Ethiopia has a proud Christian heritage as one of the first places where the Gospel message was preached outside of Europe.

Today, though, many among the Oromo and Amharic people groups still lack access to the Bible in their own language. We partner with local champions to work to change this by placing God's Word in their hands and helping them to understand it.

Please pray that God will continue to bless this work and transform individuals through His Holy Spirit!

“Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith.” 1 Thessalonians 3:7 NIV

One of the best things about being a follower of Jesus is getting to belong to the fellowship of the redeemed. I’m completely aware that none of us are perfect, and you will never find a perfect church. But over and over again, when one of God’s people is in need, others of God’s people come to their aid. It is part of belonging to each other as followers of Jesus.

Paul’s words in today’s verse remind us of something we often forget: faith is never meant to be lived in isolation. Even strong leaders, seasoned believers, and faithful servants of God need encouragement.

Paul was carrying heavy burdens—distress, opposition, uncertainty—yet his heart was lifted when he heard that the Thessalonian believers were standing firm. Their faith became his encouragement. Your faith matters more than you know. God uses it not only to sustain you but to strengthen others who are walking their own difficult paths.

When life feels uncertain and you don’t know what’s next, or when you are feeling overwhelmed by the "what ifs," remember these verses:

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” - Isaiah 26:3 NIV

"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." - 1 Peter 5:7 NIV

You don’t have to have everything figured out. God isn’t asking you to control the future, just to trust Him with it.

Take a deep breath. God can carry all your doubts and fears.

“But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you.” 1 Thessalonians 3:6 NIV

While there are dangers to social media, there are also great blessings. I’ve been in ministry for 45 years – I was ordained in June 1981. Over those decades, I’ve had the joy of pastoring many people – and through social media, I’m able to keep in touch with quite a few of them.

It is so encouraging that many are walking closely with the Lord and faithfully loving and serving Him. Paul expresses that same encouragement in today’s verse. What a gift that report must have been. In the middle of hardship, the Christians in Thessalonica had held fast. Their circumstances had not softened, but their faith had deepened. Their love had not cooled; it had matured.

Notice also the mutual encouragement. Paul longed to see them, and they longed to see him. The body of Christ was never meant to be lived out alone. We need one another’s prayers, words, and presence.

Across Eastern Europe, unrest and uncertainty are opening doors for the Gospel.

In regions where cultural tradition once defined faith, many people are now searching for something deeper, true comfort, truth, and lasting hope. And many are responding to the message of Jesus.

But there is an urgent challenge.

Thousands of new believers do not have a Bible of their own. War-related displacement, financial hardship, and limited access to printed Bibles leave many without the primary resource they need to grow, stand firm, and share their faith.

Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32 NIV)

New believers cannot grow strong in that truth without God’s Word in their hands.

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”
2 Corinthians 4:7 (NIV)

As a child, she took a new name when she was baptized: Helen, which means shining light, the bright one. Her father knew Helen was special. To provide a better life for her, he sold a camel so she could leave their remote village and go to school.

Now Helen has finished her schooling and returned home. She is the only one in her village with more than a basic education. Animals are very important in the village: transportation, food, and currency. Caring for animals is vital work. The women drive them to water and to pasture, and keep them safe.

Helen, as an educated person, receives respect from everyone in the village. Her value lies in knowledge, not just in her ability to care for animals and children. She now has the power to decide if, and whom, she will marry. She has value, identity. And for Helen, most important is her identity in Christ.

She wants to teach the people in her village: the women, the children. “When you tell a woman something, her man will hear it too. Same for children: if they are excited about what they are learning, they tell their parents.”

At the end of the day, after caring for the animals, the women gather in the center of the village. Helen wants to be their teacher, using the Word of God as their text. She is so grateful for the Bible she has just received from our local champion, “No one sees us. There are no roads leading to our village. But God found us, even though we have no roads. God sees us.”

Helen is excited to be part of Bible-based adult literacy coming to her village. The Bible she has received is just the beginning. The local champion will return soon and bring training materials with him. Her face is shining.

“For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter had tempted you and that our labors might have been in vain.” 1 Thessalonians 3:5 NIV

Driving through a lovely Welsh valley, we came upon a flock of sheep and a shepherd with his corgi, caring for the sheep, rounding them up to get them to the best pasture. Even from a distance, we could tell that shepherd genuinely cared for his flock.

There is a reason we use these same terms for a loving, caring pastor who takes the call of God to care for the people of the church – we even refer to them as “the flock,” seriously. It is obvious that the apostle Paul sets for us a great example of his concern for those God had put in his care.

If God has called you to give spiritual care for someone or a group of believers, shepherd them with love and compassion, protecting them and guiding them as they stay close to the Great Shepherd, Jesus.
