Think Bluetooth is just for headphones and car calls?
Think again. It’s one of the sneakiest ways apps track you, and most people have no clue it’s happening.

Even when GPS is off, your phone is constantly “sniffing” for nearby devices like AirTags, smartwatches and fitness trackers. That’s normal.

Here’s where it gets shady: Some apps piggyback on that signal to figure out where you are, how long you stay and who else is around. I’m talking about fitness apps, shopping apps, airline apps, even flashlights and wallpaper apps. (Yep.)

Retail stores can use this data to detect when you walk by or how long you linger near a display. Creepy and totally preventable.

🔧 Take back control
Plenty of popular apps request Bluetooth access, not to connect to a device but to build a profile of where you go and who you’re near. The good news? You can shut it down in seconds.

▶️ On iPhone:

Go to Settings, tap Privacy & Security.

Select Bluetooth.

Look through the list. If an app doesn’t need Bluetooth (think: Uber, Target, games), toggle it off.

▶️ On Android:

Go to Settings.

Select Apps (or Apps & notifications).

Tap See all apps (or the three-dot icon for Permission manager).

Choose an app and tap Permissions.

Check if it has Nearby Devices or Bluetooth access. If it doesn’t need it, hit Deny.

🤯 Why this matters
This has nothing to do with pairing your earbuds. It’s about passive location tracking done without GPS and often without your knowledge.

Even if an app isn’t malicious, this level of data collection adds up. It fuels ad targeting, influences your search results and even shows up in the prices you’re shown online.

If you’re not actively using Bluetooth with an app, it doesn’t need access. You’ll still get your texts, music and podcasts, just without handing out a digital breadcrumb trail.

🔵 Fun facts
Bluetooth is named after a 10th-century Viking king, Harald “Bluetooth” Gormsson, who was known for uniting Denmark and Norway just like Bluetooth tech unites different devices.

King Harald had a dead tooth that looked blue, hence the nickname. When engineers were developing a short-range wireless standard in the ’90s, they used “Bluetooth” as a code name, and it stuck.

Find your mouse pointer on Mac:
If the cursor keeps disappearing, go to System Settings > Accessibility > Display > Pointer. Drag the Pointer size slider to make it larger, and pick new colors for the outline or fill. Bonus: Turn on Shake mouse pointer to locate. Next time you lose it, a quick shake makes the pointer balloon for a second. Amazing.

Add a signature in Gmail:
Go to Settings > See all settings > General > Signature. Click Create new, give it a name and type in details like your contact info and job title. You can also insert an image of your real signature. Then choose whether it appears on new emails, replies or both. Scroll down and hit Save Changes.

Hide Taskbar extras on Windows 11:
Widgets and the Task view button can’t be unpinned like regular apps, but you can still remove them. Right-click an empty spot on the Taskbar, select Taskbar settings, and under Taskbar items, toggle off Task view and Widgets. FYI: You can also hide the Search box from here.

Shipping crackdown:
Amazon’s dialing back some Prime benefits; you’re not allowed to share your Prime free shipping with people unless you live together. From Oct. 1, outsiders must pony up a discounted $14.99/year for the first year, then $14.99/month. Amazon Family still works, but only if everyone’s under the same roof. No more long-distance toothpaste subsidies.

Beep beep, your groceries are here!

Your grocery store just got wheels and zero chill. . . . . . .

Robomart’s new RM5 is basically a driverless Instacart van with climate-controlled lockers and no human in sight. Order from the app, and this electric grocery goblin loads up at the store, rolls to your house and waits patiently like a golden retriever. Tap your phone, and boom, your personal locker pops open like it’s revealing a prize on The Price Is Right.

🛒 It carries up to 500 pounds of food, hits 25 mph, makes multiple stops and doesn’t expect a tip or a thank-you. Just a flat $3 fee, which is less than the service fee Instacart charges to breathe near an avocado.

It’s part fridge, part Uber, part vending machine and 100% what-the-heck.

The future has arrived. And it’s double-parked in front of your house.

WhatsApp’s new Writing Help: Rewrite your messages in different styles to make them sound more professional, funny (think Kim jokes) or supportive. To try it: Tap the icon on the right of the text, then the pencil icon under your message and select the tone you want.

🛠️ Troubleshooting on Windows 11: Running into issues like no sound, no internet or a printer that won’t connect? Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. You’ll see options like Audio, Network & Internet, Printer and more. Click Run next to the one giving you problems, then follow the prompts to diagnose and fix it.

🚗 Play music in older cars: If your ride doesn’t have Android Auto or CarPlay, load your favorite songs onto a USB flash drive. Plug it into your car’s radio, and as long as they’re MP3 or AAC formats, it’ll play right away. No USB port? Grab an adapter that plugs into the cigarette lighter instead.

⚠️ Don’t trust every Play Store app: Harmful ones sometimes sneak past Google’s checks, and one wrong download can infect your phone. Protect yourself: Open the Play Store app, tap your Profile, go to Play Protect > Settings > General, and toggle on Scan apps with Play Protect. It’ll inspect your apps and warn you about risks.

