Dear brothers and sisters,

We sincerely greet you all on this blessed and joyful feast of the Nativity of our Most Holy Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary!

Today, the Holy Church rejoices in the birth of the One through Whom our Saviour Jesus Christ came into the world. The Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos marks the beginning of God’s great work of our salvation, as the Lord gave humanity the One who would become the Mother of our Saviour and the intercessor for the whole Christian world.

May the Most Holy Theotokos, through Her prayers, protect each of us, our families, and our loved ones. May She intercede before Her Son for peace in Ukraine, protection for our soldiers, healing for those who are ill, comfort for those who suffer, and spiritual strength for us all.

May God help us to follow the example of the humility, purity, love, and faith of the Most Holy Theotokos and to remain faithful to Christ throughout our lives.

The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost
The Miracle of the Holy Archangel Michael at Chonae

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Dear brothers and sisters,

When we speak about our church, we often think first about the building: the walls, the dome, the cross, the icons, and the altar. We come here, we pray, we light candles, we take part in the Divine Services, and then we return home.

But the Church teaches us to look at the church in a very different way.

The church is a place where God is especially present among us.

And so an important question arises: Who protects the church? Who keeps it safe from every evil?

Of course, first of all, the Lord Himself protects His Church. No human power can compare with the power of God. But the Lord also gives His saints a special ministry — to pray for us and to intercede for us before Him.

Therefore, every church dedicated to the Lord, to the Mother of God, or to a particular saint has its own heavenly protector.

And especially in the life of the Church, we see that the saint in whose honor a church is dedicated is not simply a name given to the church. He is our heavenly intercessor before God.

But there is one very important thing we must understand.

We cannot think that it is enough simply to have an icon of a saint in the church or to write his name above the entrance, and then the saint will automatically protect us from everything.

No.

If we want to remain under God's protection and under the prayers of our heavenly protector, we ourselves must live a life in the Church.

Where there is prayer, where people repent of their sins, go to confession, receive Holy Communion, and where the Divine Services are celebrated — where people do not simply come to church but truly live their faith — there the church becomes a true spiritual home.

And one thing is especially important — love among Christians.

We cannot ask God to protect us while at the same time destroying the unity of the Church through hatred, hostility, hurt feelings, constant arguments, and division.

The Lord calls us to be one body in Christ.

And this is exactly what today's feast reminds us of — the Miracle of the Holy Archangel Michael at Chonae.

Long ago, in the ancient city of Colossae, which later became known as Chonae, there was a church dedicated to the Holy Archangel Michael, and there was also a holy spring.

According to the tradition of the Church, this place became the site of a great miracle of God.

A pagan man saw his daughter healed by the water of this spring. He came to believe in Christ and built a church in honor of the Holy Archangel Michael. People began coming to this place with faith and receiving God's help.

But the enemy of human salvation could not quietly accept this holy place.

The pagans decided to destroy the church. They directed the waters of two rivers toward the church so that the powerful flood would destroy it together with the holy spring.

We can imagine what the people there must have felt.

In front of them was the enormous power of the water.

Behind them was the church.

And there was no human way to stop the flood.

But God's church was not abandoned.

The Archangel Michael appeared and, striking the rock with his staff, opened a great crack in it. The waters that had been directed toward the church disappeared into this opening and went underground.

And the church was saved.

That is why this place received the name Chonae, meaning a place where the waters went down into the earth.

And to this day, the Church remembers this event as a great miracle of God's power through the Holy Archangel Michael.

But, brothers and sisters, why does the Church tell us about this miracle so many centuries later?

Not simply so that we can know about a story that happened a very long time ago.

The Church wants us to see the spiritual meaning of this miracle.

The waters were coming toward the church and could have destroyed it.

But the Lord did not allow it.

And today, every church also has its own “floods” that can come against it.

Sometimes they are outside difficulties.

Sometimes financial problems.

Sometimes sickness.

Sometimes circumstances that seem stronger than we are.

But very often, the greatest danger does not come from outside.

The greatest danger to a church can come from within.

It comes when prayer disappears from the church.

When people stop going to confession.

When they stop receiving Holy Communion.

When the Divine Services become something secondary in our lives.

When everyone starts thinking only about himself.

When jealousy, hurt, anger, division, and hatred appear among Christians.

Then the walls of the church may still be standing.

The dome may still shine.

The candles may still be burning.

But the spiritual life of the church begins to suffer.

And this is where today's feast speaks directly to every one of us.

Do we want the Lord to protect our church?

Then, first of all, we ourselves must take care of it.

Not only its walls.

Not only its roof.

Not only its icons.

We must protect the spiritual life of the church.

Dear brothers and sisters,

If we want our church to continue to exist and to be passed on to the next generation, there are several very important things we must do.

First — we must pray more.

There should always be prayer in our church.

We should strive to celebrate the full yearly and daily cycle of Divine Services as much as possible. The church should be alive not only on Sundays, but throughout the week, on feast days, during the fasts, and on the days when we remember the saints.

Because without prayer, a church can slowly become only a building.

Second — we need more repentance.

We need to come to confession more often. Not only when we are preparing for Holy Communion, but because we understand that without repentance, our souls slowly move away from God.

