II SATYANAAM IIUN-SEEN IN-SIGHTS

“Kaagad likhe so kaagadi, ko vyavahaari jeev Aatam drishti kahaan likhe, jit dekho tit peev”.Whatever is written on paper has the value of a document, it cannot be translated into an individual’s personal experience. The inner feelings of an individual cannot be written anywhere; wherever I see, I can only see my Beloved (God).Scriptures, books, manuscripts are all good sources of information which can be turned into knowledge. But if the information is not used properly, it will have no value. Information can become knowledge, knowledge can become wisdom, and wisdom can become experience. The ultimate goal is the experience that one can derive from whatever knowledge he receives. Satguru Kabir Saheb preaches the Guru-disciple connection as the most important relationship in the transformation of knowledge into experience. There is an awakening that needs to happen which can only happen with the grace of the Guru. One can see what is written on paper, can read what is on the paper, can understand what is on the paper…. But that is not sufficient to perceive the imperceptible, to absorb the indiscernible, to fathom the inconceivable. Realisation of the Self cannot be grasped from books. In this saakhi, Satguru Kabir Saheb is highlighting the importance of ‘seeing’ with spiritual eyes. Such in-sight calls for intuition. Neither can this in-sight be obtained from books nor is the experience transferable. However, the outcome of the experience is such that it allows the awakened soul to see outside what he could perceive inside. Seeing God in everything, in anything, everywhere, anywhere, all the time.Mahant Jay

METAPHYSICAL EMINENCE

“Mein marjivaa samoudra kaa, doobki maari ek Mutthi laayaa giaan ki, jaamen vastu anek”.

I dived into the universal consciousness as a living dead and filled my hands with spiritual wisdom, which shines with countless pearls.

As long as we consider the physical body and its organs to be the instrument of God-realisation, we will not be able to experience Him. The physical body is merely a vehicle; it is the driver who is the one who can communicate with the Master. The vehicle is limited to function at the physical level. This is why Satguru Kabir Saheb exhorts the concept of “mritak” or “marjivaa” which refers to living as if we are not alive. In other words, living at the consciousness level. When one does not seek the support of his physical or mental abilities to experience the divine presence, he is in fact acknowledging his metaphysical intelligence to communicate with God. The experience of the Divine fills the individual with spiritual wisdom, which stays with him even after the experience. Satguru Kabir Saheb is referring to the multiple characteristics of the insight thus earned during that experience. Then the application of our discriminative power in our everyday life allows us to pursue our path, and remain immune to the adversities that life presents us with. One who goes through such experiences is not affected by what the world throws at him in terms of sufferings, losses, pain, hardships and so on.

UNTIE THE NOOSE

“Jo tou puraa hai phand mein, niksegaa kab andh
Maayaa mad tokoun charhaa, mat bhule mati mand”

If you have voluntarily succumbed yourself to bo***ge, how will you release yourself from it? You have given in to temptations, wake up from your delusion!

The bird is happy in its cage, but happier in the trees, and happiest in the sky. When it realises that the cage is not where it should be, it will try to fly away from it. But if it is content with the cage, happy that it is being served its food, it would not contemplate any better space. Likewise if Man is deriving happiness by feeding his body, not knowing that feeding the soul will bring him an incomparable bliss, then he will continue to be a slave to his physical being. In this saakhi, Satguru Kabir Saheb is clearly pointing out that when someone has buried himself deep down into the world’s pleasures, he does not see anything else beyond the enjoyment he experiences. For him, this joy is the ultimate happiness that he can attain. Yet, he goes through sufferings again and again; but he craves for the momentary happiness he can derive in indulging in worldly pleasures. It is not easy to get disillusioned when one is entrapped in such fantasies. He does not use his discriminative abilities to distinguish between illusion and reality. Feeding the soul or the spirit is possible when we realise that the world and all of its elements are not real, the physical body is not real, the pleasures derived from using our sensory organs are not real. Then there is a calling to attend to the soul, our true being. The awakening happens when we have a Satguru in our life. Otherwise, we keep sinking in the quagmire until we drown ourselves to be reborn in that same foreign land.

