Voice of the Martyrs Canada Actively Remembering and Serving the Church Persecuted. Mission: Actively Remembering and Serving the Church Persecuted. Purposes:

1.

"Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body" (Hebrews 13:3). To encourage and empower persecuted Christians to fulfill the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20).

2. To provide practical relief and spiritual support to the families of Christian martyrs (Matthew 25:36).

3. To equip persecuted Christians to love and win to Christ those opposed to the Gospel (Romans 12:14).

4. To help believers rebuild their lives and Christian witness in countries where they have formerly suffered oppression (Nehemiah 1:3; 2:5).

5. To promote the fellowship of all believers by informing the world of the faith and courage of persecuted Christians, thereby inspiring believers to a deeper level of commitment to Christ and involvement in His Great Commission (Hebrews 13:3; Galatians 6:2).

When Ashwin and Aboli arrived in Calgary in 2009, they expected to spend a few years studying before returning home to India.

They also arrived with the assumption that Canada was a Christian country.

It didn’t take long for that assumption to change.

As they watched Canada’s demographics shift, Ashwin and Aboli discovered something they hadn’t expected — a mission field.

“God’s bringing the various people groups to Canada and we have an amazing opportunity to fulfill the Great Commission, making disciples of the nations right where we are,” Ashwin explains.

What began as a temporary move to Canada was becoming something very different…

Pastor Vladimir Rytikov was born and raised in the Luhansk region of Ukraine. Ordained during 1995, he has faithfully served in ministry within this area for more than 30 years. Despite this, the pastor now faces deportation to an unknown location following Russia's occupation and subsequent annexation of the region. Apparently, Russian officials refuse to recognize Pastor Vladimir as a citizen due to his ministry involvement with an unregistered church.

Earlier this year, authorities ordered his deportation, prompting him to file an appeal. Officials contend that the church leader is a foreign citizen who "advocates for the violent change of the foundations of the constitutional order of the Russian Federation; or by other actions, creates a threat to the security of the Russian Federation or citizens of the Russian Federation."

On October 6th, the Russian-controlled Luhansk Supreme Court rejected Pastor Vladimir's appeal. Officials have also seized official documents pertaining to the ownership of his house and land, refusing to return them despite the ruling that his wife, Lyudmila, is permitted to remain within the region. In addition, the elderly couple, who are both caring for a son who has lived with a disability since 2015, were denied their government pensions. Compounding the family's multiple difficulties, Lyudmila is experiencing health complications.

Pastor Vladimir intends to continue appealing the case – even presenting it before Russia's Supreme Court if necessary. Meanwhile, his lawyer plans to request a suspension of any deportation order while the appeal process remains ongoing.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a Christian in a country where it’s dangerous to believe in Jesus?

While Western Christianity often sees persecution as something from the pages of early church history, for many believers around the world suffering for Christ continues to be their daily reality.

On Sunday, November 1st, we invite you to set aside time to learn about your persecuted brothers and sisters, reflect on their stories and pray for them.

If you’re busy on November 1st, we encourage you to dedicate another Sunday in November to pray for the persecuted church.

October’s issue of Table Talks, VOMC’s educational resource for children and youth, is focussed on Pastors.

Kids will learn about the important role that pastors play in discipleship and faith-building of believers in their care. An inspiring “Along the Way” story leads to engaging activities, including a Word Hunt where readers must decode a secret message about pastors. And creativity reigns with Colouring Connection and DIY Photo Coasters.

In India, where almost half of the country’s 28 states have anti-conversion laws, threats of arrest and imprisonment are daily realities for church leaders. According to VOM’s ministry workers, arrests can result from complaints made by opposing community members – even if there is no direct evidence.

In response, VOM Canada’s trusted ministry partners have launched a legal helpline to provide persecuted believers with immediate support when they experience opposition. This vital initiative is making a difference by:

• Offering direct legal representation and advocacy for Christians facing unjust charges.

• Raising awareness of religious freedom violations to foster a greater public understanding of the challenges encountered by minority faith groups.

• Launching legal action against anti-Christian legislation.

In January, Ms. Park Tae-Yeon was planning to return to her home country of South Korea after compassionately ministering to children for many years in eastern Russia as a missionary. However, one week before her scheduled departure, Ms. Park was detained by Russian authorities and charged with immigration-related offences.

On October 8th, the 70-year-old believer was sentenced to a total of five years and eight months in a general-regime correctional colony. (A Russian co-defendant, Zinaida Ustinova, received a six-year suspended sentence with five years' probation.) The court also ruled that the number of months Ms. Park had already spent at a detention centre for foreign nationals would not be credited towards her sentence. When delivering the court's verdict, an appointed judicial representative only cited the formal charges, not the reasoning behind the sentencing. Hopefully, the official written judgement, which was expected to arrive within days of the hearing, will provide a proper explanation.

The court's harsh sentencing has been described as "extraordinary" for an immigration violation. During an interview with Mission Network News, Dr. Eric Foley of VOM Korea stated, "If there was an immigration violation…normally the person would simply be kicked out of the country, especially if they had a plane ticket in their hand and were 70 years old." Considering that Ms. Park was questioned during the trial about her faith, as well as the ministry organization that she had been serving, Dr. Foley suspects that other factors may have contributed to the prosecution.

Although an appeal to a higher court has been planned, the detained believer will remain in custody pending the outcome. If the initial sentence is upheld, Ms. Park would likely be transferred to a women's correctional colony in Zaozernoye, a village near the city of Khabarovsk, where the missionary had been working with Child Evangelism Fellowship. Incidentally, this organization was added to the Russian government's list of "undesirable" organizations this past July.
