Catholic Conscience

Catholic Conscience Our vision is that every Catholic becomes fully engaged in their community. And we walk with those we send forth, so that no one is lost.

Our mission is civic evangelization through Catholic social teaching: forming citizens in the full breadth of our faith's vision, and thereby forming our Catholic community into a diverse, influential, and gently persuasive family of voices in society. We believe that we provide a unique approach to the teaching of Catholic social doctrine: our mission is civic evangelization through Catholic soci

al teaching, forming Catholic citizens rooted in the truth and beauty of our faith’s social vision, so the Catholic community can become a diverse, gently persuavive voice in democtratic society and politics. Much of our work is focused on politics and public service, in which we take no sides. We simply promote reflection on the Christian values of truth, freedom, justice, and charitable love, the principles of Catholic social teaching, and the virtues of humility, wisdom, and good stewardship; and send our members out to participate in public life—in whatever way best matches their abilities and vocations.

• We engage Catholics by meeting them on their own ground, talking to them directly, and demonstrating through action and example how Catholics should behave as active citizens.

• We inspire Catholics, and all others of good will, by sharing the full richness of Catholic Social teaching and Catholic civic obligation, supporting the growth of both the individual and social moral imagination, for appropriate and engaged citizenship.

• We prepare citizens for participation by educating, training, and supporting them as our sisters and brothers, building the confidence Catholics crave to go forth and engage civic society fully committed to the common good.

• We send inspired and prepared citizens forth to vote, to participate in the public conversation, to run for office, and to volunteer in civic life. To learn more about our work, visit www.catholicconscience.org.

Of Common Concern: Just War Revisited. The eruption of new conflicts in the Caribbean and in Western Asia suggests that debate over Just War doctrine will remain active for the foreseeable future. Current debate suggests several points to ponder.

As explained in our previous Just War posting, classic Catholic doctrine imposes strict conditions on the use of military force, even in defense. Among other criteria, in the Catholic view all other options must be exhausted before resort to violence can even conceivably be justified. (Catechism 2302-2308).
