Well, the first you will have noticed is that the early church was a baptised community. Baptism is our badge of membership. Baptism is the act of becoming part of church. And I don't know if you've stopped to reflect on quite how profound that is as a thing — that you are here, your qualification for being part of church is not that you're good enough or important enough, but that you are forgiven.

Scripture tells us that we will go through storms in this life. It is inevitable, and some of them will be very hard. But no matter what you face, you do not need to be afraid. Hold your head up high. Keep doing those foundational things which keep you in the right course. As scripture says, "Let us not become weary in doing what is good, for at the right time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

He doesn't wait for them to find courage. He comes right into the middle of their fear, our fear, and says, peace be with you. And that tells us something important — that Jesus doesn't wait for us to get our lives together, to get everything sorted, to be brave and courageous. He doesn't do that. He meets us right in the middle of our mess, and that's why I love this story.

Our guest preacher this Sunday is Revd Paul Cowley MBE.

Paul will be preaching at Evening Worship on Sunday 12 April at 5:30 PM — in person at St.Peter's or live on YouTube.

Paul's journey has taken him from a Manchester borstal at 15, through 17 years in the British Army including service in the Falklands, into the Church of England where he was ordained priest in 2002. He founded the charity Caring for Ex-Offenders in 2005, pioneered the Alpha course in prisons and the Armed Forces, and received the MBE in 2016 for services to ex-offenders. Today he is Director of Rehabilitation at Iceland Foods and Managing Director of the Second Chance Partnership, which encourages businesses across the UK to employ people leaving prison.

All are welcome.

This encounter occurs outside the city, on the wilderness road, on a journey. We are reminded that we may walk away from God, but we are never beyond his reach. And this figure comes alongside them and says, what are you discussing while you are walking along? Despite their despair and their disappointment, they are still talking about what happened, still trying to make sense of it. Despair is never quite final while you are still talking about it. Often our doubts and our fears mean that we don't talk about it because we're a little bit ashamed or we think there are no answers. And then faith ossifies and becomes brittle. But no. These disciples, they talk with one another. And we should do the same in our struggles. Find people that we trust and talk and question and wrestle with things.

In a world gripped by a crisis of loneliness, the story of Zacchaeus reminds us that no amount of wealth or success can fill the gap left by isolation.

Jesus saw past the money and the reputation. He saw someone who was lost — and someone worth redeeming.

"We are more lost than we realise. And we are more loved than we can imagine."

From Sunday's sermon on Luke 19:1-10.

Luke 18:22-24

"When Jesus heard this, he said to him, 'You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.' When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. Jesus looked at him and said, 'How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!'"

Stuff was never what life is about. As the apostle Paul puts it to Timothy, godliness with contentment is great gain. We brought nothing into the world and we can take nothing out of it. So don't make the mistake of investing your life in wealth and possessions that you can't take with you. That offer you false security. That will only ultimately disappoint you. Because they are not the answer. Can I propose to you an alternative get-rich plan?

You want to be truly rich in this life and in the next? Give yourself away. To God and to other people. In generosity and love. Dedicate yourself to prayer. Simplicity. In service. If you have some wealth, use it to do the best good that you can. But discover that the true richness of life is found in relationships with God and with other people. And that there is no greater status than being a child of God. As a child of God, the earth is yours and everything in it.

The rich ruler said, what must I do? I'll tell you what you need to do. Just come. Like a child. Day by day. In love and faith. And you will discover that that life which God gives is a gift. Given one day at a time.

Whatever type of Christian you are, you need to become more. You should be growing and learning from others. We need to be shaken out of that which is comfortable. Challenged to a bigger vision of God. And a deeper understanding of who he is. We need to seek the presence of God in wild places. That which will sustain and envision us when we're going through the hard times. We need that intimacy with Christ which is the very foundation of who we are. God has so much more for you. You are called to be pilgrims into eternity. And that's a journey which starts now.
