THE DUST RETURNED TO DUST, AND THE SOUL TO THE CREATOR

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7

The Very Rev. Dr. Festus A. Asana has spread his wings and flown back to his Creator.

The dust has returned to dust. The soul has returned to the One who gave it.

He served the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon faithfully, rising from pastor to become Moderator from 2009 to 2014. Today, the race has ended and the servant has gone to receive his reward.

But there was a powerful scene at his burial that deserves to be remembered.

Under the pouring rain, the Rt Rev Miki Hans Abia, the Moderator of the PCC, trekked alongside others to bury his predecessor.

No comfort of a dry vehicle could erase the moment. No rain could stop the journey.

The Moderator was not simply walking through the mud; he was walking through history.

And somewhere behind him, other pastors were writing their own stories—serving, accompanying, witnessing and leaving footprints that history may one day remember.

It made me ask:

WHAT STORY ARE YOU WRITING TODAY?

The PCC will remember Festus Asana for his stewardship.

I will remember him for his humility.

His family will remember him for his care and love.

Others will remember him for different reasons.

But when our own journeys end, what will people say about us?

Will they remember our titles—or our character?

Our possessions—or our generosity?

Our positions—or the people we lifted?

Every day, we are writing our obituary without knowing the date it will be read.

The rain will eventually stop. The mud will dry. The footsteps will disappear.

But the story we leave behind may remain.

So write your story well.

Serve well. Love well. Forgive. Help someone. Stand for what is right. Leave footprints worth following.

Because one day, like Festus Asana, we too shall leave the stage.

And when the dust returns to dust and the soul returns to the Creator, the only question that will remain is:

WHAT DID YOU DO WITH THE LIFE YOU WERE GIVEN?

🕊️ Rest well, servant of God. Your race is finished. Your story has been written.

Ndi Kevin Ndi.
