IVAN JOHN STASIEWICH OBITUARY

While at home in Burlington with his loving family, fell asleep in the arms of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Friday, September 23, 2016, after courageously fighting cancer the past six months. Ivan was born to Jerome and Jacqueline Stasiewich in rural Kosów, Wolyn Province, Poland on October 7th, 1925. He married Elizabeth Alice Dutkewich on September 5th,

1948, whose undying love will remain throughout eternity. Raised in the Church of God of Prophecy, Ivan was a dedicated steward and helped establish the early church presence in Western Canada. He retired from the Ford Motor Company, Oakville, Ontario, in 1991 after 38 years of service. Ivan had a very quiet nature but was greatly appreciated for his loving heart and generosity to family and friends. We all share happy memories and look forward to a reunion in heaven for all eternity when we shall see his beaming smile and hear his gentle voice again. Predeceased by his father and mother, Ivan will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his children, Barry Stasiewicz of Hamilton, ON; Brenda (Steve Kecskes) of Milton, ON; Bonnie Stasevich of Burlington, ON; and Benny Chan of Coronado, CA. Greatly missed by grandchildren David Stasewich of Acton, ON, and Christine Clark of Milton, ON, and Matthew Kecskes; and great grandchildren Charlie and Lucy Clark. Visitation and Service at Smith’s Funeral Home, 1167 Guelph Line, Burlington, September 27 and 28, 2016 respectively. Officiating Pastors, Bishops Levi Clarke from Delaware, USA, and S.A. Morrison of Toronto, ON will offer tribute and words of hope from the Scriptures. Ivan will be resting in Faith Garden at Burlington Memorial Gardens, Burlington, ON. If desired, expressions of sympathy made to 100 Huntley Street, Burlington, ON will be sincerely appreciated.

CANADIAN NATIONAL STEAMSHIPS

Ivan served on both of CNSS original Grand Trunk Pacific vessels, the Prince Rupert (shown) and sister Prince George. The CNSS Prince George, built in 1948, replaced the first that was destroyed by fire in 1945. Dad took the new George out of Nanaimo Docks with his Captain on it's first run. She operated until the end of season in 1974 after which a fire damaged the ship. Dad left the service in 1950 as Chief Petty Officer so that he could be with his wife in Manitoba.

The Prince ships, both 3,380 ton, 18 knot vessels could carry 1,500 passengers with staterooms for 220 and operated a weekly service Vancouver to Prince Rupert along the Inside Passage Route, while the new CNSS Prince George extended sailings to Skagway and Juneau, Alaska.

ROYAL POLISH CALVARY

According to my uncle, Nick Stasiewich, my Dad served in the calvary before his commanding captain had him transferred to the Navy because, "Ivan, you'll live longer on the water than on the ground." Nick said that when Ivan came to Canada, he brought his calvary sword with him but being that it was too long to fit in the suitcase, he broke it in half to fit. Before Nick passed away, he and I had many discussions about what had happened to the sword but IF it made it to Brantford in 1952-53, it was discarded before or shortly after his move to James Avenue. I never saw it in my life, unfortunately.

Picture of the 1934-1939 designed calvary sword is an example of what my Dad's would have looked like.

POLISH CALVARY

The Polish Calvary facing off on 28 August, 1939 with 1 million troops against the N**i imminent invasion of 1.5 million N**i troops plus 50,000 from the Slavic Republic, managed to hold off for a least a little while. My commanding office, who had taken a liking to me, saved my life by sending me to the Navy, saying, "If you stay here, Ivan, you will die. At least in the Navy you have a chance."