KNOW HOW AND KNOW WHERE

“Chalan chalan sab koye kahe, mohi andeshaa aur
Saaheb son parichaye nahin, pahounchenge kiss thor”.

Everyone is just advising me to follow them; but I am not confident in following any of them. If they themselves do not know God, where will they lead me to?

How do we know if we are on the right track? Until and unless we have a Spiritual Master in our life, we are lost. There are many people who may want to guide you, claiming they know where to go. But if they themselves do not know the destination, how can we trust that they will lead us to the right abode? Satguru Kabir Saheb is saying here that we have to be wary of who we follow. It is not a bad thing to listen to all, but ultimately, we have to make our decision. A Spiritual Master knows the way, because of His experience. Self-realisation is an experience, not a place where one can be. The enlightened Master is the only one who can guide others to embark on that journey to realisation. Because there are many people who claim to know, and who offer to show others the way, Satguru Kabir Saheb warns us to be careful. There is also a misconception among many people who think that they can embark on different paths, thinking that they are increasing their chances to reach their goal. One cannot be in two or three boats at the same time. The process is clear : find the right Spiritual Master, surrender to Him, and do your practice. No one else can practice for you. The Master is the guide, but practice can only be done by the aspirant.

THE PRICELESS DIAMOND

“Heeraa kaa kacchu naa ghataa, ghataa ju becchanhaar
Janam gavaanyo aapno, andhe pasu ganvaar”.

The value of diamond remains the same when it is sold; it is the seller who undergoes a reduction in value. Those who exchange their diamonds for nothing waste the opportunity of their human life just like ignorant people.

For how much will you be ready to sell your soul? This question calls for a lot of reflections. Why would someone want to sell his soul? In the pursuit of our objectives in life, we may be tempted to realise great achievements. The desire to go for more, and more, and more often drags people in a vicious cycle where they forget their real purpose in life. We know of people like Hi**er who wanted to conquer the whole world. But at what cost? Like this, there are many people who are blinded by their desires to just go for more and more material wealth, name and fame, power, status and so on. It all has to do with how we interpret our real value. If we associate our value with the name and fame that the world gives us, or the wealth we are able to amass, or the position we are able to attain, then we are greatly mistaken. Our real value is not our networth; our real value is who we truly are, and it does not change with age, name, fame or material richness. Running after these material gains deviate us from our purpose in life and makes us lose the golden opportunity of being born human. The diamond being referred to in his saakhi of Satguru Kabir Saheb, is our true Self, and it is priceless. It is not inherited, not transferable, and not for sale. Those who ignore its value are also ignorant of how many lifetimes they strived to earn this human body. It is the gateway to God. Let us live with dignity in pursuit of our home and not exchange our precious diamond for anything in the world.

II SATYANAM II

MAKING SENSE OF OUR SENSES

“Sumiran surati lagaaye ke, mukh se kacchu na bol
Baahar ke pat band kar, andar ke pat khol”.

Just focus your consciousness in all quietude, and do not speak or recite anything. Then disconnect yourself with the outer world and connect with your inner Self.

In order to connect with God, we need to disconnect with the world. In many meditation practices people are taught to slowly shift their attention away from their surroundings, their body, their thoughts…..so that they can focus on the non-physical. The objective is to shut off from the unreal to the real. Shutting off all the senses. Even recitation or chanting of mantras would require one to concentrate on their elocution. Therefore, withdrawing from all types of activities leaves one in a state of stillness. This is when the focus can be redirected inwards. Envisioning the real Self which is not outside, which is not our mind, which is not our senses, which is not our physical body happens when we switch from all that is apparently real to the imperceptibly real. In this saakhi, Satguru Kabir Saheb is stating that unless we stop using our physical eyes to search for God, we will never realise Him. Meditation is a practice which is experienced by the meditator, not transferable to another individual. At the same time, it should not be considered to be a destination, but rather a journey. A journey which confirms that the outer world is but illusory. Those who remain entangled in the activities of the world, considering them to be the real tasks of our existence will not find the real being that they are. The important lesson for us to learn from this teaching is where to use our senses and where not to use them.

