Today marks my last day with Dayspring and my last service as a parish priest. As we read the Gospel about choosing to focus on Divine things rather than human things, we are discussing the Christian life in terms of football and a pregnancy. If that seems odd, have a watch and see what you think! It does come together!

I believe that every single person has a vocation which is unique to them. The question really is then "how do we see that vocation in our lives."
You don't have to be paid to have a vocation. You just have to find that passion (and compassion) that makes your heart sing as God always intended!

I believe that every single person has a vocation which is unique to them. The question really is then "how do we see that vocation in our lives." You ...

The story of Martha and Mary is a difficult one to grapple with. John Shelby Spong suggests that it is really about breaking out of role expectations. He may just be right!
It seems to me that Jesus spent very little time telling people that they "must" do anything. Rather it seems that he spent a lot of his time inviting people to a new thing. He seemed to be whispering, "if you wish, you may."
Was Jesus really giving people permission to break free of the roles and expectations society had placed/does place on them?

John Shelby Spong makes the case for the possibility that the Christian Church - as we know it - is dying. He also makes the case that its death will indeed make room for its resurrection as the Church God would have recognized today.
This is not bad news. It is actually great news. What do you think?

Have you ever tried to help a colour-blind person understand the shade of colour that is specific to something? It's tough to find the words to share something important with someone who doesn't understand the words you are using and who can't contemplate your context.
Sometimes I think that must be how it is with God. We cannot comprehend God's language ... and so we create words and ideas to get as close as we can to God's reality. However, we never really do get close, do we?
I think that's how it is with how we understand miracles too.

Too often we focus on the "facts" of Jesus' life, while forgetting the "truth" of his life. John Shelby Spong said the following: "Birth stories are always fanciful. They are never historical. No one waits outside a maternity ward for a great person to be born. An individual has first to become great; then tales presaging that future greatness begin to circulate around his or her origins."
Food for thought ... What do you think?

This first Sunday of Lent always shares with us a version of Jesus' 40 days in the desert being tempted by Satan. In Mark's Gospel we are told that Jesus was sent by the Holy Spirit into the desert intentionally! What is that all about? Maybe it can help us understand the role of temptation in our own lives.

Light is a beautiful gift. Whether it's the full force of stadium lights, a candle flickering in the dark, or a nightlight in a child's bedroom, light dispels the darkness and the darkness NEVER overwhelms it!
Where do you see light in your world today? How might others recognize you as the light in their lives?

There comes a time in everyone's life when they realize that they can no longer be contained behind the walls that surround them. Whether it's curiosity or necessity, we realize we need to jump the wall and take on a new adventure. Walking by faith and not by sight is a tall order but it's one we can all do, with God's help!

Bishop John Spong was a controversial Anglican (Episcopalian) Bishop who challenged people to look at Christianity through the eyes that they have rather than simply accepting what they had been told. Whether you agree with his work or not really wasn't his point. He was suggesting that people look anew at that which is not just old but eternal.
What happens if we look at Jesus with fresh eyes?

Ash Wednesday is a day upon which we begin a journey toward wholeness. It is a day that is solemn but not in a depressing way. Rather solemn in a way that helps us become aware that something holy is happening to us. Our hearts are being renewed and the next 6 weeks will bring us the gentleness and time for preparedness we need to keep our new hearts safe and gentled.

Last week I spent several days with the Sisters of St. John the Divine at their Convent in Toronto. It was exactly what the Holy Spirit ordered! From the daily rhythm of lots of worship, to silent meals, and chatting during "spiritual direction," I was reminded that be are all experts on our own lives and that we are all really, really good at living our own lives - even when we think we're flailing!
