Happy Birthday, Mary! Today, we join Christians around the world to commemorate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although little information about Mary’s early life is found in the Bible, Christians from the 2nd century looked to Christian tradition to better understand her parents and upbringing. One account, from the Protoevangelium of James (c. AD 150), portrays Sts. Anne and Joachim as an elderly couple without children who God blessed with a daughter. At the age of three, they dedicated the child to God in the temple, “And the high priest placed Mary on the third step of the altar, and the Lord God put grace upon the child, and she danced for joy with her feet, and the whole house of Israel loved her.”

Anglicans maintain that the account of her birth “bears witness to a deeper truth of faith — that Mary herself was the daughter of Israel’s hope and the child whose own offspring would fulfill the longing of the whole family of creation.” (For All the Saints, 272)

Eternal God,
who revealed the mystery of your loving providence
in the birth of Mary, the Mother of our Lord,
grant that we who now call her blessed
may be clothed with the light of your new creation
and rejoice with her
in the radiance of our Saviour Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

What does it mean to be an Anglican Christian?

Anglicans are followers of Jesus Christ who see to proclaim in word and deed the good news of God’s kingdom in and for the world.

Inspired by the witness of the scriptures and the early church, and informed by our God-given reason and human experience, we seek to shape our lives, as individuals and as a church, according to the example of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the world God loves.

Anglican Christians form part of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, organized into 38 self-governing national and regional churches that make up the Anglican Communion (http://www.anglicancommunion.org/). The Anglican Church of Canada (http://www.anglican.ca/) is a full and active member of this worldwide family of churches.

For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Today, we join the Church to commemorate St Monnica. A faithful Christian in the 4th century, St Monnica is known for the prayers and intercession she offered on behalf of her once wayward son who became the great St Augustine. To her joy, she saw the fulfillment of her prayers in AD 387 when St Augustine was baptized in Milan.

After falling ill, knowing his mother wanted to be buried in North Africa, St Augustine worried about the impending death as they prepared to sail the Mediterranean. Still a constant source of faith for her son she famously remarked, “Nothing is far from God; I need not fear that he will know where to raise me up at the end of the world.” Like St Monnica, let us have faith that God will similarly raise us at the end of time.

O God,
who heard the prayers
and gathered up the loving tears of Monnica
for the conversion of her child Augustine,
deepen our devotion, we pray,
and help us to work in accordance with your will,
that we may bring others,
even our own kindred,
to the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ;
who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Aujourd'hui, on se joint à l'Église pour commémorer sainte Monique. Chrétienne fidèle du IVe siècle, sainte Monique est reconnue pour ses prières et son intercession en faveur de son fils, autrefois turbulent, qui devint le grand saint Augustin. À sa grande joie, ses prières ont été exaucées en 387, lorsque saint Augustin a été baptisé à Milan.

Après être tombé malade, sachant que sa mère souhaitait être enterrée en Afrique du Nord, saint Augustin s'inquiéta de la mort imminente alors qu'ils s'apprêtaient à traverser la Méditerranée. Toujours source de foi inébranlable pour son fils, elle prononça ces paroles célèbres : « Rien n'est loin de Dieu ; je n'ai pas à m'inquiéter qu'il sache où me relever à la fin des temps.À l'exemple de sainte Monique, ayons foi que Dieu nous relèvera de la même manière à la fin des temps.

Throughout the 19th century, English immigrants settled in Sillery, bringing their Anglican faith to the region. In the early years, there was no permanent church building. This changed when Maria Orkney Morrin donated land for a church. Morrin was the wife of a prominent doctor who emigrated from Scotland and eventually became the first democratically elected mayor of Quebec City, Joseph Morrin.

The building represents the work of the Ecclesiological Society, which sought to revive Gothic architecture. Local craftsmen contributed to the Sillery sandstone structure which was completed on December 24, 1854. That year, the Christmas services was celebrated by Bishop George Jehoshaphat Mountain, the third Bishop of Quebec. Soon after, a presbytery and school were formed, the school named in honor of Goerge Mountain for his promotion of education.

St Michael’s continues to offer bilingual services every Sunday at 10am, as well as study and Christian formation groups led by the Rev. Canon Jeffrey Metcalfe.

Tout au long du XIXe siècle, des immigrants anglais se sont installés à Sillery, y apportant la foi anglicane. Au début, il n'y avait pas d'église permanente. La situation a changé lorsque Maria Orkney Morrin a fait don d'un terrain pour la construction d'une église. Elle était l'épouse d'un médecin renommé, Joseph Morrin, qui avait émigré d'Écosse et devint par la suite le premier maire démocratiquement élu de Québec.

L'édifice témoigne du travail de la Société ecclésiologique, qui cherchait à faire revivre l'architecture gothique. Des artisans locaux ont contribué à la construction de cette structure en grès de Sillery, achevée le 24 décembre 1854. Cette année-là, les offices de Noël ont été célébrés par l'évêque George Jehoshaphat Mountain, troisième évêque de Québec. Peu après, un presbytère et une école ont été fondés, cette dernière étant nommée en l'honneur de George Mountain pour son engagement envers l'éducation.

L'église Saint-Michel continue d'offrir des offices bilingues tous les dimanches à 10 h et des groupes de discussion et formation animés par le révérend chanoine Jeffrey Metcalfe.
