The EVANGELIST - Book 1 - Chapter 1
What Is An Evangelist?
I think the best place to start with this subject is the Bible, so I'll turn to: Ephesians 4:11-12 NLT
11 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.
Self-explanatory. Not a lot to explain what an Evangelist is or does from this passage so we go to another:
Acts 21:7-8 NLT
7 The next stop after leaving Tyre was Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and sisters and stayed for one day. 8 The next day we went on to Caesarea and stayed at the home of Philip the Evangelist, one of the seven men who had been chosen to distribute food.
Timothy 4:4-6 KJV
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an Evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
So there you have it. Only three bible passages that refer to this important gift and person.
Now we must shorten the word to see what the Evangel is:
What does Evangel mean in Greek?
Simply - Good News
Middle English - evangile, from Anglo-French - evangeile, from Late Latin - evangelium, from Greek euangelion - good news, gospel, from euangelos - bringing good news, from eu- + angelos - messenger.
So there you have it:
The Evangel - is GOOD NEWS
The Presenter - is a Messenger, an Evangelist
1. In one sense that makes, Every Christian an Evangelist. Someone who acts as a Messenger, bringing Good News.
To most of the present day Church that concept has been lost. The common thought is that the Minister is the one who weekly gets up in a building and presents the Gospel. I believe that is a warped concept of what Jesus had in mind.
Wouldn't it be great if we could get back to the original plan of letting and encouraging everyone to speak of the greatest message ever given?
2. In the second sense, and the one we are talking about in these booklets; God has gifted some people (ministers) to be especially capable in speaking, and delivering the message.
These are people, men and women, young and old, rich and poor, educated and uneducated that receive from God a Gift - a special gift - that of speaking, and preaching the Gospel in the clearest, most powerful terms imaginable.
This last Group of People then, is the Primary Focus of this Series of Books.
