THE VOLUNTARY SURRENDER: Understanding The King's Command of Submitting to One Another
__________________________________

Theme verse:
“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” (Ephesians 5:21, NIV)

MAIN IDEA:
True Christian power is not found in demanding your own way, but in voluntarily laying down your rights for the sake of others—because Jesus did it first.

INTRODUCTION
Think about the last time you were on a crowded bus, a packed train, or even standing in a long line for water, food, or medicine. Everyone is pressing forward. Elbows out. Eyes ahead. Nobody wants to give ground because everyone fears being left behind. Now imagine someone in that crowd—sweaty, tired, holding heavy bags—and instead of shoving past, they step aside. They motion for another person to go first. The crowd might call them foolish. But you? You would never forget them.

That is the kind of radical, unexpected move the Bible is calling us to make—not just in a line, but in every relationship you have.

THE KING'S COMMAND TO SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER:

Notice the command: “Submit to one another.” This is not about slavery or abuse. It’s the Greek word hypotassō—a military term meaning to arrange under a leader. But here, Paul applies it to everyone. Not just wives to husbands, or employees to bosses—but you to the person next to you. Rich or poor, young or old, from Nairobi to New York to Manila.

WHY SUBMISSION OFTEN FEELS IMPOSSIBLE

Why does this feel impossible? Because every human heart, in every village and every city, hears the same whisper: “Look out for yourself. Push forward. Don’t lose your spot.” But Paul inserts the only engine strong enough to drive this behavior: “Out of reverence for Christ.”

JESUS, OUR EXAMPLE OF SUBMISSION

Look at Jesus. He was the King of the universe, yet He didn’t cling to His status. He submitted to the Father, to His earthly parents, to false accusers, and finally to a cross.

Luke 2:51
[51]And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, AND WAS SUBJECT UNTO THEM: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.'' KJV

Philippians 2:7
[7]But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:'' KJV

And that surrender saved the world.

Matthew 26:39
[39]And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: NEVERTHELESS NOT AS I WILL, BUT AS THOU WILT.

Notice the last words in the verse above. That's what a yielded soul does. He submitted to the father and the result was the salvation to all humanity

SELFLESSNESS IN RELATIONSHIPS

When you submit to a spouse’s need, a neighbor’s request, or even a stranger’s turn in line—not because they deserve it, but because you reverence Christ—you are doing the most powerful thing on earth. You are breaking the global cycle of SELFISHNESS. You are proving that your worth does not come from being first, but from following the One who made Himself last.

CONCLUSION WITH APPLICATION POINTS:
The world sees submission as weakness. Heaven sees it as the only strength that builds families, communities, and a life that truly matters.

When the moment to resist doing the word comes to you, quickly recall these words.

1 Peter 5:5
[5]Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.'

This week, take three actions that anyone, anywhere can do:

1. The First Move: Don’t wait for the other person to bend. In your next argument or disagreement, be the first to say, “You may be right. Let’s do it your way.” Watch how tension melts.

2. The Small Surrender: Today, in any crowded place—a market, a bus stop, a doorway—let someone go ahead of you. Do it silently. Do it as an offering to Christ, not for applause.

3. The Heart Check: Tonight, before you sleep, ask yourself: “Where did I demand my rights today? Where could I have stepped aside?” Then tomorrow, step aside.

DO THE WORD
GOD BLESS YOU
