The Seeker of Knowledge
Know, O seeker of knowledge, that you stand at one of the great gates of Paradise, but the path is fraught with trials and tribulations. Therefore, you must adhere to the following:
1. Sincerity, first and foremost: Make your intention purely for the sake of God Almighty, not for fame, position, or argument. Whoever is sincere to God, God will teach him, and whoever seeks worldly gain through his actions, God will deprive him of the Hereafter. Sincerity is the secret to the acceptance and blessing of knowledge, along with its application.
2. Knowledge for action, not just words: Do not be a mere bearer of books while neglecting action. The greatest knowledge is that which impacts your heart, and your heart is reflected in your actions. Whoever learns, acts upon his knowledge, and teaches it will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.
3. Manners before knowledge: Acquire good manners from your teachers before acquiring knowledge from them. Be humble, patient with harshness, and respect those who are more knowledgeable than you. Whoever does not discipline himself will not benefit from his knowledge.
4. Direct learning from its rightful sources: Do not rely solely on the internet and books. Living in the company of a learned scholar is far greater than solitary reading. Knowledge is light, transmitted through the heart before it is written on paper.
5. Diligence, Mastery, and Gradualism: Do not seek everything at once. Master the fundamentals before the branches, the texts before the commentaries, and memorization before deep understanding. A little done well is better than much done haphazardly.
6. Supplication, Night Prayer, and Tears: Make night prayer your weapon, and supplication in the pre-dawn hours your fuel. "O Allah, teach me what benefits me, and benefit me with what You have taught me, and increase me in knowledge"—repeat this sincerely with tears.
7. Beware of the three trials: the trial of self-admiration, the trial of criticizing scholars, and the trial of engaging in disputes before one has mastered the subject.
May Allah bless you.
