All Saints of the Land of Ukraine — Our Heavenly Family

Sermon for the Sunday of All Saints of the Land of Ukraine

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,
Last Sunday we celebrated the feast of All Saints, honoring all those who have pleased God throughout the ages. We remembered the prophets and apostles, martyrs and hierarchs, monastics and righteous men and women from every nation and every generation. Today, however, the Holy Church directs our attention to those saints who are especially close to our hearts — the Saints of the Land of Ukraine.

This feast is special because we are not simply remembering great figures from history. We are remembering our own spiritual fathers and mothers. We are remembering those who walked upon the same land as we did, gazed upon the same skies, prayed in the same faith, and endured the same joys and sorrows of human life. They were people just like us. They worked, raised families, faced temptations, suffered hardships, and carried their crosses. Yet through all the trials of life, they remained faithful to Christ.

When we speak of the Saints of the Land of Ukraine, we naturally think of Saint Olga, Equal-to-the-Apostles, Saint Volodymyr, Equal-to-the-Apostles, the holy Fathers of the Kyiv Caves Lavra, the hierarchs, martyrs, confessors, and countless righteous souls who preserved the Orthodox Faith throughout centuries of struggle and sacrifice. Yet today's feast is much greater than a remembrance of famous names alone. For today we honor not only those saints whose names are written in our calendars, but also the countless saints whose names are known only to God.

Among them may be our great-grandparents who faithfully passed the faith on to their children. Among them may be humble village priests who served God faithfully for decades without seeking recognition or praise. Among them may be monks and nuns who spent their lives praying for the world in silence. Among them may even be people whom we personally knew.

Who can say? Perhaps among the saints we honor today are parishioners who once stood beside us in church. People with whom we worshipped, celebrated, and worked for the glory of God. Perhaps among them are priests who once stood before the Holy Altar, offered the Divine Liturgy, baptized children, blessed marriages, comforted the suffering, and committed the departed to God's mercy. The world may no longer remember their names, but God remembers every one of them.
And this is one of the greatest joys of today's feast.

Today we are reminded that the Church is far greater than the walls of any building and far greater than those who are physically present here today. The Church of Christ embraces both heaven and earth. It unites those who lived centuries ago, those who worship today, and those who have already entered eternal life. In Christ, they remain our family.
For this reason, today's feast is a feast of hope.

When we look at the Saints of the Land of Ukraine, we do not see distant heroes beyond our reach. We see people who walked the same path that lies before us. They knew fear, doubt, loss, and suffering. Yet they trusted God, and through His grace they attained holiness.

Today the saints seem to speak directly to our hearts: Do not be afraid to follow Christ. Do not be afraid to remain faithful when faithfulness is difficult. Do not be afraid to pray, to forgive, to love, and to do good. The path to holiness remains open to every Christian.

Therefore, on this holy day, let us give thanks to God for blessing our land with such a great cloud of witnesses. Let us thank Him for those who preserved the Orthodox Faith through generations, handed it down to our parents, and through them to us.

And let us turn to them with love, gratitude, and hope, saying:

All Saints of the Land of Ukraine, our heavenly fathers and mothers, pray to God for us, for our families, for our Church, for our people, and for our homeland. Intercede before the Lord for Ukraine in this time of suffering and trial. Ask Him to strengthen those who defend her freedom, to protect the innocent, to comfort the grieving, to heal the wounded, and to deliver our people from the great calamity that has come upon our land. May God grant an end to violence, injustice, and destruction. May He preserve Ukraine in faith, truth, and righteousness, and bless her with a just and lasting peace, so that our people may once again live in freedom, dignity, and devotion to Christ. And may He grant that we, together with all the saints, may one day glorify the Holy Trinity in His Heavenly Kingdom.
Amen.

Усі святі землі Української — наша небесна родина

Проповідь у Неділю всіх святих землі Української

В ім'я Отця, і Сина, і Святого Духа.
Дорогі брати і сестри у Христі!

Минулої неділі ми святкували пам'ять усіх святих, які від віку угодили Богові. Ми згадували пророків і апостолів, мучеників і святителів, преподобних і праведників усіх народів і всіх поколінь. А сьогодні Свята Церква звертає наш погляд на тих святих, які є особливо близькими нашому серцю — на всіх святих землі Української.

Це свято є особливим тому, що ми згадуємо не просто великих людей минулого. Ми згадуємо наших духовних батьків і матерів. Ми згадуємо тих, хто жив на нашій землі, дивився на те саме небо, молився з тією ж самаю вірою, тією ж самою мовою і переживав ті самі радості та скорботи людського життя. Вони були такими ж людьми, як і ми. Вони працювали, виховували дітей, боролися зі спокусами, переносили труднощі та несли свій життєвий хрест. Але серед усіх випробувань вони зберегли найголовніше — вірність Христові.

