This shabbat marks Agunah awareness shabbat, in anticipation of International Agunah Awareness day on Taanit Esther. Esther was stuck in a marriage she did not choose. Get abuse traps people in marriages they no longer want to be a part of. This week, we dedicate shabbat to agunot and commit ourselves to supporting agunot and to prevention and awareness of get abuse.

With the clock change it’s easy to lose track of the time. Halakhic night time begins at sunset, so any hefseks and bedikot should be done before then. This week in Montreal, sunset is about 4:30pm.

*Pro tip: as soon as you know you’ll be doing a hefsek or bedikah, set an alarm in your phone so you don’t miss the window!
