Sermon Text: Matthew 22:34-46 | Leviticus 19:1-2, 15-18

"WHO DO YOU LOVE MOST?"

(Sermon Excerpt)
In Jesus, God has opened a fountain of His love, so that whoever believes in Jesus will share in the rich outpouring of His grace.

Yet there are times when sinful desires take hold of us. The devil tries to sneak behind and tempt us. Those are really difficult times, and we tend to forget what God has done for all in His love.

Yet when we fall into such sin, our comfort is Jesus Himself who has already gone to the cross for all sinners. He has carried our guilt and shame and shed His holy blood for us. Jesus forgives us all our sins, even for those moments when we have failed to love God above all things and failed to love our neighbours as ourselves.

And Jesus tells us that, in such moments of weakness, we must turn to Him in prayer. Jesus Himself taught His disciples about such moments when He said:

“Watch and pray, so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41) And, "..lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." (Matthew 6:13)

When we pray to God our Father in the name of His only Son †, He sends His Holy Spirit to watch over us. He covers us with His pinions, and under His wings we find refuge. (Psalm 91:4)

And this is why when anyone asks us: “Who do you love most?”
The Holy Spirit teaches us to answer: “We love and trust in our God above all things, because He first loved us and has saved us from the snare of the devil and the sin of the world.”

“The Life of a Christian is a Life of Prayer.” 🙏
Saturday, September 26, 2026 | Pentecost 18 | Matthew 21:23-32 | Psalm 25:1-10
In Psalm 25, the Psalmist cries out: “Make me to know Your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation.”
By praying this, he confesses, left to ourselves, we cannot know God’s ways by our own wisdom, nor walk in them by our own strength. As fallen children of Adam, we are both incapable and unwilling to follow God's truth.
This is precisely the prayer that the chief priests and elders in today’s Gospel refused to pray.
When they demanded of Jesus, “By what authority are You doing these things?” (Matthew 21:23), they proved that knowledge alone does not create faith.
They knew the Scriptures, yet refused to believe what they testified about Christ. Instead of rejoicing that God’s house was being restored as a house of prayer, they sought to judge Jesus rather than learn from Him.
The chief priests believed they no longer needed teaching; the Psalmist knew he desperately did!
But before we eagerly condemn the chief priests and the elders, we must examine our own hearts and recognize ourselves in them.
By nature, we also resist being taught by God. We prefer to judge God’s Word — or judge others by it — rather than allowing it to judge us. We cling to our own wisdom, and our prayers are too often preoccupied with what we want rather than what we truly need.
But thanks be to God that our risen Lord, Jesus Christ continues to receive repentant sinners! He speaks His absolution, nourishes His Church with His Word and Sacraments, and teaches us through His Holy Spirit.
Therefore, "Let us pray that the Holy Spirit continues to lead us daily into repentance and true faith." ✝️

Week 1 | Study Recap

So, where was Philippi?
Philippi was a major city in ancient Macedonia, now located in modern-day Greece in Europe, it suffered many invasions and was later abandoned in the 14th century after the Byzantine and Ottoman wars. It was a Roman colony when St. Paul visited around AD 50.

How did St. Paul reach Philippi in Macedonia?
St. Paul was on his second missionary journey, traveling through Asia (now known as Turkey) with Timothy and Silas when they came to Troas. Paul had a vision in the night: “a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us’” (Acts 16:9).

Who did St. Paul meet in Philippi and where?
St. Paul used to visit synagogues on the Sabbath day to pray wherever he traveled. He went out in Philippi to pray but came near riverside and sat down to speak with a few women who had come there. The book of Acts records: “One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.” (Acts 16:14) Lydia got baptized along with her household.

The Lutheran Connection:
The Lutheran Confessions (AC V), “The Ministry.” The text affirms that to obtain faith, God instituted the ministry of teaching the Gospel and administering the Sacraments, because "through the Word and Sacraments, as through instruments, the Holy Ghost is given, who works faith" where and when it pleases God in those who hear the Gospel.

A small but hopeful moment for our community

Immanuel Georgetown hosted its first Community Seminar on Hope & Love through Substance Use on September 12, 2026, and are deeply grateful for the turnout and the warm, thoughtful spirit shared throughout the day.

In a clear expression of Luther’s Two Kingdoms doctrine at work, our community heard both the hope of Christ’s Gospel and the love shown through faithful public service:

- Rev. Robert Krestick, pastor emeritus, Lutheran Church Canada shared how God’s Word forms us in Christ’s love to serve all people.
- Mr. Robin Griller of St. Michael’s Homes, Toronto, offered clinical and recovery insights that uphold the dignity of life.

We were also honoured by the presence of our MP Kristina Tesser Derksen, Honourable Member of Parliament for Milton East–Halton Hills South, who offered a few words of encouragement at the beginning of the seminar and presented Immanuel Lutheran Church with a Certificate of Recognition for this community service initiative.

We were grateful for the presence of our Mayor Ann Lawlor as well, the Mayor of Halton Hills. Mayor Lawlor shared a few words of encouragement as we began the seminar.

Sermon: "Take Courage! Jesus is here" — Matthew 14:22-33

Scripture is clear: faith comes from hearing — hearing the Word of Christ in its truth and purity. When our ears become attuned to whatever entertains us rather than to the voice of our Lord, faith inevitably weakens. Peter shows this to us in the storm.

Had the Lord not preserved His Church, the early Christians would have been swept away by the pagan world around them. The early Christians lived in a world filled with many voices and many gods. Greek literature shaped the imagination of the ancient world, and Homer's Odyssey — now returning to public attention through a new film — was one of its strongest currents.

Homer's imagined gods often took amusement in human suffering, but the One true God sent His only Son, who became flesh and blood as the second person of the Holy Trinity, not to toy with human pain, but to bear our sins and sorrows and to die for the salvation of all.