Коли ми говоримо про святих землі Української, перед нами постають великі постаті нашої церковної історії: свята рівноапостольна княгиня Ольга, святий рівноапостольний князь Володимир, преподобні отці Києво-Печерські, святителі, мученики, сповідники та незліченна кількість праведників, які зберегли Православну віру серед століть боротьби та випробувань. Але сьогоднішнє свято значно ширше за згадку лише відомих імен. Адже сьогодні ми вшановуємо не тільки тих святих, чиї імена записані в церковному календарі, але й усіх тих, чиї імена відомі лише Богові.
Серед них можуть бути наші прадіди й прабабусі, які передали віру своїм дітям. Серед них можуть бути прості сільські священики, які десятиліттями вірно служили Богові, не шукаючи ні слави, ні людської похвали. Серед них можуть бути монахи та монахині, які все своє життя присвятили молитві за світ. А можливо, серед них є й люди, яких ми особисто знали.

Хто знає? Можливо, серед святих, яких ми сьогодні прославляємо, є й ті парафіяни, які колись стояли поруч із нами у храмі. Люди, з якими ми разом молилися, святкували та трудилися для слави Божої. Можливо, серед них є священики, які колись стояли перед Святим Престолом, звершували Божественну Літургію, хрестили дітей, благословляли подружжя, розраджували стражденних і проводжали спочилих у вічність. Світ може вже не пам'ятати їхніх імен, але Господь пам'ятає кожного.

І саме в цьому полягає одна з найбільших радостей сьогоднішнього свята.
Сьогодні ми знову усвідомлюємо, що Церква набагато більша, ніж стіни будь-якого храму, і набагато більша, ніж ті люди, які сьогодні стоять поруч із нами на молитві. Церква Христова об'єднує небо і землю. Вона об'єднує тих, хто жив сотні років тому і тих, хто живе сьогодні. У Христі всі вони залишаються нашою родиною.
Саме тому сьогоднішнє свято є святом великої надії.

Коли ми дивимося на святих землі Української, ми бачимо не недосяжних героїв, а людей, які пройшли той самий шлях, який лежить перед нами. Вони також знали страх, сумніви, втрати й страждання. Але вони довірилися Богові, і Господь через Свою благодать привів їх до святості.

Сьогодні святі ніби промовляють до кожного з нас: не бійтеся йти за Христом. Не бійтеся залишатися вірними Богові навіть тоді, коли це важко. Не бійтеся молитися, прощати, любити та творити добро. Шлях до святості відкритий для кожного християнина.

Тому в цей святий день подякуймо Господу за те, що Він благословив нашу землю такою великою кількістю свідків віри. Подякуймо Йому за тих, хто зберіг для нас святе Православ'я, передав його нашим батькам, а через них — і нам.
І звернімося до них із любов'ю, вдячністю та надією:

Усі святі землі Української, наші небесні батьки й матері, моліть Бога за нас, за наші родини, за нашу Церкву, за наш народ і за нашу Батьківщину. Просіть Господа за Україну в цей час страждань і тяжких випробувань. Вимолюйте в Нього силу для тих, хто боронить її свободу, захист для невинних, розраду для скорботних і зцілення для поранених. Просіть Господа визволити наш народ від великої біди, яка прийшла на нашу землю. Нехай Господь покладе край насильству, несправедливості та руйнуванню. Нехай збереже Україну у вірі, правді та праведності й благословить її справедливим і тривалим миром, щоб наш народ знову міг жити у свободі, гідності та відданості Христові. І нехай Господь сподобить і нас разом з усіма святими колись прославляти Пресвяту Тройцю у Її Небесному Царстві.

The Living Witnesses of the Grace of the Holy Spirit

Sermon for the Sunday of All Saints

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today the Holy Orthodox Church celebrates a magnificent and deeply meaningful feast — the Sunday of All Saints. It is no coincidence that this celebration comes immediately after Pentecost. Only a few days ago, we commemorated the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the birth of Christ's Church. Today, the Church turns our eyes toward the countless multitude of saints who received that divine grace, preserved it within their hearts, and brought forth the fruits of holiness.

Today we honor all the saints from the beginning of time — from the righteous Adam and Eve, the prophets and patriarchs of the Old Testament, the holy Apostles, martyrs, hierarchs, monastics, and righteous men and women of every generation, even to our own day. They are living witnesses that the Gospel of Christ is true, that the way of salvation preached by the Church leads to eternal life, and that the grace of the Holy Spirit is a real and transforming power capable of renewing the human heart.

