Saint John Seafarers’ Mission
Summer Mission Assistant

Summary:

To understand the Seafarers Mission activities, you need to understand seafarers. To understand seafarers, you need to know a bit about shipping. Shipping is crucial. About ninety percent of everything has been on a ship. This could not happen without seafarers. Seafarers are anyone who work on ships, often times in service-oriented, unnoticed, and undervalued jobs. Seafarers work on ships that take stuff around the world. They are crucial for our economy and our quality of life because they take (almost) everything from where it is to where it needs to be. The Saint John Seafarers’ Mission is here to serve these seafarers. They are disconnected from home, so we give them free WIFI to call their families. They are exhausted after a long day, or week, or even month at work, so we give them a place to rest. They are ashore after being on sea, so we give them help to get around Saint John to pick up the things they want and need.

Tasks:
Duties include, but may not be limited to:
- greeting seafarers and guests to the Mission
- helping to make seafarers visiting the Mission to feel at home and welcome
- serving refreshments to seafarers and keeping the kitchen clean
- light cleaning of building and surrounding area
- special projects or other duties assigned by Executive Director or designate
- work as part of a team that includes an executive director, chaplain, and volunteers
- work independently
- This position will include some evening and weekend shifts.

Skills:

Adaptability - The ability to achieve or adjust goals and behaviours when expected or unexpected change occurs, by planning, staying focused, persisting, and overcoming setbacks.

Collaboration - The ability to contribute and support others to achieve a common goal. For example, at work we use this skill to provide meaningful support to team members while completing a project.

Communication - The ability to receive, understand, consider, and share information and ideas through speaking, listening, and interacting with others.

Creativity and Innovation - The ability to imagine, develop, express, encourage, and apply ideas in ways that are novel, unexpected, or change existing methods and norms.

Problem-solving - The ability to identify, analyze, propose solutions, and make decisions. Problem solving helps you to address issues, measure success, and learn from the experience.

Reading and/or Writing - The ability to find, understand, use, or share information presented through written words, symbols, and images.

On Friday, June 5/26 I boarded CMA CGM KAILAS to visit the seafarers. Their time in port is short on this stop so no one could go outside (shore leave). Five nationalities were represented in the crew and officers…all welcoming and cordial. Three times this week I have been told how difficult the life of a seafarer is. I got to leave the ship and go home to my wife at the end of the day. Many of the seafarers are away from home for up to 11 months. A few hours of shore leave would be a welcomed thing. In spite of its challenges I found a group of cheerful Filipinos who wanted a photo with me.

Today, June 3/26 I visited the SFL Maui currently docked at Port Saint John. I had lunch with a few, chatted with as many as possible and asked several about them having time off the ship. Shore leave (going outside is the seafarer’s term) is a cherished and much needed right of the crew. Here is the Captain, 3rd mate and another seafarer descending the gangway for a trip to town or the shopping mall.

Looking forward to seeing you at these great events.

In visiting sefarers in their environment aboard ship I enjoy an array of experiences. Recently I met with the Master and several others as they were concerned for a crew member who had not returned from shore leave (no photo)…on another I met with the bosun and fitter for a lengthy conversation, learning that the fitter (blue shirt to my left) was headed home next morning after 11 months at sea. One ship on its maiden call to Saint John with a Turkish crew served me a most flavourful meal (obvious photo) and we enjoyed banter and laughter in the mess. On another visit I introduced the cook (with the chef’s hat), steward (head wrap) bosun (orange coveralls) and another seafarer (x on black) to Timbits. I find it intriguing how a small gift such as doughnut holes can warm the atmosphere and open a conversation. Oh, by-the-way, I had the honour of praying with the fitter, sharing in his excitement and nervousness as he prepared to fly home next day.