Third — we need to receive the Holy Mysteries of Christ more often.

The Eucharist is at the heart of the life of the Church. We do not come here simply to watch a service. We come here to meet Christ and to receive Him in Holy Communion.

And fourth — we must keep brotherly and sisterly love.

This is especially important.

We can repair the roof.

We can paint the walls.

We can put up a new cross.

We can make a beautiful iconostasis.

But if there is no love among us, no outward beauty can make the church truly strong.

Therefore, we need less division and more love.

Less judgment and more prayer for one another.

Less resentment and more forgiveness.

Less desire to prove that we are right, and more desire to keep peace.

Because the Church of God is not built only of stone.

It is built of living people.

And every one of us is part of this spiritual home.

Today we look to the Holy Archangel Michael and remember how the Lord preserved the church at Chonae.

Let this miracle be for us not simply a beautiful story from the distant past.

Let it be a reminder to every one of us:

The Lord can preserve His Church.

The Lord can stop what seems impossible for us to stop.

The Lord can protect His Church.

But we must also be faithful guardians of what God has entrusted to us.

Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, let us take care of our church.

Let us protect it through prayer.

Let us protect it through the Divine Services.

Let us protect it through repentance and confession.

Let us protect it through participation in the Holy Mysteries of Christ.

Let us protect it through love for one another.

And let there be less division, less hatred, and fewer hurt feelings among us — and more love, more prayer, more forgiveness, and more unity.

Then we will be able to pass our church on to our children and grandchildren — not simply as a building, but as a living house of God, where prayer is offered, where people repent, where they receive the Holy Mysteries of Christ, where they love one another, and where together they walk toward Christ.

And when new trials come, we should not be afraid.

For our hope is not in human strength.

Our hope is in God.

And just as the Lord once preserved the church at Chonae through the Holy Archangel Michael from the destructive waters, so today let us ask the Lord to preserve our churches, our parish community, and each one of us from every visible and invisible enemy.

Holy Archangel Michael, pray to God for us and protect this holy church and all of us from every evil!

Amen.

Дорогі брати і сестри!

Коли ми говоримо про храм, ми часто думаємо насамперед про будівлю: про стіни, купол, хрест, ікони, престол. Ми приходимо сюди, молимося, ставимо свічки, беремо участь у богослужінні, а потім повертаємося додому.

Але Церква навчає нас дивитися на храм зовсім інакше.

Храм — це місце особливої присутності Бога серед нас.

І тому виникає важливе питання: Хто захищає храм? Хто оберігає його від усякого зла?

Звичайно, насамперед храм захищає Сам Господь. Ніяка людська сила не може зрівнятися із силою Божою. Але Господь дає Своїм святим особливе служіння — бути нашими молитвениками і заступниками перед Ним.

Тому кожен храм, який присвячений Господу, Божій Матері або певному святому, має свого небесного покровителя.

І особливо в житті Церкви ми бачимо, що святий, на честь якого освячений храм, — це не просто ім’я, дане храму. Він є нашим небесним заступником перед Богом.

Але тут ми повинні зрозуміти одну дуже важливу річ.

Ми не можемо думати, що достатньо просто поставити в храмі ікону святого або написати його ім’я над входом — і тоді святий автоматично захищатиме нас від усього.

Ні.

Якщо ми хочемо залишатися під Божим захистом і під молитовним покровом нашого небесного покровителя, ми самі повинні жити церковним життям.

Там, де є молитва, де люди каються у своїх гріхах, сповідаються, причащаються Святих Христових Таїн, де звершується богослужіння, де люди не просто приходять до храму, але справді живуть своєю вірою, — там храм стає справжнім духовним домом.

І особливо важливо — любов між християнами.

Ми не можемо просити Бога, щоб Він захищав нас, і водночас своїми руками руйнувати єдність Церкви через ненависть, ворожнечу, образи, постійні суперечки та розділення.

Господь закликає нас бути єдиним тілом у Христі.

І саме про це нагадує нам сьогоднішнє свято — Чудо святого Архістратига Михаїла в Хонах.

Давно, у стародавньому місті Колосах, яке згодом стало називатися Хони, знаходився храм, присвячений святому Архістратигу Михаїлу, та святе джерело.

За переданням, саме це місце стало свідком великого Божого чуда.

Одна язичницька людина, побачивши зцілення своєї дочки водою цього джерела, увірувала в Христа і побудувала храм на честь святого Архістратига Михаїла. До цього місця почали приходити люди з вірою і отримувати Божу допомогу.

Але ворог людського спасіння не міг спокійно дивитися на це святе місце.

Язичники вирішили знищити храм. Вони спрямували води двох річок просто на храм, щоб сильний потік води зруйнував його разом зі святим джерелом.

Можемо уявити, що відчували люди, які там знаходилися.

Перед ними була величезна сила води.

Позаду них — храм.

І людськими силами зупинити цей потік було неможливо.

Але Божий храм не був залишений.

З’явився Архістратиг Михаїл і, ударивши своїм жезлом по скелі, відкрив у ній велику тріщину. Води, які були спрямовані на храм, зникли у цій розколині та пішли під землю.