The world often tells us that holiness is beyond our reach, that it belonged only to ancient times or to extraordinary people. But today the Church gives us a different answer. She places before us thousands upon thousands of saints and says: this is what every Christian is called to become. Holiness is not the privilege of a chosen few; it is the true purpose and calling of every human life.

God created mankind in His own image and likeness and destined us for eternal communion with Him. Sin darkened that image but did not destroy it. For this reason, the Holy Spirit comes to heal, renew, and sanctify the human person, restoring the beauty that was lost through the Fall. The saints are the clearest proof that a person can overcome sin, conquer the passions, and become a temple of the living God.

Yet today's feast has another profound and comforting meaning. We celebrate not only those saints whose names are known to us and whose lives are recorded in the Church's calendar. We also celebrate all the saints who are known to God alone.

Among them may be humble souls whose names were never written in books and for whom no public services were composed. They may have been faithful mothers who spent their lives praying for their children, fathers who worked honestly and raised their families in the faith, grandparents who taught us our first prayers. They may even be the parishioners who once stood beside us in this holy cathedral, worshipped with us, received the Holy Mysteries of Christ, and who now stand before the heavenly throne of God.

For this reason, today's feast is a great celebration not only in heaven but also on earth. Today the whole Church of Christ is united. The Church Triumphant in heaven and the Church Militant on earth glorify God with one voice and one heart. Death cannot separate those who belong to Christ, for, as our Lord Himself teaches us, God is not the God of the dead, but of the living; for all live unto Him.

As we look to the saints, we should remember that they were people just like us. They experienced struggles, sorrows, temptations, and hardships. Yet they did not lose faith, they did not abandon God, but walked faithfully the path of repentance, prayer, love, and obedience to the commandments of Christ. Because of this, they attained the goal for which every one of us was created.

The world teaches us to seek wealth, honor, and earthly pleasures. The saints teach us by their lives that the greatest treasure is God Himself, the greatest joy is a pure conscience, and the greatest victory is the victory over sin.

Today each of us should ask: Where is my life leading me? Does my way of living draw me closer to God? Am I walking the path that will one day allow me to rejoice together with all the saints in the Kingdom of Heaven?

May this holy feast strengthen our hope. If countless men and women have completed this journey before us, then by the grace of God we also can walk this path. The Lord does not ask of us what is impossible. He asks only for a sincere heart, true repentance, steadfast faith, love for God and our neighbor, and the desire to remain with Him forever.

Therefore, with love and reverence, let us glorify all the saints who have pleased God throughout the ages, and let us humbly ask for their heavenly intercession:

All Saints who have pleased God throughout the ages, pray to God for us, that we also may become heirs of the Kingdom which the Lord has prepared for those who love Him.
Amen.

Усі святі — живі свідки благодаті Святого Духа

Возлюблені у Христі брати і сестри!
Сьогодні Свята Православна Церква звершує особливе і величне торжество — Неділю всіх святих. Не випадково це свято встановлене саме в першу неділю після П'ятидесятниці. Лише кілька днів тому ми святкували зішестя Святого Духа на святих апостолів і народження Христової Церкви. А сьогодні перед нашим духовним поглядом постають незліченні сонми святих, які прийняли цю Божественну благодать, зберегли її у своєму серці та принесли плід святості.

Сьогодні ми вшановуємо всіх святих від віку — від праведного Адама і Єви, від старозавітних пророків і патріархів, від апостолів, мучеників, святителів, преподобних і праведників — аж до наших днів. Усі вони є живими свідками того, що проповідь Христова є істинною, що Святе Євангеліє є дорогою до спасіння, а благодать Святого Духа є реальною силою, яка здатна змінити людину.

Світ часто говорить нам, що святість є чимось недосяжним, що вона належить лише давнім часам або особливим людям. Але Церква сьогодні відповідає зовсім інакше. Вона показує нам тисячі й тисячі святих і говорить: ось ким покликана стати кожна людина. Святість — це не виняток із правила, а справжнє призначення людського життя.

Господь створив людину за Своїм образом і подобою, покликав її до вічного життя та єднання з Ним. Гріх затьмарив цей образ, але не знищив його. Саме тому Святий Дух сходить на людину, очищає її, оновлює та допомагає їй повернути втрачену красу. Святі є найкращим доказом того, що людина може перемогти гріх, подолати свої пристрасті та стати храмом Божої благодаті.