Check your Facebook settings:
The sinister mobile app has quietly turned on two settings that let Meta scan your phone’s entire camera roll. Nice. That means Facebook can look at your photos, even the ones you haven’t uploaded. Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Camera roll sharing suggestions > and Toggle off Custom sharing suggestions from your camera roll and Get camera roll suggestions when you’re browsing Facebook. PSA: Your steps may vary, but these work for most.

How long before your stuff disappears?
For starters, these deadly time-outs mostly apply to free accounts. Paid plans usually buy you more time, but not always. Sometimes you’ll get an email telling you to log in or else, but don’t count on it.

I put together this list for you so you know the dates your account could go into the intergalactic bit bucket.

Google (Gmail, Drive, Photos): Two years of no activity = delete. P**f!

Google Voice: Three months of silence and your number could be reassigned.

Shutterfly: If you don’t make a purchase in 18 months, they can delete your photos.

Dropbox (free accounts): Around 12 months of no activity and your files could disappear.

Yahoo Mail: Account may be deleted after 12 months of no login.

Outlook / Hotmail (Microsoft): You’ve got 24 months before your account is shut down.

AOL Mail: Log in at least once every six months to keep your account alive.

iCloud / Apple ID: Apple’s vague about it, but if your account is inactive for a “prolonged period” (think: years), they can disable or delete it.

LinkedIn: No set timeline, but if you vanish for two or more years, your profile might disappear.

X: Says it releases usernames after 30 days but is sketchy on full deletions.

Snapchat: If you deactivate and don’t come back in 30 days, your account is gone for good.

Instagram: They may delete accounts that go 90+ days without login or engagement, but timelines are vague (think months to years).

Facebook and TikTok: Good news, if you ghost your account, they don’t delete it automatically. Your profile stays alive unless you remove it or break the rules, and then you won’t see the likes of anyone again.

Take one minute, log into that dusty old account and hit send on an email to yourself. Yes, even that backup inbox from 2009 where your only messages are spam and a Chili’s coupon.

👋 Know someone who hasn’t logged into that old Yahoo or Gmail account in a while? Forward this to them. It might save years of photos, emails and digital memories from disappearing into the void. Because if you don’t, p**f, your digital memories could vanish faster than a Zoom invite on a Friday afternoon.

Google gets a slap not a split: Google just dodged a breakup in its big monopoly trial but don’t break out the champagne in Mountain View just yet. A judge says Google can’t keep cutting those sweetheart “default search” deals and has to open up some of its secret search data to rivals. Chrome stays safe, and Google keeps its crown, but this ruling cracks the door for competitors, especially with AI nipping at Google’s heels.

=====================================

Own it? Not really: A new lawsuit says Amazon’s “Buy” button on video downloads is misleading, because what you’re really buying is a long-term rental they can take back anytime. A new California law backs the claim. So if your “purchased” movie vanishes next week, well, that’s legal. Somewhere, your dusty DVD collection is cackling.

Good Morning and Happy Wednesday. . . .
Just a few "News" for today. . . . .

Sad news. Europe’s pulling the plug on those little inked-up souvenirs and going high-tech.

Starting Oct. 12, 2025, when you enter the Schengen Area, you’ll face the new Entry/Exit System (EES), a fancy name for biometric border control. Instead of a stamp and a friendly “bonjour,” you’ll head to a kiosk where your face and fingerprints will be scanned, and your entry digitally logged into a giant EU database.

Yup, it’s basically like checking into the world’s fanciest club, except instead of bottle service, you’re getting your digital identity recorded for up to three years

=======================================

This is important if you’re flying into popular European spots like France, Germany, Italy or Spain after mid-October. You’ll need to build in extra time to make a connecting flight.

You see, under the new system, you’ll need to do the full scan, i.e., passport, face, fingers and all. And here’s the sad kicker: no more passport stamps. That’s right.

Once the system fully rolls out in April 2026, border agents won’t stamp your passport, even if you ask nicely.

Not just in airports:
Planning to take the Eurostar from London to Paris? Driving through the English Channel? Biometric border processing will be there, too.

Even if you’re coming in by ferry from the U.K., you’ll be scanned. The EU isn’t playing around with this digital gatekeeping.

======================================
Back to the States?
While the EU’s going full sci-fi with its border tech, don’t forget the U.S. has its own digital shortcuts, and unlike that guy in line with four carry-ons, these actually help.

Here are the best apps for breezing through U.S. customs like a pro:

Mobile Passport Control (MPC) (Android, iOS)
It’s free, it’s official (from U.S. Customs & Border Protection), and it lets you skip the regular line at many major airports. Just fill out your info in the app, submit when you land and head to the fast lane.

Global Entry app (Android, iOS)
OK, it’s not at every airport, but if you can use it, you’ll cruise through the U.S. checkpoints.

So if you’re traveling this fall, get your passport one last stamp while you still can. True story: I used a publicity shot for my passport photo. Let me tell you, I’m always so relieved when Border Patrol waves me through. 😅

Call now to connect with business.

Apple’s launching the new iPhone 17, Apple Watch and more on Sept. 9.

Don’t trust public Wi-Fi: Scammers can set up “evil twin” networks that look like your coffee shop’s or airport’s Wi-Fi. Once you connect, they can intercept everything you type, from social media logins to credit card info. Always ask staff for the exact network name, and use a VPN to encrypt your internet traffic