II SATYANAAM II
ME TIME
As long as the mind keeps talking, we cannot be calm. In meditation, we are instructed to quiet the mind. Why? Because when we quiet the mind, we allow the soul to ‘talk’. In fact, our communication with God can only happen when we stop talking to the world.
Just run through your past week’s schedule. Most of us, if not all of us, would come up with a nonstop running after this and that (work, groceries, housework, baby-sitting, watching TV, and so on), and not have had time for ourselves. Because there was not enough ‘time’. If we only take one item out from that busy schedule, we will find out that we could have had ‘me time’. One of the most popular time-eaters is social media. Just cut that in half and find out how much time you can have for yourself. Unfortunately, many people think that the time they spend on social media is ‘me time’. Because they believe that they must show their presence on that platform, they have to show what they have done, and they have to know what everyone else has done. Are we really rewarded for endless social media scrolling? Having ‘me time’ comes with so many rewards…. Sharper focus, better concentration, finer creativity, improved productivity, more relaxation. The more we build a habit of practicing solitude, the less we will complain about ailments. It has been proven that most diseases are triggered by ourselves through stress. Stress does not just invite itself to our mind and body, we invite it. The excuse that there is never enough time is just lame. Not surprisingly, everyone complains of lack of time. From the child to the student to the teacher to the CEO to the retired person. It is not time which is running out, it the mind which cannot stop. The mind cannot stop thinking and talking and chit-chatting and gossiping and grumbling…. If we are able to stop the mind from running as fast as it wants to, just five minutes of silence will be more effective than five hours of hustling. It is understandable that we all have to do our work, assume our responsibilities…. But at the same time, we do need to stop and be with our own Self. Otherwise, we will just be running an endless race with no purpose.
Over time, people have developed so many habits that they cannot change any more. Because the willpower to break those habits is not there. If we start working on one habit at a time, we will see how much time we can save for ourselves. That time can only make us better spiritual beings.

SEE-IN, HEAR-IN

“Aankhi na dekhe baavraa, shabad sune nahin kaan
Sir ke kes ujjal bhaye, abahoun nipat ajaan”

You are not applying your vision and your sense of hearing effectively, where you should be applying them. With time, your hair will turn grey and you will still remain ignorant.

Outward perceptions can be very misleading. Spiritual awakening leads us to open ourselves to inner perceptions. As long as we remain at the level of living the physical existence, satisfying the senses, eating, drinking, sleeping, we would just be living as any other animal and not connect to our higher Self. How we use our eyes to envision our real being, how we use our ears to tune in to the celestial sound…. If instead of making an effort to realise our true Self we use our senses to go after desires, we will be missing the opportunity of being born human. In this saakhi, Satguru Kabir Saheb is urging us to not let time go waste. By letting the eyes fall prey to the traps of Maya, by allowing the ears to give in to rumours, the actual power of vision and sound is being misused. As someone grows old, the senses of action and perception also weaken. The ability for one to be able to connect to the inner voice and vision becomes impaired with age. And at the same time, the accumulated unwanted sounds and sights create a barrier, hard to overcome to tune in to our source. But Satguru Kabir Saheb states that it is never too late : the moment one realises that the path is inward, not outward, he must pursue that course.

UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER

“Srotaa toh gharhi nahin, vaktaa bake saw baad
Srotaa vaktaa ek ghar, tab kathani kaa swaad”.

If the audience is not present, the speaker will waste his time giving his lecture. When the listener and the speaker are on the same wavelength, then the discourse will be effective.

Many times we find people giving lectures but the audience does not pay attention. Even at schools, many times students just ignore the lessons being delivered by the teacher. Fundamentally, efforts have to be made on both sides for the communication to be effective. The speaker has to be able to talk in a way for the audience to understand, and the audience also has to be attentive to the lecture. The gap between the speaker and the audience can be bridged by being in the present moment. Unconditional attention. In this saakhi, Satguru Kabir Saheb is highlighting the importance of being connected by way of consciousness. In many scriptures it is recommended that the disciple has to go to his Guru with an empty ‘bowl’ and let it be filled by the Guru. Inattention will not fill the ‘bowl’. To comprehend the essence of the Guru’s teachings, the disciple has to give his full attention. These days, a lot of importance is being given to “Mindfulness”. Satguru Kabir Saheb has always taught us to be mindful by recommending “surati nirati ek taar”, which means that we have to converge all our attention through our consciousness to one point. If we are physically present, but mentally absent or mentally switching focus, then we will not be successful in fulfilling our objective. By focussing our aim at one point both physically and mentally, we will reap the benefits of our endeavour.