Але сьогоднішнє свято має ще одну дуже глибоку й зворушливу особливість. Ми святкуємо не лише тих святих, чиї імена записані в церковному календарі та прославлені Церквою. Ми святкуємо всіх святих, які перебувають у Царстві Небесному і яких знає Сам Господь.
Можливо, серед них є прості люди, про яких ніколи не писали книг і не складали богослужінь. Можливо, це були смиренні матері, які все життя молилися за своїх дітей; батьки, які чесно працювали і виховували свої сім'ї у вірі; дідусі та бабусі, які навчили нас першої молитви. Можливо, це ті парафіяни, які багато років тому стояли в цьому святому соборі поруч із нами, молилися, приймали Святі Тайни Христові, а тепер уже перебувають перед Престолом Божим.

Тому сьогоднішнє свято є великим торжеством не тільки на небі, але й на землі. Сьогодні вся Церква Христова єдина. Небесна Церква, яка вже досягла спасіння, і земна Церква, яка ще веде свою духовну боротьбу, разом прославляють Господа. Ми не розділені смертю, бо, за словами Христа, Бог є Богом не мертвих, а живих. У Ньому всі живуть.

Дивлячись на святих, ми повинні пам'ятати, що вони були такими ж людьми, як і ми. Вони мали свої труднощі, скорботи, спокуси та випробування. Але вони не втратили віри, не залишили Бога, а терпеливо йшли шляхом покаяння, молитви, любові та виконання Божих заповідей. Саме тому вони досягли того, до чого покликаний кожен із нас.

Світ навчає людину шукати слави, багатства й земних задоволень. Святі ж своїм життям свідчать, що найбільшим багатством є Бог, найбільшою радістю — чиста совість, а найбільшою перемогою — перемога над власним гріхом.

Сьогодні кожен із нас повинен поставити собі запитання: куди веде мене моя дорога? Чи наближає мене моє життя до Бога? Чи живу я так, щоб колись разом із усіма святими стати учасником Небесного Царства?

Нехай же нинішнє свято укріпить у нас надію. Якщо тисячі й мільйони людей змогли пройти цей шлях, то й ми, за допомогою Божої благодаті, можемо його пройти. Адже Господь не вимагає від нас неможливого — Він лише чекає нашого щирого покаяння, віри, любові та бажання бути з Ним.

Тож сьогодні з любов'ю та благоговінням прославимо всіх святих, від віку Богові угодивших, і зі смиренням попросімо їхнього небесного заступництва:

Усі святі, що від віку Богові угодили, моліть Бога за нас, щоб і ми стали спадкоємцями того Царства, яке Господь приготував усім, хто любить Його.

Today, on the Day of the Holy Spirit, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated in our Cathedral, followed by the Kneeling Prayers, during which we offered special prayers for our Cathedral, its spiritual renewal, and its future.

This day holds special significance for our parish. We prayed that the grace of the Holy Spirit would never depart from our church, that He would strengthen all those who labor for its renewal, and help us restore and build upon the legacy entrusted to us by previous generations.

Today, the Lord also gave us a special sign. A flower growing beside God's holy temple opened its beautiful blossoms on this very day. To many, this may seem like a simple coincidence, but for us it became a gentle and joyful reminder that the Lord has not abandoned us, and that the grace of the Holy Spirit remains among us, bringing life, renewal, and beauty to all that surrounds us.

May the grace of the Holy Spirit abide with all our parishioners, benefactors, and friends. May God bless all those brothers and sisters who lovingly and sacrificially dedicate their time, talents, and efforts to the revival of our holy Cathedral.

Happy Day of the Holy Spirit! May His life-giving grace always remain with us.

Сьогодні, у День Святого Духа, в нашому соборі була звершена Божественна Літургія та прочитані колінопреклонні молитви, в яких ми особливо молилися за наш собор, його духовне відродження та майбутнє.

Для нашої парафії цей день має особливе значення. Ми просили Господа, щоб благодать Святого Духа ніколи не покидала наш храм, щоб Він укріпив усіх, хто трудиться задля його відродження, і допоміг нам відновити та примножити те, що було створене працею попередніх поколінь.

Сьогодні Господь подарував нам ще один особливий знак. Квітка, що росте біля Божого храму, саме цього дня розквітла своїми прекрасними пелюстками. Для багатьох це може здатися простим збігом, але для нас це стало тихим і радісним нагадуванням про те, що Господь не залишає нас, а благодать Святого Духа перебуває серед нас, оживляючи та наповнюючи життям усе навколо.

Нехай благодать Святого Духа перебуває з усіма нашими парафіянами, добродіями та друзями собору. Нехай Господь благословить усіх тих братів і сестер, які з любов’ю, жертовністю та відданістю віддають свій час, сили та працю для відродження нашої святині.

Зі святом Святого Духа! Нехай Його животворна благодать завжди перебуває з нами.
