identity in Christ or Return to Dust?

As New Covenant believers, our identity is not rooted in fallen Adam but in the risen Christ. Scripture declares that we are new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17), citizens of heaven (Philippians 3:20–21), and carriers of resurrection life (Romans 8:11). Our reality is no longer defined by dust, mortality, or condemnation, but by union with the life-giving Spirit.
Ash Wednesday emphasizes human frailty and the words, “Remember you are dust.” While repentance is biblical, the New Covenant does not anchor believers in mortality but in victory. The cross did not merely remind us of death—it triumphed over it. The gospel centers on Christ’s finished work, not continual identification with decay.
Practices that overemphasize fallen humanity without equal emphasis on resurrection identity risk reinforcing a consciousness of sin rather than righteousness. Under grace, repentance flows from sonship—not from fear or self-abasement. We humble ourselves not to gain acceptance, but because we are already accepted in Christ.
The believer’s focus is not the dust of Genesis, but the glory of resurrection. We do not deny repentance; we interpret it through completed redemption.
Our identity is in Christ—not in the dust.