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

“Aissa koyi na milaa , jaason rahiye laag
Sab jag jaltaa dekhiyaa, apni apni aag”

I searched the whole world but could not find anyone with whom I could be in peace. Everyone was just burning in their own passions.

Man is a social animal who by nature likes to be in the company of his peers as much as possible. Being physically together has always been favoured; but now technology has made virtual gatherings and exchanges also very common. What is it that Man looks for in those meetings? Comfort, moral support, good feeling, joy, wellbeing…. In short, people want to be in peace. However, there are more complaints, protests, conflicts, and many expressions of anger, hatred, jealousy, envy that we see being expressed, whether it is on the streets or on social media. In many instances, people also express their pride in who they are, what they have done and how they are. Few are those who express empathy, love and care in their interactions with others. And here, ‘others’ primarily means those people who are not in our circles. Satguru Kabir Saheb is exclaiming loud and clear that because of the intense emotions of disharmony, people are ‘burning’ in their own fires. The expression of their emotions is not conducive to creating the peace which we would like to find in our interactions with people. The cause of such ‘fires’ burning people is the ego. The ego is not source of love; the heart is. The ego is not source of harmony; the heart is. The ego does not tolerate unity; the intellect does. The way to achieve real harmony among all human beings is to apply our intellect and our heart in all that we do. Thus all the fires will be doused.

CLASSLESS

“Raajpaat dhan paaikar, kyun kartaa abhimaan
Parosi ki jo dashaa, bhayi so apni jaan”.

Why are you so proud of all the ephemeral wealth you have amassed? Know that your fate is no different than those who are penniless.

Many people are very crazy about their wealth and possessions, not knowing that none of these are theirs. This is the greatest misconception that people have; they attribute power to money, wealth, riches, capital. People fight for wealth, for possessions, and also for position. They do not realise that there are no differences between them and those people who are less rich or who are not in positions of power. There are also many situations where people lose their positions and capital. They are the same people, just that their positions have changed. This is why in this saakhi, Satguru Kabir Saheb is warning those people who are so proud of their status to come to terms with reality. Wealth or position does not change someone’s real identity or his purpose in life. Being richer does not make one’s path to realisation better or easier. This is also why Satguru Kabir Saheb was against the use of position to discriminate between people. The doctrine of caste and its practices to relegate people to classes where they cannot enter temples or other holy places is totally unacceptable. All such discriminations are unfair - whether they are on the basis of social class, birth, race, colour, language, community or country. Satguru Kabir Saheb professes only two types of human beings : the crow-type and the swan-type. And He clearly states that the crows can be converted into swans.

DIVINE FRIENDSHIP

“Ek dost hamhou kiyaa, jihi gal laal kabaaye
Sab jag dhobi dhoye mare, to bhi rang na jaaye”.

I befriended such a companion who stained a perfect bond of friendship with me. Even if all the washermen of the whole world try to wash it, they will not be able to remove that colour.

We make many friends in our life. Elementary school friends, High school friends, friends at work, in the community, on social media…. But who is our real best friend? Many of the friends we make as we grow, part ways at some point, and we do not meet them again. In this saakhi, Satguru Kabir Saheb is telling us that if we befriend that one being who is our real friend, we will always be in good company. Anytime, anywhere. The key is to find Him. It is unfortunate that people keep building friendships, putting all their trust in those relationships, then get disappointed. As much as it is good to have friends, to have support and to support others, we must also acknowledge our real friend who will never let us down. We should not ignore the divine presence, which is our guide, always supporting us. We all have that inner voice which grounds us back if we go off-track. The world is full of distractions which can come in the form of ‘fake’ friends, ‘traps’ luring us off tangent, ‘make-ups’ which hide the true nature of people, situations, events. All these are the washermen referred to in the saakhi. They will, in every possible way, try to break the real friendship we establish with the divine. Satguru Kabir Saheb is saying that no one can de-sanctify the bond you establish with God once you have realised Him.
