Practising Anabaptism

Anabaptism is finding expression in churches far beyond traditional Mennonite institutions. What does this look like? How might the Mennonite Church in Canada respond?

During July and August, Windsor Mennonite Fellowship celebrates their annual church-wide Summer of Sabbath. In other words, regular Sunday morning services at Windsor Mennonite Fellowship are paused until September.

Our church is not closed, we just change form.
The Church (the body of Jesus in the life of the world)
is still open, active, and serving together.

In lieu of Sunday morning,
we are hosting backyard parties, potlucks, concerts,
workshops, and various community events.

Hey WMF Friends & Family,

Join us this Sunday as Titus leads the Sunday discussion on the topic of "On Being Peacemakers."

Titus has provided the following blurb:

In today’s service, we want to reflect together on the Anabaptist peace tradition. Nate helpfully reminded us the other Sunday of the core values of the Anabaptist peace church, namely Jesus, community, reconciliation. Jesus’s “incarnation” and his starting of God’s rule among us has been described as the “eruption of Shalom.” Shalom is the multi-dimensional Hebrew understanding of peace on all levels. Fittingly, the angel choir sings of “peace on earth” at Jesus’s birth (Luke 2).

And so, Anabaptist peace practice is a holistic way of living based on the teachings of Jesus, emphasizing active nonviolence, conflict resolution [and/or conflict transformation], and community. It rejects violence in all forms—including war, personal hostility, and systemic oppression—and replaces it with active, creative, and reconciling love.

Now, if “peacemaking is essential to Christian discipleship,” as Brethren, Friends (Quaker), Mennonite, and FoR authors contend, What would this mean for the inter-cultural life of the church in today’s world?

What conflict situations in your neighborhood or city are you seeing?

How could you or your church serve as a peacemaker in that conflict?

Have you witnessed peacemaking that you can share?

How does Galatians 3:26-28 relate to identity and peace in Jesus’s disciple community?

David Holcomb, a member of our church, shared the following reflection on Anabaptism:

"I have been at WMF for less than a year and a part of Mennonite churches for just over a decade. Over this decade, I have come to appreciate the ways that the Spirit has worked through this relatively small faith community, Through those who have come before us, seeds have been planted that have produced far more than might have been anticipated. I am grateful for these ancestors in the faith who trusted Jesus, bearing witness to his great love for all people. Below are a few ways I see this impact. (I wish I were more aware of how the Spirit is working through Anabaptists beyond North America; this is an area of learning for me in the next decade.) Whether these areas are new to you or not, I hope you will be encouraged as you consider some of these stories.

Conscientious Objection to War: As one of the historic peace churches, Mennonites have played a crucial role in the development and spread of conscientious objection (CO) in North America and beyond.

Voluntary Service: Following World War II, Mennonite Central Committee created the Pax Program as a voluntary service program (alternative service to the military draft in the US) to assist in the rebuilding efforts in Europe following the war. The program continued until 1975.

Fair Trade. In 1946, Edna Ruth Byler (a Mennonite from Pennsylvania) took the initiative to assist impoverished women in Puerto Rico. Out of this grew Ten Thousand Villages, which was one of the early pioneers of the Fair Trade movement.

Restorative Justice: Restorative justice has roots in Indigenous communities in North America (and other continents). The birth of modern restorative justice practices is often located in the 1970s in Kitchener-Waterloo when Mennonite Central Committee worked with a local probation officer to develop a victim-offender reconciliation program.

Conflict Resolution / Transformation: Especially since World War II, there has been a growing movement around conflict resolution beyond the individual level, from groups to nation-states. In this area, Mennonites have also been deeply involved.

May we continue this history of bearing witness to the love of God here in Windsor."

Blessed Holy Week Everyone!

Here's a few announcements heading into the weekend.

Titus will be leading the conversation this Sunday for Easter 10am at 1709 George Ave. We look forward to hearing what everyone has to share. The service will end with communion together.

Windsor Mennonite will be joining with Trinity Lutheran at their church (1215 Parent Ave) for a joint Good Friday service at 10am. Parking is on the street only.

A PRAYER FOR ADVENT

"May the sounds of Advent stir a longing in your people, O God.
Come again to set us free from the dullness of routine and the poverty of our imaginations. Break the patterns which bind us to small commitments and to the stale answers we have given to questions of no importance. Let the Advent trumpet blow, let the walls of our defences crumble, and make a place in our lives for the freshness of your love, well-lived in the Spirit, and still given to all who know their need and dare receive it."

The sacred season of Advent has begun.

September 30th is National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. WMF joins others in lamenting, repenting, commemorating, and working together for a just community, where genocidal systems like residential schools never happen again.

It is important to repudiate the lies, myths, minimizations, and untruths about the residential school system in Canada- untruths which are sometimes even perpetuated through churches. Below are slides addressing some of these myths. (from the Canadian Museum for Human Rights: IG: .ca)

As followers of Jesus, we have a sacred responsibility to walk in humble right-relationship with our Indigenous neighbours, especially when our churches have historically been complicit in these evil systems.

We call on ALL local churches to publicly lament, repent, repudiate the doctrine of discovery, and join us in following the 94 Calls to Action developed by the TRC.