І храм був спасений.

Саме тому це місце отримало назву Хони, тобто місце, де води ніби провалилися в землю.

І Церква до сьогодні згадує цю подію як велике чудо Божої сили, звершене через святого Архістратига Михаїла.

Але, брати і сестри, чому Церква розповідає нам про це чудо через багато століть?

Не просто для того, щоб ми знали історію, яка сталася дуже давно.

Церква хоче, щоб ми побачили в цьому чуді духовний зміст.

Води йшли на храм і могли його знищити.

Але Господь не допустив цього.

І сьогодні кожен храм також має свої «потоки води», які можуть іти проти нього.

Іноді це зовнішні труднощі.

Іноді фінансові проблеми.

Іноді хвороби.

Іноді обставини, які здаються сильнішими за нас.

Але дуже часто найбільша небезпека приходить не ззовні.

Найбільша небезпека для храму може прийти зсередини.

Вона приходить тоді, коли з храму зникає молитва.

Коли люди перестають сповідатися.

Коли перестають причащатися.

Коли богослужіння стає для нас чимось другорядним.

Коли кожен починає думати тільки про себе.

Коли між християнами з’являються заздрість, образи, гнів, розділення та ненависть.

Тоді стіни храму можуть стояти.

Купол може сяяти.

Свічки можуть горіти.

Але духовне життя храму починає руйнуватися.

І саме тут сьогоднішнє свято звертається безпосередньо до кожного з нас.

Чи хочемо ми, щоб Господь захищав наш храм?

Тоді насамперед ми самі повинні його берегти.

Не тільки його стіни.

Не тільки його дах.

Не тільки його ікони.

Ми повинні берегти духовне життя храму.

Дорогі брати і сестри!

Якщо ми хочемо, щоб наш храм існував і був переданий наступному поколінню, ми повинні робити кілька дуже важливих речей.

По-перше — ми повинні більше молитися.

У храмі повинна постійно звучати молитва.

Тому ми повинні прагнути звершувати повний річний і добовий цикл богослужінь настільки, наскільки це можливо. Храм повинен жити не тільки в неділю, але й протягом тижня, у святкові дні, під час постів і в дні пам’яті святих.

Бо без молитви храм поступово може перетворитися лише на будівлю.

По-друге — нам потрібно більше покаяння.

Нам потрібно частіше приходити до сповіді. Не тільки тоді, коли ми готуємося до Святого Причастя, але тому, що розуміємо: без покаяння наша душа віддаляється від Бога.

По-третє — нам потрібно частіше приступати до Святих Христових Таїн.

Євхаристія є серцем життя Церкви. Ми приходимо сюди не просто для того, щоб подивитися на богослужіння. Ми приходимо сюди, щоб зустріти Христа і прийняти Його у Святому Причасті.

І по-четверте — ми повинні зберігати братню і сестринську любов.

Це особливо важливо.

Ми можемо відремонтувати дах.

Можемо пофарбувати стіни.

Можемо встановити новий хрест.

Можемо зробити прекрасний іконостас.

Але якщо між нами немає любові, ніяка зовнішня краса не зробить храм по-справжньому міцним.

Тому нам потрібно менше розділення і більше любові.

Менше осудження і більше молитви один за одного.

Менше образ і більше прощення.

Менше бажання довести, що саме ми праві, і більше бажання зберегти мир.

Бо Церква Божа будується не тільки з каменю.

Вона будується з живих людей.

І кожен із нас є частиною цього духовного дому.

Сьогодні ми дивимося на святого Архістратига Михаїла і згадуємо, як Господь зберіг храм у Хонах.

І нехай це чудо буде для нас не просто красивою історією з далекого минулого.

Нехай воно стане нагадуванням для кожного з нас:

Господь може зберегти Свою Церкву.

Господь може зупинити те, що для нас здається нездоланним.

Господь може захистити Свій храм.

Але й ми повинні бути вірними хранителями того, що Бог нам довірив.

Тому, дорогі брати і сестри, бережімо наш храм.

Бережімо його молитвою.

Бережімо його богослужінням.

Бережімо його покаянням і сповіддю.

Бережімо його участю у Святих Христових Таїнствах.

Бережімо його любов’ю один до одного.

І нехай буде в нас менше розділення, менше ненависті, менше образ, а більше любові, молитви, прощення і єдності.

І тоді ми зможемо передати наш храм нашим дітям і онукам — не просто як будівлю, але як живий Божий дім, де звершується молитва, де люди каються, де приймають Святі Христові Таїнства, де люблять один одного і разом ідуть до Христа.

І коли прийдуть нові випробування, ми не повинні боятися.

Бо наша надія не в людській силі.

Наша надія — у Бозі.

І так само, як Господь колись через святого Архістратига Михаїла зберіг храм у Хонах від нищівних вод, так і сьогодні просімо Господа, щоб Він зберіг наші храми, нашу парафіяльну громаду і кожного з нас від усякого видимого і невидимого ворога.

Святий Архістратиже Михаїле, моли Бога за нас і захищай цей святий храм та всіх нас від усякого зла!
