Mel Gibson has completed filming The Resurrection of the Christ, his long-awaited sequel to The Passion of the Christ, and the project will now be released in two parts.

Gibson says the film is “far more than a film” to him, calling it “a mission” he has carried for more than twenty years to tell “the most important story in human history.”

The sequel will explore not only Jesus’ resurrection, but also the mysterious three days between the crucifixion and resurrection, including what Christian tradition calls “The Harrowing of Hell.” Gibson said the story must go into “another realm,” including “Hell” and “Sheol.”

Jim Caviezel will not return as Jesus. Instead, Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen will portray Christ. Lionsgate has released the first official image of him in the role.

Part One is now scheduled for May 6, 2027, with Part Two following on May 25, 2028.

Chinese authorities arrested six Christians in Guizhou Province after accusing them of organizing activities for minors through Sunday school classes, family worship gatherings, and Christian teaching.

According to reports, the believers were charged with “organizing minors to disrupt public order,” a charge critics say is being applied to peaceful religious activities rather than acts involving violence or public unrest.

Religious freedom advocates warn the arrests are part of a broader crackdown on Christianity in China, where officials have increasingly restricted children’s participation in religious education and closely monitored unregistered churches.

The case has drawn international attention because the gatherings reportedly involved families worshipping together and teaching children about the Christian faith.

At the same time, reports indicate Chinese authorities continue to push the government’s “Sinicization” campaign, which seeks to align religious organizations more closely with Communist Party ideology and state-approved values.

Despite growing persecution, many Christians in China continue meeting, worshipping, and sharing the Gospel.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:10, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Please pray for believers in China, for protection over pastors and families, and for courage for those who continue following Christ despite persecution.
